First birthday vent

Dh and I are hosting a small first bday party for DD next weekend at our house. We only invited family and I sent the invites out at least a month ago. Well my BIL has decided he can't come because of a wedding (which I suspect is at night and my party is at 2), My Dh's grandma said she isn't coming because and I quote..."I can't come because I am hoping to die before then"...she is 90 but not ill! Then his aunt, uncle and cousins just RSVP'd no yesterday because his aunt has a bridal shower. His aunt said to me,"Isabella is only 1 and won't remember if I am there, but my friends will remember if I skip the shower". I don't believe there is a shower either, I know that sounds awful. I also don't know why the uncle and cousin can't come just because the aunt has a shower...

So only my MIL will be here from Dh's side. Keep in mind I have a small family too, so I just feel like DD is being short changed. I just feel so bad that everything else seems more important than my DD's party. Chat Icon

Wow. Bunch of misery bags. You're better off without them there.

Sorry, I know it sucks when you have family that doesn't care.

I'm so sorry. Honestly in my life I have relied on my friends so much more than family for this very reason, family can be so disappointing sometimes.

Isabella with have a special birthday regardless of who is there, just remember that!

Re: First birthday vent

Thank you so much ladies! I know my friends are truly "family" to me. Our family has been disappointing us for years. You think I would be used to it by now. I guess I was fine with it when it was about me and Dh, but when it is something special for DD it really hurts. We will still have a nice time, I guess I just really needed to vent a bit. Re: First birthday vent

i've had similar with my family too. my dd was seriously hurt last week. he hasn't called or come over to see her (she's only 10 months old) but you would think he might be concerned. well, he relies on the updates from my mom (they are married) but she has been away for the past 8 days. and she told him he should call or visit. but he said he was too busy with work stuff. meanwhile he can drop everything if my 1/2 brother shows up (which he did this past weekend) and he can drop everything to go pay condolence calls to people he knows from work. but he can't take any time to see his own granddaughter. its awful and pathetic, and they will never get it. i'm sorry you had to deal with this.

They weren't always this way. But my MIL has had a few falling outs with her family, I think they aren't coming because she will be there. This past year they blew off when DD was born, all holidays, her christening and now this!

I had some rude comments said to me too from extended family regarding my dds 1st birthday. Im at the point were if someone doesnt want to be there then dont be there.. the people who truley care about my dd will be there and those are the ones i want there.
