Fresh herbs

I love using fresh herbs to cook. During the summer, I keep plants in my backyard. Unfortunately in the winter I don't have a good place to keep them so I just buy the herbs in the supermarket. They always seem to dry out before I use them all. It's such a waste! How do you keep fresh herbs that aren't part of a plant? I'd like to be able to use them for more than one day!

Re: Fresh herbs

I hate to admit it, because I am not a big fan of hers. But I use Rachel Ray's tip. Wrap fresh herbs in a slight damp papertowel and put in a ziplock bag. I used to close the ziplock, but learned that if it stays open the herbs last a little bit longer. HTH

Re: Fresh herbs

I bought an aerogarden on clearence last year and I love it! I have a 6 pod one. I grow freshherbs in it year round because I don't have an outdoor area. You can find coupons online and decent deals on them. I always grow basil and have grown thyme, parsly, mint, arugula, oregano, and sage. I have unsuccessfully grown cilantro and chives.

Re: Fresh herbs

I do the Rachel Ray trick or chop the herbs and keep them in containers in the freezer.

Re: Fresh herbs

Waldbaums (and possibly other supermarkets) carries the tubes of fresh herbs, so I buy those and keep them in my fridge. I LOVE them!

Here's a pic of what they look like. I find them in the produce aisle right near the fresh herbs.

Re: Fresh herbs

I buy the small clamshell packages of organic herbs at Waldbaums, keep them in my veggie drawer.
Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano.
These stay fresh for a couple of weeks.

I don't really have space for this.

I'll have to try this. I've thrown out so much basil and rosemary this year!

Are these the ones that come in the plastic?

Re: Fresh herbs

I actually saw a small, enclosed, herb garden the other day in the store - it was about the size of a small flower put, but it did have a plastic (or maybe glass) covering. I almost bought it b/c, I thought it owuld be great for keeping my pets away from the plant, but they only had basil, which I hate.

I guess if I had 3 cats too this would be an issue for me as well.
