flu shots

Are you getting one for your DC? I called my dr's office and they said that there's contain a small amount of thermisol in it. Is that a reason to be concerned? Did anyone's DC get sick after getting the shot?

Re: flu shots

Yes, I am definitely getting my dd the flu shot...I am not concerned about the minimal amount of thermisol (well I am concerned but not enough to not get the shot, KWIM?)

Re: flu shots

Julia has been getting the flu shot since she was 6 months old, never had any reactions to it, its a dead virus! I feel its better for them to get it, the flu can be deadly to kids and infants.

Re: flu shots

I haggle with the idea. One day...I'm planning to give it...the next day I am not. I am really concerned about the Thermisol. I know it's just a little but whose to say that my DD wouldn't be the one affected by it?! Not sure what to do.......Chat Icon

Re: flu shots

We're getting it for both DC. The flu is a known, documented killer. We don't want to risk it with DC. Even if DC would never die from it, I don't want to subject them to the effects of the flu.

I could have written this word for word...
Mommies who do give it, tell us why?
Totally curious. I am on the fence and am having trouble weighing the pros and cons...Thanks!

My DD got her flu shot on 9/27, she goes back in a month for her 2nd part. I was a little worried about a reaction, but she seems fine. SHe did have a fever the next day though, but I think it might have been from the 2 other shots she got that day.

I give it because the flu can be very serious and potentially fatal to babies and young children (and the elderly). I got the flu ONCE when I was in my 20s and it was so awful that I swore I would do whatever I could to avoid getting it again. I get the flu shot every year (I work in health care) and so will my daughter. DH doesn't really fit into the high-risk group so he doesn't get it, although I wish he did.

The flu is a documented, known killer... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/01/07/health/main535605.shtml
"influenza now claims more lives each year than AIDS, researchers say. "
The U.S. death toll surged fourfold from 16,263 in 1976-77 to 64,684 in 1998-99, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Flu deaths now average about 36,000 a year, up from 20,000 in previous estimates, the CDC said.

Those who get the flu and don't die have an absolutely horrible experience. I've had the flu before, and I will do whatever I can to not get it again, and especially not to let my DC get it.

I don't want to be a statistic.... Chat Icon

I was on the fence too- I didn't want to give it, but then talked to my doc for a good 20 minutes about it.... the benefits definitely outweigh the risks so we did it, and DD really didn't have much of a reaction- just a little tired day of shot.

I agree that the benefits CLEARLY outweigh the risks. I am going to call my doctor and see when he will be getting the flu vaccine.
