Re: Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
Every doc will probably tell you a little different. Maybe my doc is a little on the stricter side? I don't know, but I'll share with you what he told me, and I followed what he said very closely...
Absolutely no alcohol, not even a drop. He goes "and don't think that a sip at even New Year's is OK, because it's not!" I was like OMG I don't even drink a lot to begin with, this guy is talking to me like I'm an alcoholic I mean, literally, I'm a "from time to time" wine drinker, that's it. So, it was pretty shocking.
He said the same with caffeine - absolutely not one drop, nothing. This was no biggie for me as I've never even tasted coffee in my life, never drink it. The only caffeinated beverage I ever had pre-pregnancy was coca-cola (and that was rare) and iced tea (and that was rare too). So, I just stopped those two. If you still crave a little soda or something bubbly there's Pellegrino and Root Beer - 99.9% of Root Beers are decaf, which is cool. Just check the label :)
Other stuff he added: bacon, hot dogs, deli meats, cold cuts, anything that "sits out", soft serve because he felt that all of those places are "filthy" and don't clean their machines, un-pasteurized cheeses (feta and brie, for example), fish - anything with a fin lol, anything that swims, he said. Again, no loss for me as I never ate that anyway. He said that SHELLFISH is OK in moderation as long as it is COOKED. He said absolutely not an ounce of anything raw - especially things like sushi. I never ate sushi before so again, no loss. Undercooked red meat - everything should be medium well or more. And runny, over-easy, etc. eggs. Nothing like that. I think that was it. When in doubt, he said, skip it
He scares me a little so when he says something, I listen and sometimes I can hear or see him lecturing me
At the end of the day, I'm sure you'll be fine if you just be careful. I didn't have any problem whatsoever with sticking to the above guidelines - none. I did try and LIMIT sugar (just because I was doing that pre-pregnancy anyway). I don't like sugar and it doesn't like me. But that's my own personal preference. I also try and eat organic - eggs, meat, dairy, etc. and I also try and NEVER eat high-fructose corn syrup or additives or fake sugar or diet crap - any of that fake stuff. I'd rather have the real deal in moderation. KWIM?
My doc did suggest, for me, and everyone might be a little different but he wanted me to have at least a large glass a day of skim milk. So, I bought organic skim milk and I drink that daily. I don't know - he just said he wanted me to have that. I've literally had it every single day for almost nine months now lol. I should be MOOing
Hope that helps

Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
I am so glad the midwives are of the "everything in moderation" school of thought. I see no point in putting the fear of God into pregnant women over things like bacon and cold cuts.

I'd hate to have your doctor!!
You're right every doctor is different, but I have to say yours seems a bit extreme. Almost like he's trying to instill fear into you the way he lectured you about some foods. I wouldn't like that.

Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
In life, there are no absolutes. I will not say what you should or shouldn't do because I am not you, you do what you are comfortable with, what I will say are what I did and what I believe. I ate what I wanted, in moderation. I didn't drink alcohol, but I'm not a big drinker. I didn't eat sushi because I don't like raw fish. I ate a ton of peanut butter. I ate a ton of tuna, with avocado. Because I wanted it. I had no issues. I had no GD. No pre-e. My baby was perfect, and still is (according to his doctor) I don't know what studies your doc has done to tell you to avoid these things, but if you trust them, go with it it can't hurt. I don't like fear mongering though. You're pregnant. Unless there are serious health risks, do what you want and what you feel comfortable with, because 9 months of being scared of "what I can and can't eat" is 9 months TOO LONG. Be pregnant, enjoy the moment and anticipate that bundle of joy in your arms.

Re: Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
My doctor said absolutely nothing had to be avoided completely except alcohol, but she would advise against consuming raw fish in large quantities. I asked about everything I could think of - caffeine (one or two cups a day is fine), artificial sweeteners like in crystal lite (also fine in moderation), deli meats (reputable place and in moderation should be fine), soft cheeses like 95% are pasteurized here anyways and on and on.
When our parents were pregnant they didn't have like any of these new 'restrictions' so really, I don't think it's that big a deal.

You should have been there for the "don't do drugs" lecture
That's how he is - he has literally been doing this longer than I've been living. I ADORE him and a lot of people wouldn't - he would likely rub a lot of people the wrong way and that's kind of what I like most about him.
The restrictions he put in place are a lot - but, for me, I'm kind of lucky because he put the brakes on foods and drinks I literally never even ate before being PG. So, giving it up? No problem.
Now, if it was something I really love I'd be SAD! Thank Goodness it's not

Trust me, no offense taken here, I know a lot of people who would NOT jive with him. I love him because IDK I just love his way. But, my mom and sister? They are not fans - we go to the same practice and they see another doc within that practice.
The stuff that we are dealing with, being pregnant, is UBER personal - I think every doc at one point or another is bound to rub someone the wrong way. It's just the nature of it. I've seen every doc there, we have five total, and every.single.one has peeved me at least once. But, they went to medical school and I did NOT so I just shrug it off.

I agreed with everything you said until you got to "they well to medical school and I did not"
You HAVE to be your own advocate and do your research, doctors are not God. They are not always right and like you said every doctor is different so clearly if one says ok to alcohol and one doesn't you have to research it yourself and make your own INFORMED decision.

Re: Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
And the funny thing is I was given orders to have a cup of coffee- or some form of caffeine every day. I have kidney stone issues and the dr wanted to make sure I kept my urine moving and not sitting and forming stones which is common in pregnancy. I know that's the reason why for me- but the point is - how bad can a cup of coffee be if I was TOLD to drink it daily as Dr's orders? To say - NOT ONE DROP- that seems a bit extreme. Even the part about not ONE sip of wine. I mean in all honesty- I can't see how one sip of ANYTHING (with the exception of maybe rat poison) can do any harm in such a tiny, tiny amount.

I think there's a reason why they say you can have up to 200mg of caffeine per day.

So basically your doctor thinks you were a alcoholic drug addict who got hopped up on caffeine, sushi and artificial crap before getting pregnant!! That would annoy the crap out of me. I couldn't be as easy going as you are about that even if I didnt eat that stuff!
Sadly, he told me that years ago he used to "beat around the bush" so much more and he used to be very "hands off" just assuming that telling a pregnant woman to not do drugs and not drink is "common sense" and those women should "know better", so it didn't need to be stated so clearly -- he said, sadly, he found that out the hard way when babies were being born with major issues associated to their mothers drinking and doing drugs while pregnant. Now, would they have done that anyway? Even if he said not to? Probably! Who does that sort of stuff when pregnant? But, if he TOLD them not to and they did it anyway - at least he tried - he is then covered, legally and morally, but because he assumed "who would do that?", he felt awful and responsible. So, he said that now, he takes no chances. And he said that he can never ASSUME someone is going to do the right thing. I mean, I don't think I look like someone who does that sort of stuff but can you judge a book by it's cover? I respected his feelings because of that.

I agree with certain things but 90% of the time, I personally feel that they are the professional and they know what is best. There are going to be exceptions to every rule but I'm a very black and white thinker. So, most of the time, he rules. But I totally respect if someone does something different than me - I would never even state for a SECOND an opposition to that.

My SILs have even been encouraged to have a glass of red wine once well into the 30s to help ease stress. Again, at that stage of the game, not much is going to anything to the baby. Except the aforementioned rat poison.
Or heroin.

100% right. This is why I prefaced my answer with, my doctor is extreme. I know he is. But, I trust him, I like him. I understand why others don't want to go to him and then I understand why he has a ton of people that love him.
Would I have questioned some of the stuff if I was a coffee drinker? Probably! But I never had to because I don't drink it. So, for me, it was a non-issue.

(MandJZ - this is not aimed at you at all just thought your comment was a good spinoff for what I wanted to say. Nothing personal to your comment.....)
My mother said this exact same thing to me over the weekend and my response (coming in as someone who struggled with IF and with other health issues since I'm 10 years old) was 'yes, and I'm the spitting image of health as is the rest of my generation'.
I honestly think there is something to what our generation's parents did or didn't do (and I'm not talking drugs/drinking here as my parents don't touch either) either in their lives in general or in their pregnancies that impacted our generation's health. it seems every other woman I talk to these days has a thyroid, autoimmune, IF or other issue (and no one knows about my IF so it's not that I just run in a circle of IF people).
It just makes me wonder why our gen is so unhealthy. I know a lot of it has to do with what we do to ourselves but I can speak for myself when I say I eat as healthy as is possible (I've tried to clean up my diet in the past and literally couldn't because everything I ate was textbook), I workout regularly, I don't drink, I don't smoke etc etc and yet I've had health issues my whole life.
I agree we can't be plagued with fear throughout our pregnancies but aside from some of the things I have to eat/drink to battle MS (still in first tri) I'm going to work my hardest to be healthy for this LO.

So true. My mother rolled her eyes at almost everything that I was told -- especially all the testing and the constant blood work and the fear of God stuff. She never had any of that stuff and hardly any restrictions at all so, she just looks at me like really? I ate that! I did that!

ITA!
I've been dealing with phlebitis in my hand. My PCP gave me a Rx for penicillin to treat and it helped tremendously but I guess I needed a few more days worth b/c it didn't completely go away and then it came back full force. So I went back to my Dr. but saw a different one b/c the original Dr. was on vacation. She insisted that I didn't need penicillin, just ice. Meanwhile my hand felt like someone was lighting it on fire. I told her the penicillin worked wonders last time and I would feel more comfortable taking it again. I insisted, and she finally gave me the Rx. And guess what. I'm feeling about 95% better with 2 days of pills to go.

I hear what you're saying but on the flip side, my mom was super, super healthy during her pregnancy with me and I was born with congenital heart disease. I think the current generation's health issues are more to do with the increasingly technological and radiation and GMO-based environment we live in.
Of course EVERYONE wants to be healthy for their baby while pregnant. It's about finding a doctor you trust, and making choices YOU and your partner (the general you, not anyone in specific haha) are comfortable with, that's all.

My OB did not advise me at all on what to avoid. I have had deli sandwiches from a deli I trust many times this pregnancy, I eat soft-serve ice cream on occasion, I had a glass of sangria at a block party a few weeks ago. I lived on PBJ sandwiches in my first tri bc that was all I could stomach. I lived on soda in the first tri too bc it helped with ms.
I'm all about moderation & doing what you gotta do to feel comfortable.
Biggest myth of all is that you cant drink.

I totally agree and thank you for saying that because it's very true and no matter what anyone chooses to do, it doesn't mean that they think the way in which others do it is WRONG. At least, not me. I have friends who are on very different ends of the spectrum and then everything in between - I respect and love all of them equally. Just because I do or don't do something or my doc said A and theirs said B, I would never even so much as QUESTION their personal choices and decisions. That's their body and their life! I would do nothing but respect them and support them - especially for their differences.
