Freddy
worse today. He won't get out of bed at all, won't eat. He has a doc appt tomorrow and I hope he doesn't dig his heels in and refuse to go.
This is just terrible. He wants to go back to the nursing home..

I'm sorry. I'm sure this is such a huge adjustment for him and that it's scary. I hope he's up and around soon.

Re: Freddy
we are all beside ourselves. Tomorow, the social worker will call us too to talk about what's going on. He hasn't even changed his clothes since Friday..no shower, nothing.
He is so depressed and angry. He just tells us all to go away. Imagine how hard it is for mom and dad to live like this with him.
I don't know what's going to happen, but something's got to give.
We are all so deflated.
I don't know who I feel worse for, Fred or mom and dad.

Re: Freddy
I'm so sorry you Freddy and your parents have to go through this. TBI is so hard...Im sure Freddy is feeling depressed and on top of that his injury is adding to his mood.
My brother goes through his moods too...one day he may be happy and the next day nasty for no reason. It sucks

Re: Freddy
Wow, I am so sorry! I hope he goes to the doc. Some people find it hard in reality to depend on family during something like this. Is going back to the home even an option?
I hope everything works out for the best for everyone

Re: Freddy
I'm so sorry to hear Freddy is having a harder time adjusting then expected.
Hopefully the social worker will be able to shed some light and insight into the situation.

Re: Freddy
So sorry to hear this susan. Is there anything we can do for you? Maybe him going back to the nursing home or getting a place by himself or an assisted living type facility might work? I am sure the SW will give you some options tommorrow. I feel so bad for your parents seen they moved all the way across. And I know they were kinda looking forward to helping out. You really cant help when someone doesnt want the help. Let me know what happens tommorrow. Again if myself or dh can help you out we will. let me know!

Re: Freddy
update:
We went tonight and got him out of bed easily. We brought him some mags and I pulled out fresh clothes and told him to get up and get dressed.
We ordered some food and we ate. Fred excused himself to go to the bathroom and he was gone a while so we went to check on him and he was back in bed. I asked him what happened and he said he couldn't get into the bathroom with the wheelchair. I showed him how to get into the bathroom without it and he was happier. Could you imagine not being able to do the simplest things? My heart just broke.
After dinner we got him to agree to shave and talked about the doc tomorrow. He shaved and washed up and changed his clothes. He said he would be ready to go the doc all showered.
My parents watched how I got him to do these things and told me I have a gift. I told them I have more practice at it since I was the one doing this longer. They have to learn the way to deal with him.
I promised him knowing full well this isn't happening anytime soon, but if the doc says he can drive then we will go to the cadillac dealer.
It was motivational for him. It was a tactic I had to employ.
We'll see what happens tomorrow. Wish us luck.

thanks. I hate to ask but he seems to respond to others well, like the visiting nurse and some other people he didn't even know.
I'll let you know, but maybe a fly by with Gilly will cheer him up.
Let's see what happens tomorrow. He seemed to genuinely like all of us together tonight having dinner, yucking it up. I even took a picture with his prosthesis as a joke and we all laughed.
We left and he was in a great mood. I'm sure once the therapists come in and the social worker comes in to assess the situation, things will get more "normal". Also, my parents have to learn to let him be and only offer the help if really needed..show him how to be independent. I showed him how to get in the shower tonight.
I'm thinking that we should have had a home health care aid right away, but nobody could have anticipated this. St. Johnland didn't recommend it. They released him on a Friday when the weekend no one is working. Things could have been handled better upon discharge. They didn't even do any community re-entry with him.

Re: Freddy
I'm so sorry it's getting tougher -- or, well, up and down as it seems... Remember, sometimes these things are 2 steps forward, one step back. I'm sure your parents will learn to handle him better. Just give them time to pick up on how to do it and to adjust. I definitely think he's going through some depression. I hope the social worker has some good ideas for you when you speak to him or her.
Good luck!!

Re: Freddy
well, they got him to the doc but it was a struggle. he didn't even want to change out of the clothes he slept in.
Very depressed and mood changes are manic. I hope the doc can help.
He should also see a psychiatrist and a neurologist.
I hope the next few days will get better.

Sorry to hear that Freddy is still having a difficult time adjusting, but I'm glad you're able to help out and he seems to be doing better. Your parents just need to learn how to deal with him, hopefully they'll get the hang of things soon, but situations like this takes some time.
