? for those who considered their labor to be short
I'm curious to know if there's anything I can be doing now to avoid the 20 hour labor and 2.5 hours of pushing I had last time. Any advice from BTDT moms?
Edited to clarify: What did you do while you were pregnant that you feel helped you have a short labor? Did you exercise every day, some days, etc?

The 2nd one is usually always much quicker than the 1st. My 1st ds labor was 23 hours and 1.5 hours of pushing. DS #2 was induced but only 3 pushes. DS #3 5.5 hours labor and 1 push.

Pushing is much easier the second time around. I pushed for an hour with dd1, 5-10 min with dd2 (she was posterior or would have been even faster) and dd3 was out in about 30 seconds!!!

Like others have said, second time around usually goes much quicker. With my first, I pushed for an hour, my second, 10 minutes, and my third was out in 3 pushes.

I would avoid an epidural for as long as possible...it slows down labor.

This is not always true. I requested an epidural pretty much immediately after they broke my water. They broke my water when I was at 6.5 and I was 10cm dilated within 45 minutes. The doctor had me "wait" at full dilated until I felt that I couldn't not push anymore, wanting the baby to really drop and have gravity work on its own. I pushed for about 40 minutes and DD flew out!

1st dd was 14 hours labor with 4 hours of pushing. yes 4 hours 2nd dd labor was 4 hours all together and from 10 + cm she was out within 10 mins. I didn't do anything different. I did have epi both times, and I was strep b + and had just had the anti biotics literally down to the min before i had her

In my case, I think it was good genes. My mom and sister also labored relatively quickly. i got to the hospital at 1. They broke my water at 3:30. I got an epidural at 4:30 and I had him by 5:30 - about 40 mins of pushing. The epidural literaly started working as I was pushing.

As my doula said the first one paves the way. I should have listened but instead gave birth on my couch after 3 hrs of labor and a few pushes

#1- labor 7 hours, 40 minutes of pushing #2- labor 4 hours, 3 minutes of pushing #3- labor 4 hours (would have been shorter if they broke my water earlier) and 3 minutes of pushing.

? for those who considered their labor to be short
Unfortunately the second isn't always faster. My first was 65 hours. My second was 81 hours and ended up a c section.
Both were inductions.

I think it is what it is, and you can't do much about it. There are some things that should generally help - like walking - since it allows gravity to bring the baby down. But your body will dilate however it's going to. I went from 4 to 9cm in an hour. I was just lying in the hospital bed since my contractions were on top of one another. I didn't do anything to progress my labor, it just happened.

I had something similar. Everyone thought #3 would be a piece of cake... I was progressing, stopped (doc was puzzled) & then boom, delivered... every pregnancy is different.

Didn't for me either. Got the epidural at around noon and DS2 was born at 2:45pm.
I started contractions at around 6:30am and DS2 was born at 2:45pm. I thought it was quick. I had a failed induction and C-section with DS1. DS2 was born past his due date. I took a long walk/hike the day before. I credit that to him finally deciding to make his appearance at 40w3d. At exactly 40w I was only fingertip dilated.

i am NOT considering my labor from the time my water broke. I was 7.5 cm when I got to the hospital with my second, and in very active labor...they ended up needing to break my water, but I surely do consider those hours before my water broke labor!
with my first, my labor was 7 hours, and i pushed for almost30 minutes. Of the 7 hours, I was only in the hospital for about 4.5 hours...i labored at home for most of it, this way i was able to keep moving. once i got to the hospital i got my epi.
my second was about 6 hours and i pushed for about 20 minutes. I was in the hospital for about 4 hours for this one as well.
I dont think there is much you can really do. i tried to remain active and walked as much as possible before going to the hospital and getting the epi

I was induced. I have no clue when my water broke. From the time they put cervadil in to the time Hailey was born was 12 hours....
Cervadil at 7pm, Contractions started at around 11pm. I got the Epi somewhere around 3:30am. She was born at 6:39am

It was an induction. Water was broken by the dr about 28 hours before I ended up with the c section.

Edited to clarify: What did you do while you were pregnant that you feel helped you have a short labor? Did you exercise every day, some days, etc?
I exercised 6 days a week for my entire pregnancy and had a quick delivery. I literally went to the gym the day before I had my son and worked out. (18 months later and strangers at the gym still ask me how my DS is doing.) I am not sure if this made me labor easier though. I really think a lot of it is genetics. My mom has never worked out a day in her life and had 5 easy labors.

I did prenatal yoga while pregnant with my first, which I thought helped with my labor. But i never had time to do with with my second and i was fortunate enough to still have a quick labor...so im not really sure it helped

I would say most people are not considering labor to begin when their water broke. Labor usually starts prior to the water breaking.
For me, I was in active labor for over 6 hours before they even broke my water.
