Trying to sleep and all I have heard for a couple of hours is loud music/loud bass. Thumping. Vibrating. Annoying.

It's not a next door neighbor, but its loud enough to be heard throughout my house. I sent DH to drive around, and he found the house - a party of teens all milling around, at the end of our block.

I can't believe how far they are, but how loud it is where I am!

I tried putting on the fan in my master bathroom, and having it drown it out, but no luck.

.....I made DH call the cops.

I don't get why it's been this loud for this long.....aren't the other neighbors complaining???

and no, I wouldn't trust going up to them and asking them nicely to turn it down...not in this day and age.

Hell, yeah!!!

The question is, will the cops care? They are pretty darn lazy in my 'hood, I think gun shots need to be heard for then to show up... and let's face it, when does THAT happen in nice middle class neighborhoods of Queens???Chat IconChat Icon Although I personally have been having some very strong urges due to people across the street throwing crazy parties at all kind of crazy hours...Chat Icon

That's the thing..I hope they do. I never have called the coppers before for anything other than a car accident.

It is sooooooooooooo loud. I have no idea how the neighbors of the house are not seething right now.

It sounds like one of those teen cars you sit next to in traffic, with the bass thumping so loud, your car is shaking.

My eye is twitching over this.

I feel like an old fart, but I have to get up early tomorrow...like 5 AM earlyChat Icon

Re: Feeling like a jerk..but it had to be done. Would you have done same?

OOF! So tough! You try to be nice at first. You think about how it is as a teen/college student. You partied and didn't understand why people called the cops before 1am. Once you get a 'real' job you party til 11pm. (But only days where you have to work.) Once you become a parent, you think noise shall be kept to a minimum by 9pm. (You wake my child and YOU be the one to deal with them through the night.)

Since you are up for work at 5am, you are the oddity on a Saturday. I know it sucks. (As I work 2-3 overnights per week and DH also works overnights and wacky shifts.) But you can't be too angry over 11pm. If they keep going past 12am, then anger is fine.

As a funny story: My next door neighbor has her grandson living with her. The grandson is 21 years old. He often has friends over. Typically we don't hear them and go about our business. He came to me a few weeks ago and apologized for being loud while outside on their deck. I didn't know he was loud. He said the lights kept on flashing on OUR deck as they got loud. DS finally admitted he flashed the switch in his room for people to shut up as he was falling asleep. This was only 8:30-9pm. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

So we all have our times and point where we deal with the noise.

Re: Feeling like a jerk..but it had to be done. Would you have done same?

We have asked the neighbors to turn down music before. Only if it is really late and out of control. We have had to call the police on a house a block away 2-3 times for loud out of control parties, not just music but drunk people milling around and lots of crazy driving and screaming etc.

ETA: we always ask 1st with the exception of this one house. They do not speak english or they just ignore usChat Icon

There comes a time when we all have to call the cops on our neighbors for one thing or another.

Eh. Friday night, and you only wrote the post at 11:45. I would have waited a little. It's a holiday weekend. Would you have thought different if it was a house full of adults?

My windows were slightly vibrating. At that point, I didn't care if it was a house full of old ladies knitting and listening to Sinatra with the bass turned up. Chat Icon it sounded like they had a woofer or something.

I've been to plenty of parties that were broken up because the neighbors complained. Now it's another generations's turn to be those neighbors.

I believe the law says they can be loud until 11PM and then they have to turn it down - weekend or not. You have your rights too - I wouldn't feel bad if I were you.

windows shaking and thumping in your house that's DOWN the block??? that's a bit much honestly. Their party is DEF too loud then!! you were right to call the cops.

I live in Queens... a place where we all live and die ontop of one another.... and I've had lots of big parties... I can guarantee that my neighbor's windows weren't rattling and they weren't hearing woofing sounds either.... ESP those from down the block!!! That's just crazy!! Sorry!!!

Did the cops ever come??

my sisters neighbors had a huge party they finally called the cops after hours of listening and having them burn a huge bonfire in the backyard.
the cops never came.
thank goodness my sisters twins never woke up. it would have been worse than the music.

I would've called, too! Noise ordinances exist for a reason. I'm normally tolerant of parties, but only up to a certain point.

Re: Feeling like a jerk..but it had to be done. Would you have done same?

I think you did the right thing whether it was a holiday or not. Thats just plain out rude esp. when there are people that DO work bright and early on weekends. I use to live somewhere where it was constant loud music. We didnt call the cops because the neighbors would of clearly known it was me. However, in your situation there is no way they could possible know it was you. I also wouldnt have went up to them and asked them polity to turn down the music because for one, they are teenagersChat Icon and you dont know how they are going to react or if they have any weapons. I would have called the cops too. Hopefully they showed up.

the party was still ragin' on by 12:45, and then I fell asleep. I doubt the cops came, or even if they did, I'm sure the kids turned it back up.

I always wonder, too....when we called the non-emegency hotline, they asked us if we wanted to put our name down. We said no. DH worried that maybe it was a cop's kid or something, KWIM?

I never heard anything that loud from so far away, where it impacted my sleep. It was nuts!

For the record:

The cops DO go, they go to every call they get. Unfortunately, they have to respond to life-threatening emergencies first and you would be amazed at how many of them there. And there are only a set number of cops for a certain area (sector). But they will get there, they will always respond to a call no matter how long it takes.
99.9% of the time - cop shows up, asks people to turn down music, cop leaves, music goes back up....unless he/she finds it really unruly and has to break up the party there isn't much else he/she can do.
Lastly, those of us answering the phones are NOT keeping records for the police so they can come after you cuz you called on their son/daughter. We ask because there may be a time when you call for a real emergency and can't even talk...so we have your info and can send a cop to your house to find out whats going on if you just call up screaming or something like that at a later date.

Just so's you know Chat Icon

I would and I have many times!!! I remember a few years ago when we rented out the bottom floor of a house. The house in back of us had this massive party in their backyard. DJ, what seemed like a hundred people etc. I think I called the police every 30 minutes-1 hour because it was not stopping. We lived in an incorporated village with their own PD which was a block away so they got there right away.

Re: Feeling like a jerk..but it had to be done. Would you have done same?

I once called the cops on a party at MY HOUSE that my brother threw. I was still living at home and at the time I had a job that I had to leave the house by 6am for.

The party got out of hand, there was drinking going on (ALL underage), and I heard someone say there was about to be a fight on the front lawn. I was over 21 at the time,my parents were away and I was NOT going to be responsible for anything bad happening, as I was the only "of age"person in the house.

So, no... you weren't a jerk!

I used to live in an apartment where the guy directly below me would blast guitar hero at 3am on weekdays. My friend also lived right next door to them, and all of her stuff would vibrate--neither one of us had thin walls either! We both used to knock on his door all the time, and it was so loud that he never heard us answer. The only thing he responded to was me stomping as hard as possible on my floor. My friend finally had enough one night and called the cops. He never played music that loud again (at least not at night)!

If it was a next door neighbor, yeah, you would have been a jerk. But down the street? No. Too loud, totally inappropriate. You were right to call.
