Gender Mistake?

I've heard from a few people that they found out the gender of their baby while pregnant, but at birth the baby came out to be the opposite gender!

This makes me second guess if I'm really having a girl. Maybe they just weren't able to see the winkie? The tech at my anatomy scan (20 w) wasn't able to identify the gender, the Dr. was though. The Dr. said she was absolutely sure... but now I'm not!

Gender Mistake?

When they told us at my NT Scan that it was 70/30 chance a boy I called my sister immediately!! She told me of a story of a friend of her's being told it was a boy and the baby came out a girl. It doesn't happen THAT often but it does happen. She told me that sono's are only 80% accurate and to be 100% accurate you need an amino.

At 18.5 weeks I went to my sister and she did our gender reveal. She also said it was a boy and you could DEF see his schmekel! HAHA! At my anatomy scan at 19.5 weeks they also confirmed it and at my 3D sono at 26 weeks they confirmed it again. And then at my last sono at 31 weeks also confirmed it was a Chat Icon.

I'm sure it's a girl but if you aren't 100% just ask every time you have a sonogram. I registered for gender neutral anyway because it's our first but if he comes out as a she...it will just be that much more of a surprise.

Re: Gender Mistake?

I mentioned that scenario to my perinatologist and he basically said if anyone makes that mistake they have NO CLUE what they are looking at. Sooo if you trust your doctor and think he/she is competent, I wouldn't worry too much. By 20 wks, they are more likely correct than not.

Re: Gender Mistake?

Do you know when the next sono usually is? My 24 week appointment is in about 2 weeks...would they do one then?

I've heard it's more typical that they think girl and then later see boy...late bloomers lol.

BUT i had a friend who they said boy, then later on confirmed a girl.

It's never 100% I think!

See that's the thing. I went to the hospital for the scan and the tech couldn't determine the sex. The Dr. (whom I've never met) came in, looked around at the baby and said she was sure. But I'm thinking, how can she be so sure if the tech had no idea??

They didn't do a sono at my 24 week appt. After the anatomy scan we did a 3D scan at 26 weeks but we had to pay out of pocket for that and it was a special my doctor's office was running with the tech in the office (I go to Women for Women). After that I had a growth sono between 30-31 weeks. I don't think I have another sono until my due date but I'm not 100% sure. Ask your doctor at your next appointment when they do sonos from here until the end.

Re: Gender Mistake?

I think its more the exception than the rule- sono's now are pretty good! Maybe the sono tech couldnt get a good angle but when the doctor looked the baby had shifted

Re: Gender Mistake?

Happened to me!!! Told me my whole pregnancy I was having a girl! I even had a NST a week before I delivered because I was ten days late!!! I ended up having a c-section, and when they pulled the baby out and said it was a boy, I was in shock!! I told them they had the wrong baby!!! ( I was on a lot of pain killers ) :) My poor sister and SIL had to run around returning all the pink clothes to get him stuff to wear. He may have slept on pink sheets though, I had washed everything!! I learned my lesson, when they told me my DD was a girl, I didn't believe them!! My son is also 13, so this was a long time ago!!

happened to my sister... she was told she was having a girl and then when she had a c section they pulled out a boy! and this was only a few months ago. I don't get it with all the technology they have today too..

and my cousin was told a week before her baby shower that they made a mistake and she was having a girl, not a boy.

so, yes it does happen!

Re: Gender Mistake?

I know someone was told boy at 16 weeks and then told girl at 20 weeks and it turned out to be a girl in the end.

While it doesn't seem to be the norm for mistakes, it's clearly possible!!

Gender Mistake?

They are 80% correct. Usually anything before 20 weeks I wouldn't take as 80% because its hard to tell. One thing that was clear at my level 2 is that it is a Girl. She is laying tummy down side ways(hope it makes sense) so she is spine up but when I coughed she opened her legs and it was clear as day...no stump!

Re: Gender Mistake?

I've thought about this too.

I can see there being a mistake more frequently when told a girl instead of a boy.

At least for me, there was no mistaking that my lo is a boy. If I were told I was having a girl I would continuously question it until she actually arrived.

Gender Mistake?

Last year, my cousin was told initially that she was having a girl. Then she was told it was a boy. The day of her c-section, she was told it was a girl. She delivered a boy. They do get it wrong sometimes.

I have heard this but don't know anyone personally that it has happened to. At our anatomy scan I asked to see before she told us. Although, wasn't sure where to look at first and was very nervous LOL But clear as day baby is a a Boy!Chat Icon She gave us a pic of the "gender" and I had to go back to get additional pics and saw baby in 3D. He's a mover so his boy parts were clear.
If you are feeling unsure, maybe call the office and ask if you can have a sono take a peak again to clear your mind.Chat Icon

Yeah, I'm definitely going to ask to take another look. I just keep thinking about how crazy it would be if I got all these girly things and a little boy popped out! Chat Icon

That's the thing, if they said boy and I could see his winkie, I'd feel more confident. Since my LO wasn't cooperating the whole time, I feel unsure. So frustrating!

I completly understand! I would not be settled until I saw with my own eyes. I heard if it were a girl, you would see 3 lines and obv a boy you would see parts. Keep us posted Chat Icon

I have another friend also! she had the dr put the gender in an envelope, had a bakery make the cake, did the gender reveal with friends after they went out to dinner and there was the blue icing. Sadly she was bummed because she already had a boy, wanted a girl... but lo and behold, after she went back they changed it to girl!!

If your Dr. Said definitely girl I would assume they are right.
I was supposed to be a boy. My parents were shocked when they heard it's a girl, but sonograms were not what they are today.

I was nervous about this the whole time. They said girl at the 20 week scan, but the way she phrased it "looks like a girl" made me nervous.

The first thing I asked after they took baby out (i had c-section) was "is it still a girl?"

It was!
