Getting on/off the island

Is it just my imagination or has it gotten worse the last few years? There is just no good way to go and no good time to leave. There is so much traffic at ever hour of the day! And they continue building condos everywhere I look...where are all of these people coming from? And how are they going to get around??

Re: Getting on/off the island

Yes, yes and yes.
It gets worse every year.
We have had to start leaving for road trips to NJ or PA at 5 am.
If you are not over the bridge by 6 am you are screwed.
And even leaving at 5 am we hit traffic near the bridges.
It makes me not want to go on any road trips.

And yes, they keep building on every last bit of land- without the infrastructure to support it.

LI is becoming a real toilet.

Re: Getting on/off the island

It’s realy horrible.

For the morning ...The only time to get off LI is at 4am. Honestly ... DH has to travel a couple times a month and if he doesn’t leave by then, it’s a disaster

I feel like every time I go visit my family in NJ, I leave at 10-10:30am. That usually works for me. GPS says 1 hr 45m and it take me about 2.5 hours. And thats mostly construction on the belt.

Rush hours are no longer small windows. Plus don’t forget those speeding weave in and out of traffic morons who cause 4 car accidents that then slow everything down even more.

Re: Getting on/off the island

It is getting so bad to get just about anywhere.
Even the local streets are getting congested, as people are learning how to get around the highways.
And is seems like everyone is raging when they drive.
DH is one of those.

Couple of weeks ago I had to drive to Freehold, NJ.
Going over the Throgs Neck, Cross Bronx to the GWB, down the turnpike was actually my best bet. I despise the Cross Bronx, but going south and over the Verrazano would have added 30 minutes to the long-to-begin with trip.

eta : traffic is one of the reasons I gave up on the express bus from Queens to Manhattan. It was taking 2+ hours to get home, a 12-mile trip.
Freaking ridiculous.

It really is insane! Sometimes we think about leaving late at night or super early AM but then I’m always paranoid about drunk drivers! Mid day used to be a safe(ish) time to go but traffic just seems to be all day long lately.

Yes! It's crazy! It took my brother 3.5 hours to get to Dix Hills on Thursday. He lives in NYC and left at 3, which is not ideal, but still before true rush hour. It's a 30 mile trip.

I don't know why they keep building either. IT's so unaffordable. The condos they built are still not affordable to young people or retired people. The ones at the Wyandanch train station go for more than $2K a month in rent. Many of them sit empty. Same goes for the ones they built in Patchogue.

$2k a month to live in Wyandanch? Um, no thanks,
they are nuts

I agree. Whenever I go back and visit LI, I just shake my head at the crazy traffic. It’s insane. I mean we have traffic here, but not like LI. It’s just so congested on LI. And some drivers really are crap at driving.

But I have definitely noticed a change in the past few years.

Yep, it's terrible. Depending on where we are going, sometimes we pay the $80 to take the ferry across to Connecticut just to avoid having to drive off the island. Not that Connecticut traffic is all that much better. Taking the ferry can be inconvenient (schedules don't always work and they are sometimes sold out) and somewhat expensive. It seems crazy to me to have to spend $80 just to leave the island peacefully... but the only other option is basically to make it off of Long Island *before* the butt crack of dawn, so you are exhausted before you even start!

I was wondering the same about the condos they built near Westbury Target. They’re 2-4K for 1 bedrooms. They advertise that it’s a short commute to midtown but not really! When you include driving 10-15 min to get to LIRR station.

Yes, I hate this. I've dramatically cut our trips that require driving off this island. Unless it's taking the ferry and going north!

I’ve lived here for 4 years and it’s been crap the whole time.

Honestly, it’s the entire metro area. Westchester and Connecticut aren’t much better and I have friends in jersey who tell me it’s a nightmare. The only difference is you’re already on the mainland.

While I’m ALWAYS up for LI bashing, I feel like this is just the nature of the beast given the proximity to the city.

There is now talk of a tunnel from Bayville to Rye. They claim it will alleviate traffic, but I think it will actually make it worse. With all of cuomos plans for trucking routes and what not, the island is doomed.

We live in NJ but visit family at least once a month. We always take the GWB and Throgs neck because we end up hitting less traffic then cutting across staten island. We make sure to leave after 8 PM on Friday or before 10am on Saturday morning and Sunday heading back we wont leave until after 830pm.

I went to NJ on Friday (left at 7:30 PM). Took almost 2 hrs to go 35 miles. There was no construction, no accidents, nothing. SO FRUSTRATING. Chat Icon Chat Icon

One of the many reasons I need to move out of this area. Sitting in traffic every single day is just not worth it anymore.

That's the thing! If there is an accident, construction, something I can see it.
But lately it is all this traffic for NO REASON other than volume.
There are TOO many people on this God forsaken island. That's the issue.

The problem with LI that doesn't exist most other places, is there there are basically no real options. Other than the ferries, to get off the island, everyone has to funnel west over just a couple of bridges going through the biggest city in the US.

On the mainland, you could always go out of your way and take a longer way around, so even if it's more distance, you're not sitting in traffic. While not always ideal, you do have some options.

And it seems there is construction at every bridge (and all at the same time)!!! Chat Icon

That won’t happen. Bayville residents will protest. It’s kind of like the way the Seaford Oyster Bay was supposed to built with a bridge to Westchester.

Have you ever noticed the ends of the Seaford Oyster Bay?

Its not just traffic getting on or off. It’s everywhere! I avoid shopping because of crowds, parking lots, ppl who don’t know how to drive or park!

I live nearby, there has been wide spread outrage. Hopefully it wont, but rumor has it that Billy Joel is buying a house in Lloyd Harbor, him and Cuomo are tight...does he know something we don't know??

I've been with my husband for 20 year and he's from Suffolk (we lived in Brooklyn at the time). Consistently over the past 20 years, there has always been construction at different parts of the Belt Parkway (and it seems like some parts have been redone multiple times, like Coney Island Ave) and it is always a freakin' mess. It is seriously the worst road ever.
