Fellow cruise lovers...
What do we all think about the stranded carnival ship? Does this change your opinion on future cruising?
I'm not sure just how bad the conditions are on the ship, but wow... What a way to end a vacation... The latest I've heard, passengers have had to poop in bags... I'm sure they never thought they'd wind up camping on this cruise
And carnival offering a free future cruise... I doubt I'd ever be sailing with them ever again...

Re: Fellow cruise lovers...
I'm not a cruise lover. But I have cruised a handful of times. I may or may not cruise again, but that decision will have nothing to do with this stranded ship. Things happen. Do I feel bad or the people on the ship? Certainly. Do I think it's likely to happen again any time soon? Probably not.

Re: Fellow cruise lovers...
I feel like Carnival has really gone down hill as the last two major accidents both involved Carnival cruise lines (this one and the one in Italy as they were the parent co.). So I would not take a cruise with them specifically - although I always felt they had a perception problem.
Also, for us personally, we took an NCL cruise in 2010 and the service/food had gone down immensely - it was my 3rd cruise and some family members 8th cruise with them. We have not gone on a cruise since then. I will say that I would still go on a cruise, but I would go on a more luxurious line (Royal, Cunard, Holland, Celebrity, Princess, even Disney). While the moderately priced lines are attractive for their prices, I feel that the quality has declined to a point where I am no longer satisfied with their product and I would rather spend a little bit more for my safety/comfort.

Fellow cruise lovers...
I feel horrible for all of those on board. I don't get how it is taking so long to get them to port and how unsanitary the conditions are. I was reading up on it yesterday and I can't imagine. I don't think a refund and one free cruise is enough compensation!
This wouldn't change my thoughts about cruising though - but, I would probably stay away from Carnival since this isn't the first incident of this nature they have had over the past few years - a cruise leaving CA had a fire and they were stranded as well (not that I was ever thinking of cruising them - I've only cruised RCCL).

This to a tee. I have never heard good things about Carnival and they always seem to be having problems. The thought of a free cruise would nto be appealing at all after this experience. People are sleeping on deck because of the heat inside and the smells. Uggh. I'm skeeved just thinking about it. I've also only cruised RCCL and will upgrade to Celebrity because my last two experiences on RCCL were not as expected compared to previous sailings.

Fellow cruise lovers...
Sad to heard that you guys feel other cruise lines have gone downhill as well... I was never a huge fan of ncl's food... And rccl I haven't sailed on in 10 yrs but I remember the food and service being awesome back then.
Cruising is one vacation that I absolutely love but I also can't see myself spending a small fortune to sail on the "higher" class ships. I have my first all inclusive planned for may and its going to be interesting to see how this compares...

Cunard, holland, princess, seaborn, and coasta are all owned by the same parent company as carnival.
Honestly this is not the 1st time something like this has happened and has happened on other lines too.
I have never sailed on Carnival bc it is not a line I am interested in.
Unfortunately a ship is very isolated, not like a resort you just leave if they have a problem. Fire can take out all amenitites. Things happen but how the company handles things is important. But honestly I don't expect much from carnival. Interesting that the company is saying certain things are being provided while some arevsaying not true. Too bad they couldn't find a way to get the passengers off rather than making them stay on for a few days in those conditions.

Re: Fellow cruise lovers...
Ok so then that leaves Royal, Celebrity and Disney that are not owned by them then? I just feel like every time you hear of a cruise disaster it involves the least expensive options. But you are right, with a land based vacation you have other options. I for one would have used travel insurance and requested a helicopter out of there ASAP. FWIW though when I was a young child we were at a ski resort and the entire place burned to the ground. It was really scary.

Re: Fellow cruise lovers...
I am a huge cruise lover. Yes this scares me but I can't live my life in fear.
I have never gone on carnival because its not a line I am interested in. I also only go on new ships, I have been on older ships before and they tend to have a lot more problems.
I will 100% go on another cruise just not on carnival
I was on an Oceania cruise 2 months ago and it was amazing!! Small ship, exciting ports of call.

I feel terrible they all had that experience but it doesnt change my opinion of cruising. Things can happen that are unexpected.

Re: Fellow cruise lovers...
Honestly... it just made me even more excited for my cruise in August
Ship happens. It can and has happened on many cruise lines, not just those owned by Carnival Corp. I've been on 6 fabulous Carnival cruises and wouldn't hesitate to cruise with them again.
I'm going on NCL this time around (Dad is paying so he got to choose which line and where to go, which is of course, fine by me).
Like I said, Ship Happens!

I can't figure out why they didn't tender the guests off of the ship to the other carnival ship that 'came by' to drop off food. Pick up those people, high tail it back to port at 26 knots and drop them off.
I guess they dont want to pay for ruining two ship's cruises and instead will have really bad conditions for just one.

The only thing I can think of some sort of maritime law that wouldn't allow it since it wasn't sinking or currently under fire. But I can only imagine the hygene/health concerns that go with not having working toilets and bags during norwalk season. No thanks.

TWO other ships came to deliver food and water. Really, 3,000 passengers couldn't be divided amongst the two ships and taken to the nearest port. But I guess it would cost too much for the inconvenience of the passengers of the other ships.
I read in the Times that people are getting sick from the smells and the heat and puking everywhere. Between that and the non-working toilets, that creates a huge health issue. My opinion, jeopardizing my health that way would cost more than a refund and a free cruise.

I don't understand it either, they were near mexico - why not doc there? I understand that there were passengers without passports, the few who that applied to could have been sent on other ships and they could have chartered a flight for the other passengers back to the US. To me this is way more than an inconvenience.

As the the tugboats were on their way, the ship ended up drifting with the current towards the US. They were then equidistant between Alabama and Mexico so logically it made sense to tug the ship to Alabama. The original plan, however, was to go to Progreso Mexico.
ETA: The incident happened when they were 150 miles from Mexico.

How would they get the passengers from one boat onto another in the middle of the gulf? According to the USCG, it's safer to leave them on a non-functioning yet non-sinking ship than the dangerous act of transporting passengers in between ships.

I was thinking a tender, or even the lifeboats, just like they do at many cruise ports.

This is why I always pay for the upgraded trip insurance. I would have been on a helicopter out of there instantly. The extra $100 peace of mind is so worth it to me.

Hmm. They do it to the private islands right in the Atlantic ocean (CoCo Cay, etc) and to Grand Cayman - they seem to be more open to the ocean then someting in the area between Florida and Mexico would be. At least there it's protected by 3 sides.

I couldn't believe this. Raw sewage running down the walls of their cabins?!
Still, this is one of THOUSANDS of cruises. I'd still go again, and I'd still take the free cruise if I was handed one, even by Carnival.
Why didn't they try to evacuate them on the lifeboats?
ETA: Would the travel insurance really provide you with a helicopter out of there???
