Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
What foods are you only eating in moderation and what foods are you cutting out completely??
Here is what my ob said to me:
MODERATION: Coffee- 2 cups per day then decaf. I drink one cup every other day then maybe i'll have hot cocoa. This is my treat.
Peanut butter- a spoonful every so often only because of possible peanut allergies.
Soft cheeses as long as its pasturized. I did eat some fresh mozzarella before I knew better. It was ok though but check on brie & goat cheese.
Cut out completely: Alcohol, high mercury seafoods like swordfish, grouper, tuna, deli cold cuts.
Soft ice cream because of possible bacteria in the machines?? Not sure about this one.
Would you agree? Thanks ladies.

Re: Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
I eat soft-serve. I just avoid cold-cuts and high-mercury fish. I have eaten heated cold-cuts a few times though. I would probably eat them from a deli that I trusted, though. My midwife told me its more about the slicer than then meat.

I eat soft serve ice cream! Just stay away from the high mercury fish,Tuna once a week, no more than 12oz of caffeine a day, soft cheese, sushi are both no no!
Drink plenty of water because dehydration can cause dizziness and uterine cramping.

I was never told about peanut butter (and I actually think the research about limiting exposure has changed, even to feed it to babies at a younger age to avoid allergies), or about soft serve ice cream. Everything else is pretty much what I was told.
Also, no honey b/c it's not pastureized. And limit nitrates from bacon, hot dogs, etc.

Cold cuts (unless heated) and raw or under cooked meats and fish should also be on the off limits list- due to risk of listeria contamination in the ice cream machine soft serve should also be avoided. Fresh mozzarella is safe as long as the milk is pasteurized. My OB did not mention anything about peanut butter.

My OB did not advise me at all on what to avoid. I have had deli sandwiches from a deli I trust many times this pregnancy, I eat soft-serve ice cream on occasion, I had a glass of sangria at a block party a few weeks ago. I lived on PBJ sandwiches in my first tri bc that was all I could stomach. I lived on soda in the first tri too bc it helped with ms.
I'm all about moderation & doing what you gotta do to feel comfortable.

Re: Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
Avoided: Cold cuts Alcohol obv. Fish high in mercury (which I wouldn't eat anyway) Mussles Hot dogs Non pasteurized cheeses macaroni salad/potato/cole slaw that's been out for awhile (which is something I guess I should always do). and deli cheese when I've seen it cut on the same slicer as meat.
Limited: Tuna fish
That's about it. I've ate pb&j's my whole pregnancy. This is the first I'm hearing about people avoiding them. I don't drink coffee so that wasn't an issue.

I think your list is pretty good and others have added to it as well. I will add shellfish, definitely honey, and my dr also said no to soft serve due to possible listeria on the machines.

Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
I wasn't really told anything. I believe in everything in moderation.
I had sushi right after I first found out. I needed it one last time lol. I also had a tiny slice of lox a couple of weeks ago. It's been an almost constant craving for me. I told my family that they need to bring me a bagel w/ lox to the hospital.
I've had roast beef but it's always been heated.
I am not a coffee drinker but I do like Diet Coke so I don't stop myself from having a can or 2 per day which is well under the 200mg of caffeine.
I won't drink alcohol but I'm not much of a drinker anyway.
Oh and I've had feta but it's been pasteurized.

Re: Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
The only things doc said no to were tuna and hot dogs and other high mercury fish. Caffeine to be kept under 200mg.. He said lox was fine and the last time there was listeria, it was on spinach so didnt forbid cold cuts either. Every dr is different and I know pregnant DOCTORS who have eaten sushi and drank alcohol in moderation so I think the any Forbidden Lists should be taken with a grain of salt.

You only have to avoid unpasteurized honey, which is pretty impossible to get lol. I avoided alcohol, and watched my caffeine intake. The rest is up to you. I ate wishing and cold cuts weekly last time, but avoid them this time lol totally random.

I have eaten soft cheeses- I just make sure the milk used is pasteurized. Pre-pregnancy I would have honey from a local bee farm, so I just switched to buying pasteurized honey.

Re: Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
Thank you ladies. This list is very helpful. We all seem to agree moderation is key. I will enjoy my cup of coffee on the weekends with no worries. I'm not a cold cut eater so its not a problem.
About the cheese, if a hot pannini or wrap has melted fresh mozzarella, does that mean its ok because the potential bacteria is cooked away?

That's fine.
I've still avoided fresh mozzerella if I don't know if it's pasteurized or not. But I'm paranoid lol.

When I was researching all of this, I read that the water that they stretch the mozz. in is hot enough to kill listeria anyway, so fresh mozz. is fine. I would imagine if it is melted, it is more that fine. However, what happens after the cheese is stretched, can contaminate the cheese all over again as well as how it is packaged and stored. When I buy it, I get it at Fairway, watch the guy make it and hand it to me, right out of the water, and that makes me feel better about it.
But everyone has to do what they and their dr/midwife is comfortable with.

Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
I avoided cold cuts, hot dogs and sushi my entire pregnancy. I had 1 cup of coffee a day. But my son was practically made out of peanut butter! My breakfast almost every morning was peanut butter on a sandwich thin, and towards the end of my pregnancy all I craved were Reece's Peanut Butter Sundaes from Friendly's because it was so hot out!

I avoid alcohol, caffeine(havent had any since BFP) cold cuts, non-pasteurized cheese, deli salads unless I make them.
I limit: Splenda, Decaf tea, Decaf diet Soda, hot dogs, bacon, fish, shrimp, loster, and most sugary snacks (I have gestational diabetes). I also limit my milk intake because of sugar and carbohydrate amounts. I use almond milk unsweetened instead.
I do eat Peanut butter all the time (actually recommended by my nutritionist) and if I get soft serve it is usually low fat/sugar frozen yogurt. I also substitute cold cuts with vegan tofurky bologna, its good for lunch and tastes pretty good. Can't wait for my first ham and cheese on a roll though!

Re: Forbidden Foods & beverage guidelines
just alcohol, sushi and certain types of fish. I don't worry about the cheese - you really have to go out of your way to find unpasteurized cheese, it's not easy! I don't eat a lot of cold cuts, but i have had here and there. You can get listeria from a lot more than cold cuts - like bagged spinach or lettuce or canteloupe. As long as its a clean place i would eat it.
i haven't had honey but i figured that would be something to possibly stay away from since DS couldn't have it for a long time....but doc never said anything about it.
