Genetic counseling update and next steps for us...
On Wednesday DH and I met with a genetic counselor about the results of our AFP results. While she was happy that there were no physical markers on the baby during our level 2, she said one does not cancel the other. She spoke to us about being prepared for delivery if the baby does in fact have Downs Syndrome (my risk came back as 1:146). She said having an amnio isn't just for termination reasons - we DEFINITELY would not terminate so we thought an amnio wasn't even a posibility for us.
When we left the appt we were more "no" to an amnio than "yes" - I called my dr to talk about my level 2 results and to see what I should do. He reassured me that the place that would do the amnio does them every single day and it's a lot safer than you think. I was reading on the March of Dimes website that there was a study done which said your risk is really more like 1 in 1600 for miscarriage at a place with a highly qualified dr (which I believe I have).
So after a lot of talking and LOTS of crying, I am going to have an amnio tomorrow. I'm 27 years old - I never could have imagined I'd be going through this but we want to know a definitive yes or no so we can be prepared - there can be complications thoughout the pregnancy if the test comes back positive and we want to make sure that the way we're going about delivery would be our safest option.
I'd appreciate any prayers you can say for us tomorrow - I need to stay optimistic and know this is the best thing I can be doing in this situation. I'm scared but this is something I know we'll get through.

Try not to stress out about this. These tests aren't 100% accurate either. Just remember that you are preparing yourself for any situation.

I completly understand how you feel. I was 25 years old having an amnio and just could not believe it. I thought this wasn't even something I had to worry about yet. We did it for peace of mind and to prepare us for how our LO would be. We didn't find out for termination reasons.
Please let me know if you have any questions! Lots of prayers for you and your LO. Everything will be fine

Re: Genetic counseling update and next steps for us...
I don't know what to say. You will be in my prayers.
The only advice I can give you, is to try not to look at the big picture. Just take one day at a time. Get through the amnio and then see where that takes you. Everything could still be fine.
You are such an amazing person with a fantastic hubby and a tight, supporting, loving family.... no matter what happens, you and your baby are truly lucky.
Continue to stay optimistic. Regardless you will be a wonderful mom!!!
Love you!!! and if there is ANYTHING you need I am always here!!!!

Oh will def send tons of prayers your way! I agree with all the other girls who said it seems like this is the right thing - that you are doing the thing you need to do to protect your LO and have all the best care for them you can!
that everything goes well for you and your family tomorrow and that you are all filled with extra strength and love!

Re: Genetic counseling update and next steps for us...
I was in a similar situation when I was pregnant with my DD. Our level 2 did show some markers for trisomy 18. We went for an ultrasound with a perinatologist and none of the markers showed up again. He recommended against an amnio when my risk was similar to yours. Maybe you can meet with a perinatologist first. I really like mine, Dr. HSu and Nassau Medical Center.
Please remember that the AFP test has a very high false positive rate
