These articles are so ridiculous. Who cares what other people do. Live and let live. Parent how you want to parent. Stop worrying about what others do. I see these silly stories, which are really bashes on other people's parenting choices, every single day. It gets so old.

And for the record, I HANDmake my child a bunch of new things every single time we go to Disney or on their cruise, and am very proud of that ;)

I don't see the article as a bash on other's parenting choices. I can completely relate to the author, as my childhood was very similar, it seems, to hers. It brings me back to a simpler time. It's easy to get caught up these days, with Pinterest, etc, and feel like what you're doing is just not enough. I struggle with the mundane tasks of everyday life, I don't need the added pressure! If you truly enjoy doing the artsy craftsy stuff, then I say more power to you. Sometimes it feels like some people do those types of things not for their kids though, and not for themselves either- but to compete with other moms.

I agree with this, your child your parenting ways. It is no one else's business. My mom was at all my events growing up and I was in a million activities and I turned out perfectly fine

I am not judging anyone. I guess I just miss the simpler times I grew up in and wish my kids were having a childhood like mine. I did not one single mommy & me class or activity until I started ballet in Kindergarten and I think I started soccer in 1st grade. We did one 1 week long vacation every July and that was it for the year. My mom made my Halloween costumes the first few years but then quickly realized going to Toys R Us to purchase one was much easier. Birthday parties were more like playdates where kids ran wild and had some cake on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. No dessert bars, fancy favors, or overpriced entertainment. And we all loved it and had so much fun anyway. I am not at all judging people who do go all out. Please know that. What I am saying is now it is so hard to give your kids a simple childhood, and while I am certainly not an over the top mom, there are some things I am going to have to do simply so my kids don't feel completely left out. I mean, a simple trip to Disney World is like planning for a 6 month long backpacking trip through Europe. Getting up at 5 AM to reserve your spot to eat breakfast with Cinderella? My girls will never have that experience because when we bring them to Disney we will eat wherever there is room for us to sit and have overpriced theme park food. I just miss simpler times. No judging.

Finally- I found a mother just like me

You can give your children a simple childhood- how you raise your children is your choice. You also choose the people you surround yourself with and have the choice to set the norm in your children's world. I am not sure how old you are BUT one of
The reason's I did not attend mommy and me classes with my
Mom was there simply were NO mommy and me classes offered in Queens in the late 70's. As for parents being involved in their children's activities that is a personal choice- in all of my years growing up my father never attended one school activity with the exception of graduations but my mom was at every single activity- she was president of the PTA and was involved in many aspects of the elementary school and religious education program I attended- 30+ years later she is still involved in the same religious education program and her children are all adults- I had friends that went on multiple vacations a year yet we only
took one vacation a year and it was usually a road trip. As the parent you shape if your child has a "simple childhood" or not--also keep in mind what is the norm on LI is NOT the norm for most of the US.

Re: Finally- I found a mother just like me

I get where she's coming form and agree with a lot of it -

I just find it strange though, that it all stemmed from her annoyance that a woman MADE her daughter a dress.
I actually think that's kind of an amazing thing to do for your kid and something they WILL remember. If she bought the super delux $400 Disney Princess dress I could see the argument, but I'm not understanding why taking the time to make your daughter a princess dress is a bad thing for a Mom to do ........Chat Icon

My Mom made costumes for my sister and I, she's good at that stuff !
My Grandma was a seamstress, and my Grandpa a tailor - My Mom to this day will tell you how spoiled she was, that my Grandma stayed up all night getting her dress for a dance, or date or whatever perfect. She didn't appreciate her efforts then, but what kid does? She absolutely appreciated it once she was older and understood the time and effort though -

There will NEVER be a simplier childhood like we used to experience in the 70's and 80's no matter how much anyone will say it can be.

Exactly and our parents will tell you that the 70s and 80s childhoods were more complicated than their 50s and 60s childhoods.
It's all a sign of things getting more and more complicated as time goes on

I'm not a parent yet but articles like this remind me why I will never fit in with other moms. Not because I will or will not do any of these things but because I give zero effs what anyone else does with their kid and I'll cut the first person who has something to say about how I raise mine.

Except Disney, I'm never going to Disney.

She had another one that was bashing what people post on facebook, and I just connected that it came from the same person. She just seems downright miserable, and by putting others down is trying to make herself feel more secure in her own parenting choices.

I don't think life is complicated. You make it how complicated you want it to be. I'm crafty, I'm involved, I attend every event, help at school, make fancy things, have great parties. On the flip side, we are perfectly fine playing with a cardboard box all day Chat Icon. Just because you (or she) is different doesn't mean it's okay to be condescending about my (or anyone else's choices ;) And really, that's all these "rantings" are...backhanded bashes on other people's choices ;)

I agree. I find that I can't relate to a lot of those mommy articles, but that's ok, because everyone is different. It's not a competition. I do like making fun foods for my DD, I love school events, I try to find crafts and fun things for my child to do...because I like to do it. I don't feel pressured to do it. There's a difference. Some people just take things too personally and put the competion on themselves.

I never heard my mom or dad saying that though. She knows how much easier it was then, then it is today to raise kids but never heard that it was harder than when she was younger.

Yes, I know you do, as I read a lot of your posts on here. I have no secret, I just live and let live, and don't let what other people do get to me. I know you have an issue with that, because I read a lot of your posts. My advice, let it go, and worry about YOU. There is a thin line with that as you can't go through life just being so lax and no motivation to do more and want more.
