Flying with a 1YO?

What do I need to know? I see some airlines recommend a car seat but what if they are too big for the 'carrier' car seats? If you didn't bring a car seat and flew somewhere that you needed to rent a car - how did that work? Any/all info welcome, I'm clueless! LoL TIA!

I recommend bringing the car seat on the plane if you are buying a seat for your db. I brought on the Britax Marathon. Dd was comfortable in it and she sat nicely for a while since she is used to it. If you don't want to bring it onto the plane but still bring the car seat you can check it at the gate.

If you don't bring it, you can rent a car seat with rental co. but when I did that last time the car seat was gross and not a brand I recognized. I used it anyway but I wasn't thrilled.

For on the plane - I recommend lots of snacks and a new toy she doesn't already have. And if she is a tv watcher, download movies and shows on the iPad. Good luck!!

We flew with dd at 17months and took her car seat so we could use it in the car when we got there. We bought her a seat and we used it on the plane. We have the britax advocate which is huge! We put her by the window and we had the rest of the row to ourselves. It worked out great and she slept the whole way in it and we got to move about and be more comfortable.

We flew jet blue extra leg room. I will say that delta would not let my friend bring her car seat on (also britax advocate) so make sure you check ahead of time. Or you can check it.

Flying with a 1YO?

Flew with my car seat last year. Didn't have a seat for DS so I had to gate check it. I needed it at out destination since I waa renting a car but heard too many horror stories about renting a seat.

On the plane, bring snacks, new toys to play with, ipad/tablet full charged. I charged mine but must have forgotten to turn it off, the battery was completely dead when I tried to give it to DS on the plane! !

I have flown with ds since he was 4 months. We fly 2-3 times a year. We have never used a car seat on the plane and honestly I have never seen anyone use one. But if you want to you just need to make sure it is faa approved and then check the dimensions fit in the seat.

I have checked my seat a few times and also rented a seat. The seat I rented was clean and looked like new.

As for the flight- snacks and toys. I bring my iPad with movies and we try to fly jet blue since the have the tvs.

We flew Jet Blue and booked aisle window. We took the risk of someome booking in the middle...which there was. However, we paid to upgrade her seat to the even more space seat and BAM DD had her own seat! Carseats must be used next the window. If this didn't workout we would've gate checked her seat. It was a pain to lug all around but we let her run and put the carseat in the stroller.

We've flown many times with our kids and we brought our car seat with us for our DS from his 1st flight at 7 months through age 3.5. Our next flight at age 4 we sat him in the seat without a car seat. We always purchased a seat (even when he could be a lap child) bc we felt it was much safer and having him in his car seat made flying easy! We have always seen several car seats on planes. More and more people use car seats on planes for the safety and comfort of their children, and the sanity of having them strapped in! We have a younger DS2 and he too flies in his car seat. His 1st fight was at 8 months and he flew 5-6 times between 8 and 12 months. Wait, he flew as a lap child once during that time frame bc we moved and he outgrew our extra seat and the other stayed in NY and never again!

Get a seat for kid.
Convertible car seats are airplane compliant (they have a tag on them).
Seat should be window (they won't let them in aisle).
I haven't been on a flight that had s spare seat in years. Maybe if you fly on Wednesday, so don't count on it!
Get a car seat tote from a friend. They are $$$ but worth it!
I started to fly without one... But at an older age (2.5).

we gate checked his seat so that we were able to use it in the rental car. Was only an 1.5 hour flight though but he slept through most of it.

How do car seats work on a plane? Do you use the latches or the seatbelt?
I might be flying with DD and would like to use her car seat.

You just thread the seatbelt on the plane like you would if the car didn't have latch.

If you purchased a ticket for your child airlines are NOT allowed to deny you useage of your car seat.

As a tech I suggest printing out and having the FAA regulations with you when you board the flight. Some flight attendants are clueless when it comes to what is and isn't allowed.

What car seat do you have for everyday use? There are lower budget seats that are light that you could purchase to use on the plane and vacation.

Just as an FYI, you can install a car seat rear facing on an airplane. The flight attendant insisted that we couldn't, but we found that was not true...its a misinterpretation of the faa guidelines and many flight attendants don't know the rule.
