the list from my practice/ hospital is much longer than that Chat Icon so , I mainly just stick to carbsChat Icon

See, and my doc told me to go easy on the carbs Chat Icon (to avoid extra weight gain and GD)

Easier said than done Chat Icon

I can't live w/out carbs!!!

one thing I will personally be avoiding spinach. My friends whole family became sick from it w / ecoli

and I got sick from Salmonella so no spinach !

I may be wrong, but there was a whole thing about spinach because there was a contaminated batch.

Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it. I got food poisoning from Taco Bell once and unfortunately, that is not enough for me to stay away!

you are right the spinach was recalled bc of salmonella. oh I wound up in the ER it was really terrible. no spinach! now taco bell is just very necessary Chat Icon Chat Icon

As for Listeria, this is a very rare disease and most practices are going to tell you to stay away from foods because of malpractice lawsuits. If you eat fresh then your risk is miniscule. And you can catch Listeria from anything, including veggies!

I agree with you...but my close friends cousin just lost her baby at around 19 weeks to listeria (she had cold cuts). I also thought it was rare, but knowing it really happened to a family member of someone close to me, made me realize that for 9 months I can be extra careful. So if I eat it now I def make sure they are heated upChat Icon
ETA: The only cold cuts I have had since becoming pregnant is pastrami (had it twice so far) and it was heated up, b/c I was still nervous to eat cold cuts LOL

ITA, I also know a friend that lost a baby due to listeria in cold cuts. I also think that maybe we shouldn't be telling other women what to eat and what not to eat or make them feel bad that they are being careful. I know what I am comfortable eating and I follow my doctors recommendations - not LIF posts. I only say this bc I have seen ALOT of people on here tell other women that "everything is ok" and that they shouldn't worry about things like cold cuts, fresh mozz, etc. Well, I would never tell anyone that. Like I said, I have a friend that lost a pregnacy due to ONE cold cut sandwich and in the 8 months I have been pregnant I have been to three resturants that told me their fresh mozz was NOT pasturized - one that the blue cheese wasn't and two that their feta was not. I still eat theses cheeses but only if I know FOR SURE they are pasturized. 90% of them are, but I would never tell a pregnant women not to worry or double check. JMO.

to be honest it isnt as rare as you think.... i used to work in a hospital and we had cases on a decent basis... to me it isnt worth the risk to have cold cuts... i can easily have something else... i prefer to not have the mentality if something goes wrong that "maybe it was that sandwich i had" when it is just as easily avoided

I don't think one person on here TOLD someone what to eat or what not to eat. Of course, go by whatever your doctor says, always but for the most part, most women on here were simply just stating that everything in moderation to them is fine as long as they are aware it's pasturized..etc... I personally eat cold cuts but mine are always heated up. Everyone will make their own decisions but I wouldn't take this post as anyone telling others what they should or should not do and i think most women will make their own judgement calls.

I think LBs original post was very helpful to all.

my point is, there is an inherent risk in eating ANYTHING. so why cross of sushi when chicken is more likely to make you sick? or why eat Taco Bell which just recently had a scare. or Jack in the Box. or any of the hundreds of restaurants/farms/food businesses that have had contamination?

It's not that people shouldn't be careful or vigilant. it's that it gets taken to an extreme, and sometimes the worry is not warranted and would be better served someplace else.

of course there will be cases of listeria. e-colo. salmonella. of course there will be tragedies. but the REAL risk must always be weighed.

no one is suggesting you go off and wash down some raw hamburger meat with some unpasteurized milk....but what we are suggesting is a less frenzied, more realistic approach that is prompted by knowlege NOT fear.

that is why I said it's so unfair to pregnant women. there are SO MANY things that go in to creating life. it seems like we have been almost programmed to think that its OUR fault when babies miscarry, have problems, or fail to thrive and it also seems like we have channeled those fears into a culprit we think we can control: food.

but that is NOT the case. you can follow every rule in the book and still lose your baby. still have your baby born with disabilities and disadvantages, sickness, and chronic disease.

I think it's unfair that the blame and onus for this are placed on our shoulders as the vessels our children grow in. we have enough to worry about without some book making us crazy with fear.

and of course things that have touched you personally will ring true more than others. I've had 3 cousins die of SIDS so I am REALLY a nut about that...but I realize that it's more my fear and paranoia than any elevated risk...and I try to let that keep me in check.

ITA with Jess.

and if someone is really, truly concerned, like in the case of listeria, then they should be asking their OB, not us.

by saying "we are suggestng", who are you referring to? Bc I guess my original point I was trying to make is that 'we' - just random strangers on a pregnany website, lol - probably shouldn't be giving that kind of advice to others/ But again, that's just my opinion.

Just for the record. NO ONE... said to go against what there doctor has said. My point is..things like Cheesecake and forzen yogurt...these arent' even the "typical" scary foods and women are asking about them. This proves the panic of women regarding food.

I don't think anyone is telling people to go against what their doctors have told them!

I honestly think it's crazy that people would trust LIF members over doctors with years of experience and a medical degree!

I think that all people are saying is that things like listeria and salmonella are risks for EVERYONE - not just people who are pregnant. So it makes sense to use caution, but the same caution you'd use when not pregnant - KWIM?

I agree. My doctor actually told me I could eat cold cuts as long as it is a well known brand, but I've chosen not to. Not worth the risk after the many years it took for me to get pg!

I agree! and I am not saying anyone is or has said "oh don't listen to your doctor" - bc NO ONE has. But there have been past posts where someone will ask about a certain food that is on the 'do not eat' list from the doctor and people respond with their own personal opinions on how everything is fine or that those items are all perfectly safe, KWIM??

JMO.

Just to clarify, NO ONE at all said what is okay and what is not. This thread simply quoted what the guidelines are for pregnancy, and as LB stated, we all have to take whatever precautions we feel necessary. If you don't feel comfortable eating cold cuts and soft cheeses, that is your call and no one here is saying you are being silly.

But if someone is coming on here with questions about whether something is safe to eat naturally, we are all going to answer with what we do. If someone doesn't feel we should give our opinions, they should either ask their OB or just ignore the thread. What is good for one doesn't work for the other-KWIM?

And I am deeply sorry about your friend.

I agree! and I am not saying anyone is or has said "oh don't listen to your doctor" - bc NO ONE has. But there have been past posts where someone will ask about a certain food that is on the 'do not eat' list from the doctor and people respond with their own personal opinions on how everything is fine or that those items are all perfectly safe, KWIM??

Well if someone is asking a question like that on the boards, then they are LOOKING for personal opinions on what is okay/not okay - right?

Also, every doctor is different. My doctor might be okay with something and someone else's doctor has it on the "do not eat" list. But if someone is posting about it on the boards... then I take that to mean that they are looking for opinions outside of what their doctor has said - for whatever reason. And in response, I might give me own opinion or the opinion of my doctor.

I know for me... I posted about sushi. I actually hadn't asked my doctor about it - but I really was just looking for someone to tell me it was okay Chat Icon

This is sooo true. With my 1st pg my OB had a whole list of foods I should not eat.

I had to change dr's this time around and my new OB is very lenient on what I can and cannot eat. And as Kate said...I still at 19 1/2 weeks have M/S and he has said to eat whatever I can keep down.

I think everyone has to make their own decision as to what is ok with them personally....with the help from your OB.

I also thought it was rare, but knowing it really happened to someone close to me family member, made me realize that for 9 months I can be extra careful. So if I eat it now I def make sure they are heated upChat Icon

JMO.

I never told people what to eat or what not to eat. I simply stated a fact that most diary in GROCERY stores are pasteurized, you can catch listeria from pretty much anything and that if you eat FRESH foods your risk is minimal. These are facts. Everyone needs to eat whatever makes them feel comfortable, trust your doctor, but I also recommend doing your own research.

For me, personally, I don't eat any fast food, food with preservatives, I eat organic etc. I have spent years researching food and nutrition so I know what I feel comfortable consuming, pregnant or not. And quite frankly I see pregnant women consume food much worse for them then a piece of salami all because of the "list".

P.S. I have nothing against people who eat fast food just to make sure that is clear so my words are not taken the wrong way again.

ETA: The only cold cuts I have had since becoming pregnant is pastrami (had it twice so far) and it was heated up, b/c I was still nervous to eat cold cuts LOL

I'm so sorry for her and her baby. Chat Icon
I have NOT and will NOT eat cold cuts for my entire pregnancy and will stick to what my doctor says to eat/not eat. Its just not worth the risk to me.

ITA this is so sad Chat Icon

I never eat coldcuts during pregnancy
