One of my college roommates is a Lara and we NEVER called her Lara. Always "La" 
How about just a single letter? Like E.
NO ONE can mess with that!
I hate nicknames... to this day I mourn being called by my full name. Even on LIW i tried so hard to never go by anything other than my full name... but somehow, someway, the nickname crept its way in there.

With our name it ALWAYS does!
My parents and family always called me my full name, I always introduce myself as my full name but people always shorten it

Good points BUT imo there is also a difference between a "nickname" and a shortening that someone uses like when they yell for you (usually people who see you constantly).
For one example- the Sophia/Soph. You might yell Soph but it would be weird to refer to someone as Soph. Another example- more common- is Brian and Bri. Your mom might yell Bri but no one would say "Bri told me..." or a teacher wouldn't say "Bri".
I think that's important to remember b/c people will shorten in ways that don't even make sense.
exactly...we named DD esme "EZ-MEE"
i have an uncle that says "hi ez" but nobody else calls her that. they address her by her whole name.
