Flying with infant
Talk me down a bit - We are going to GA for Thanksgiving. DS will be 6 months. I joined a car seat group on FB for tips on what seat to get for him and I'm totally freaked out now that I didn't buy him a seat! They post all these articles about how dangerous it is for a child of any age to be held during a flight and that he should be in a car seat.
I don't mind spending the money, but at this point it would be like $600 to buy him a ticket.
WWYD??
ETA - I mean buying him his own plane ticket

Im not buying a seat just for a plane ride. There are specific seats that are acceptable. I held her to Wisconsin in Sept (7mos) and i will again in Nov to Vegas (9.5mos). I dont think they would offer to have a lap child if it was dangerous. That would be an enormous liability for an airline im sure!

I flew internationally with DS on my lap at 5 months. I did read some comments about babies being safest when properly restrained in a car seat vs. a lap baby. But babies fly on their parents lap everyday. We made it back perfectly fine with him on our laps.

we had no problems at all. many people fly with lap babies....stop reading the fb page

I've flown with dd as a lap child twice - once when she was 13 months, and then just recently at 16 months. Like Ang said - I don't think they would allow it if it were that unsafe. What exactly are they saying is the danger?
Honestly, at 6 months, your baby is going to want to be in your lap whether you buy a seat for him or not. At 16 months, I kind of wish I had bought her own seat because she is mobile now and it was VERY hard to fly with her on my lap this time around.

I'm in the same group and couldn't believe how many people were anti-lap baby. If we travel after the baby is born up until it is 2 years old, it will be in my lap no matter what that group says. You would also need to get a specific seat if the one you have is not FAA approved. The only thing I wouldn't do re: a baby/child and flying is check in a carseat.

its like googling while pregnant - you expect all these terrible things to happen
we were not renting a car so we gate checked our car seat. if you are visiting family you can ask them to pick up a car seat for you from a rental place (not necessarily a car rental place but there are companies out there that rent baby items - although not sure how abundant they are in GA)
IMO though, getting it through a rental company you still never know how good the seat is and if its been in an accident or not...which is why we just took our own

I am flying with dd in a couple of weeks as a lap infant at 4mo. We are also renting a car, but I'm bringing my own car seat and gate checking it with the snap and go. I'd rather know I trust her car seat and don't know what I would get from the car company. Plus they cannot guarantee it, only as a request.
I would not buy a seat for her this young. She's going to best while held anyway.

you don't. But it is the lesser of two evils in my opinion. I would trust that more than what I would get from a car rental company.

The seats get put in the exact same spot in the plane when they are gate checked as when you check them out front.
The only difference is the amount of time it is out of your eyesight. One they take it from you its put on a belt that takes it until its loaded on a cart then loaded on the plane. Gate checked its left at the end of the jetway taken downstairs and put on the belt to be loaded on the plane.

I flew when my DD was 4 months and 15 months and did not buy her a seat. When she was 4 months, I gate checked the Car Seat, Snap & Go and Car Seat Base. I had no issues.
When she was 15 months, I rented a convertible car seat from the car rental place.

I'm thinking of just shipping a cheaper car seat, like a Cosco to my mil's and having her install it before she picks us up. Then I'll just leave it in GA for the next time (if there is one   )

when she was 4 months did you use the car seat and snap and go as your only stroller? I called jet blue this mrng and they said it wouldnt be a problem if I also check an umbrella stroller (it has a much bigger sun canopy and we are going to FL)

When DS was 5 months I flew with the Britax stroller and car seat (only the stroller frame) I gate checked both and bought the bags from BRU to protect them. I'm glad I did b/c the stroller bag was ripped; which would make me think my stroller would have taken more damage had it not been in the bag.

DS has been to ireland 5 times at 18 months an DD 2 times at 5 months and they were always lap infants. i will pay when i have to.

I flew with both boys multiple times as lap infants. I did get DS a seat on a flight we took when he was 21 months since it was on Spirit and the legroom is tight.
We have both gate checked and regular checked carseats and had no issues. We did use the protective gate check bags though to keep them clean (they are like a big laundry bag). I've also gate checked my Snap N Go, Maclaren and City Mini double with no issues (the Maclaren in a gate check bag and the City Mini in the City Mini bag).
If you do plan on going back though occasionally, it might be a smart move to get the Scenera to have at your destination - one less thing to lug with you at the airport. I have many friends who do that and are happy with it (for the price).
You can install infant seats without the base - one less thing to worry about.

we flew when dd was under 2, she was more than fine on our laps.
we will be flying next year when our next dd is 4 mos and will be keeping her on our lap.
