God parents
Has anyone ever heard of having 2 god fathers instead of one god mother and a god father. Dh and I only have brothers and I honestly don't think we will be having more then one dc so I don't want to exclude either brother. Is this allowed?

The only thing I've ever heard of that is close to this was that I knew someone who had a "stand in" god father because the "real" god father couldn't make the christening. I don't know about having two god fathers, though if they did allow it I'd be surprised.

Re: God parents
This is the Catholic church we're talking about here so I doubt it. But I have no idea for certain- it might depend on your parish.

Not in the Catholic church but why not only have one for the actual church but 2 for real life.

Re: God parents
The other issue is I really don't have a woman I want for the god mother anyway. And I think have a official one will be insulting to the other...maybe I'm just being crazy

Re: God parents
My cousin had two Godmothers for her son's baptism. They found a church that would allow it (non-Catholic so I'm not sure about that).

I looked in to this because I have one sister and two brothers but it specifically states on the websites for both of the churches I would use that it has to be one male and one female and same sex god parents would not be allowed. Like some of the PPs have said you would probably have better luck at a non-Catholic church.

Re: God parents
I think you should explain the situation to the priest at your church. We're interfaith and I think I had heard in the past that only one godparent actually has to be catholic., so I can't see why it can't be 2 males. Churches have more latitude than you might think and there are dispensations for everything.
Take my wedding for example. SO many people told us we'd never be able to have a priest AND a Rabbi in a catholic church, we'd never be able to do the jewish ceremony parts etc etc. We basically did a full jewish ceremony intertwined with the catholic ceremony with no issues. if we'd wanted a huppah we could have had one.
Our wedding witnesses were 2 Catholics, a Jew, and Muslim, too.

Re: God parents
According to an article I just read when I googled it, a godparent can't be in a mixed marriage and can't use birth control.
That basically eliminates me from contention on the first and everyone I know on the 2nd.
I know if my sister ever had kids, I'd be asked to be the godmother. I can't see the church telling me I can't because my DH is Jewish. That's ridic.
A lot of the "written" rules are not what's followed.
For example, when we got married I had to sign the famous paper about doing everything in my power to raise my kids Catholic and yadda yadda, but how the priest explained this to me (without prompting btw) was that maybe everything in your power is having a thoughtful and prayerful conversation with your spouse about it and deciding it's best to do it a different way.

This might be an option as well. Just have to find 2 women.

Re: God parents
From what I understand, some churches will allow both to stand on the altar but only one on the certificate. Just don't tell anyone who is the one on the certificate.
As another poster mentioned though, churches don't all have the same rules as one another.

Re: God parents
I have a cousin that did this for her DS. He has 2 godfathers and yes, it was performed in a Catholic church on Long Island.
However, the priest was a family member, so not sure if he granted them extra leniency or something.
I know someone that only had a godmother, no godfather named for her kids also.

One could be the godfather and the other one technically a witness, but no one has to really know.
For my wedding, we had 2 of the witnesses sign the ketubah and 2 sign the catholic wedding certificate, but they were all co-equal and no one really knew the difference..
Actually my friend who I said was Jewish has a Jewish dad but was raised Catholic so our ketubah was technically signed by a catholic and a muslim. Our catholic witnesses were both catholic though.
At any rate, there ARE ways around it, so just speak with your parish priest.

Which is a valid argument but it still doesn't mean your brother wouldn't be a good god father.
Would your husband consider looking into a different catholic church that might do the same sex god parents?
Or perhaps, since your bil is more active in his church he could maybe work something out with a priest there?
ETA: I agree with a PP who mentioned talking to your priest and seeing what he says, you might be sweating this all for nothing.

They were probably a godfather and a witness.
The Catholic church does not allow 2 godparents of the same sex no matter who are you....I tried and I have a family member in the church.

Re: God parents
Yeah I was just wondering if it was heard of. Dh is a lecture and very active in his church so it may not be a problem just didn't want to broach the subject without some prior knowledge cause I would have no problem going to a different church but dh is a different story. To me a church is a church

I believe in the Catholic Church you only need one Godparent. It just became a custom to have 1 of each.
