Re: Going to look at churches Sunday

sorry if this doesnt sound right, and I don't mena to offend, but a church is not like a catering hall. It should be one you feel comfortable in and if you haven't been involved in the church, maybe you might want to go to a couple of masses to get a feel for the liturgy and congregation.

Oh you reminded me..........I have to do the same thing!! I never officially joined my church when my DH and I moved out to Stony Brook. We have to just go join the parish that is right near our house.

I agree 100%. If you are Catholic, then you will attend the parish you live in. Its not like visiting colleges or anything.

I was looking in the Babylon area. I have it narrowed doen to St Josephs in Babylon, St Martins in Amityville and my favorite, St Killians in Farmingdale.

Re: Going to look at churches Sunday

I'm sorry - I don't know that area. Find the church that makes you feel "at home" -- there should be a spiritual connection that makes it feel "just right".

Good luck and enjoy yourself!

I am aware of what a church is. I do not regularly attend a church, so I am looking for one to become affiliated with. My local church is not the nicest or in the greatest location. My favorite is St Killians in Farmingdale, but it is @ 15 mins away, not right around the corner, but I am pretty sure that is the school I want to send him to when he gets older

If you got married in a Catholic church, then this isn't new. You will find when you "visit" churches, they will not just welcome you if you are affiliated with another parish (ie where you got married, unless you moved). Also, due to restrictive guidelines by the Dioceses, you can't just pick which church you like best to have your child affiliated with.

I didn't get married in a church (but I was married by a priest in a different state) and I am only in my neighborhood a few years. I guess I will go witht he church that does "welcome" my family then

Re: Going to look at churches Sunday

I had Hayley baptized in the church we got married in and they told me for the future, since I don't live in their "jurisdicition" if I want Hayley to attend religious instructions they take kids from their area first and if there is room then she can go there too.

So these churches you are looking at, if you don't live in their "juriscition" they may not baptize your baby.

that was my point exactly. The Dioceses has strick guidelines for these things for a reason.

Re: Going to look at churches Sunday

good luck finding a church you feel comfortable at .. I had my son, daughter and will have this baby baptized in the church my grandparents belong to its 20 min away but its a real nice church and they make you feel welcome.. I live in a not so great neighborhood either and wouldnt choose the church over here. If you feel comfortable in the church even though its 15 min away I say go for it.I was baptized, and confirmed in a church that was 30 min from my home as a kid but my family was married there and they didnt care that I lived far away they welcomed everyone..I dont think the church would turn you away there supose to welcome families and if they dont welcome you then there not the right kind of church..

no problem I was brought up that a church door is always open and I know there are churches out there that have become all about money and less about religion and family and those type of churches you wouldnt want anyhow..good luck again

well said.

Do you belong to your local parish? Some churches require you to be registered with them to have your christening there.

ITA, what's with some of the harsh comments here?

I'm in a situation where I live 30 minutes away from my old Parish. I would have liked to look for a new Parish, but I don't have a lot of time before DC arrives, so He will have to be baptized there.

I agree

when i was getting married we went to speak to the church in our neighborhood and they wanted to charge us $1500 for getting married, i thought that was a little ridiculous.....I agree you should go to the church that welcomes your family..good luck

Re: Going to look at churches Sunday

I hate to say it, but I think what the others posted (not really harsh IMO... more factual) is true. the catholic diocese heavily encourages parishoners to be locals.... and frowns upon people suddenly joining a church that is not their local church soon before receiving a sacrament (especially marriage).

we officially joined our church a year before our wedding, but we also live 2 blocks away, so there was no problem. I know our church (which is over 100 years old and rather cute) turns many couples away who want to get married there but are not parishoners/locals.

This being said, the diocese doesn't seem to mind if you move and still attend your prior chuch....

So, you may encounter problems... hopefully you will not. good luck!

Re: Going to look at churches Sunday

And here is something else to think about... If you were not married in a Catholic church, technically they do not recognize the marriage as valid! At least that is what the Reverend who married us told us. We got married in a Protestant line church since DH was previously married in a Catholic church. Now, do you think that even if you went to your local parish they would have a problem baptizing your DC b/c you weren't married in a Catholic church? Chat Icon Chat Icon I bring this up b/c it is something I have been thinking about for myself.

DH and I moved to my neighborhood less than a year ago and have not been to the local Catholic church. Truth be told, we were both never church goers to begin with. I wish all churches just welcomed people in because they want people to be closer to God, not b/c of living in a particular zip code.

I just became a godmother last month... the father was previously married, so their marriage was outside of the church. their children were still welcomed... so I don't think that is really a problem, mercifully.....

It is not a problem
I wasn't married in a church and we had DD baptized into the Catholic faith.
