For those that put their pets down...
Did you stay with them and hold them as they died?
Is it horrible?

Re: For those that put their pets down...
Anyone I know who did said it was painful but when they look back, it helped them to heal and it was the way it had to be. I had a dog put down once but the circumstances were so different from yours. I could not be there at the time b/c I was very sick but I wish I go back and change that.

Re: For those that put their pets down...
When I had to have my cat put to sleep the vet came to the house cos she used to get stressed going there, I just held her and she fell asleep, it was very hard and I bawled my eyes out but the last thing she experienced was a cuddle from Mummy and a kiss. It is going to be one of the hardest things and I really feel for you

As a child, when our cat was put down, I did go in to see her body afterwards. It hit me hard.
I am so sorry you are going through this. It is so hard and so very sad.

First I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. My sister went in when my 17year old dog died. It was really sad for both of us, but we agreed it was better that someone was there.

Is it horrible? I could not. I felt too guilty, even though it is what I needed to do for Hans. I was a train wreck b/c it happened the day I came back to NY after having to take my grandfather off of life support. I was in no position to watch anyone else I love die in front of me
DH was there for his pup & although it was hard he said his dog looked peaceful - like he was going to take a nap

Re: For those that put their pets down...
I did, I stayed with Copper the entire time. My husband did not want to stay. I convinced him that he would greatly regret it, if he did not stay with him. He gave us so much during his life, it was the last thing we could do for him.
So he stayed, we both help him, Yes...very hard, but he deserved it, and I wold not have it any other way.
I have had to put a cat down and a dog down at this point. Both my babies. it is more peaceful than I would have thought, they really do just go to sleep. Still cried my eyes out though.

Re: For those that put their pets down...
In February my husband and I had to make the decision to let go of my Shawnee. It's a heartbreaking decision, and my heart absolutely goes out to you.
We were fortunate to find someone that would come to the house. I didn't want to put anymore stress on him. He was a larger dog, and his back legs had gone out.
My husband and I stayed with him the whole time. It was hard, but I think it's harder not doing it.

That is something that I cannot do. My dad had to be the one to go into the room and hold our sweet furbabies.
I am so sorry about your loss huggy:

Re: For those that put their pets down...
I went with a close friend as his cat of 18 years was put down. Ralph (the cat) just drifted off to sleep, quietly and peacefully. It was hard on my friend, but he was always glad he did. I'm so sorry you have to do this

Re: For those that put their pets down...
My DH is a vet, and I was in the room when my DH euthanized my friend's dog (my friend was also in the room).
Of course, we were all crying, it was so difficult, but for us, being there provided comfort in the long run, because we saw how peaceful of a transition it was...and I truly do believe it is just a transition, and their spirit goes on to another place.
This dog was euthanized at night, very late...and the entire hospital was quite. As soon as the dog passed, the other dogs in the practice began barking! It was so eerie, because all the dogs were sleeping and silent, before this dog passed away.
My DH has seen this on more than one occasion, and he believes that the other dogs have a sixth sense about spirits, and the knew the spirit left this world and was on to the next.
I am sorry you are going through this, and whatever you decide, to be there, or not to be there, just please take comfort that this is a very humane and peaceful way to pass. They honestly just simply fall asleep and are usually tranquilized before, so they are already calm and sleeping.
If there is anything I can do, please feel free to FM me.

Re: For those that put their pets down...
I've had to do this 4 times and each time I stayed with them until the end. I positioned myself right in front of them and looked in their eyes while talking to them. The last thing they saw and heard before they left this earth was me. It's, actually, a very peaceful death for them, but, it is not an easy thing to do. However, I wouldn't have it any other way. I felt they needed to be comforted and I needed to say goodbye. I know I'll do this with every dog I have.

I held my Pepper for a loooong time before the vet took her into the room. He asked my mom and I if we wanted to be there but I just couldn't. We went in afterwards and she looked so peaceful...that's how I wanted to remember her.
thinking of you today, Liza...you've got me all choked up!

This gave me the chills!!! Really makes you think, huh?
For me, it wasn't an option NOT to go into the room when my Smudge was put to sleep. I had gotten her when I was 7 years old--and when she was 19 years old, she got very sick.
Every day, I'm so glad I was there with her. I was the last person she saw, I was the last person to hold her. It's different for each person, but for me, that was very comforting. I looked straight into her eyes and cried as she took her last breath.
I know that I did the best thing for her. It's hard, there's no way around it, but you have to remember that you're ending your baby's suffering. Good luck, no matter what you decide.

Re: For those that put their pets down...
I know this is a very old thread...but I was doing a search. I hysterically cried while reading everyone's responses. We are going to have to put our dog to sleep either tomorrow or Saturday and I was not sure I could handle being in the room - I'm now convinced that I MUST be there with him when he goes....I'm going to be a complete wreck.

I'm sorry.
I felt thinking about it was actually worse than the procedure itself.
It's very peaceful. They look like they fall asleep. I just stood there and stroked his head and told him what a good boy he was. it's over in a couple minutes.
