Re: Food From China
I also avoid food from China. Especially after the melamine issue.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Chinese_milk_scandal
Or the dog food or treats tainted with melamine, that so many dogs got sick or died from.

Posted by BaysideForever Peanuts harvested in the United States but sent to China for roasting wouldn’t require a mention on the label because the item doesn’t change into a different product, Scott said.
The distinction there is crazy, but also, do peanuts really have to go all the way to China to be roasted?
I also find it strange that apple juice comes form other countries, when we grow so many apples here.
Yeah I was going to say, wouldn't that cost MORE to send them all the way to China to be roasted when we can just roast them here?

LOL thats why I didn't open it. hahaha figured it would make me hungry.
Ironically, we take our ice cream serious here. Blue Bell all the way! But they had some issues with folks dying from a mishap in their factories (US factories) can't remember the bacteria name. They shut all the factories down, pulled all the product. I am patiently waiting for it to come back so I can get some Neapolitan. yum.
should be just in time for summer heat

Food From China
You can call the individual companies and ask specifically where the food is grown and where it is processed. If the company will not readily answer your questions you have your answer--avoid the product.

Food From China
I also am very careful about eating nothing from China. I don't buy fish or shrimp unless it's Gulf Shrimp. I freeze fish we catch in Montauk or Rhode Island.
Here's a tip: many of the fresh garlic bulbs in our stores are from China. I contacted King Kullen recently because they literally don't sell fresh garlic not grown in China.

Ugh. I didn't know about the garlic until the day before I posted this thread! I was clueless, and like I said... there is no place for it to be labeled so how am I supposed to know? I feel the resources for finding these things out is lacking. I go through like 4 whole heads of garlic a week! I am disgusted by how much garlic from China I have been eating!! So do you get yours in a bag that specifically says something else? I mean how do you know otherwise?

Re: Food From China
Honestly, while I know China has disgusting practices, I'm going to say that the U.S. Is not that much better. Talk to anybody who works for the FDA in food inspection, they will tell you how vile food practices are. I have a family member who worked for drug inspection and when they offered a huge raise to go over to food, he automatically declined because he knew he would never be able to eat again if he witnessed what happens on a daily basis. He now no longer eats meat or fish and steers clear of many other brands and products. It's a friggen shame, and while I do understand avoiding products from China, I do the same, I wouldn't not buy garlic or juice 1 time because you can't find an alternative, because the alternative probably isn't that much better.

Re: Food From China
I just don't understand how this is allowed. Why do we continue to import goods from China if they are laced with chemicals and poor quality? If we are shopping in an American supermarket, we should be able to feel confident the food we are buying is safe. It's bad enough I always need to look at expiration dates at Stop n Shop, but Now I need to look at where everything is coming from too? Ugh it makes me not want to eat.

The answer is simple....Cost. Most people not all do not want to pay more. There are not enough people demanding the change to make it worth while for the larger companies.

Re: Food From China
I was buying Juicy juice and Mott's apple juice - whatever was on sale. I noticed a week or two ago that Juicy juice said it uses juice from China. I am no longer buying it, Motts is made in the US.
For those who say the US is not much better, I can't believe that. We have our problems, but from things I have read, the only reason factories over there are regulated at all is because the foreign countries demand it, not because they care about their own people.

Not true. I was on the phone with Motts yesterday. They claim all their applesauce is from New York State entirely. They said that their juice IS FROM CHINA! That came from the mouth of Motts customer service.

Yes. All I know is that they confirmed the applesauce is all USA (NY specifically) but that the juice comes from China. Apple & Eve regular apple juice is a mix, although they couldn't answer my questions about the fruitables apple-carrot that says nothing on the packaging. That was bizarre. Customer service called me back but got my voicemail and didn't leave a message. As I've posted before, what it is labeled and what it actually is could be wrong. They don't have to disclose it usually.
