I hope the doc is wrong. Since you said you weren't really "trying," is it possible that you conceived later than you thought?
I definitely think it could be my wacky cycles.
They range from 31-38 days - and he took that into consideration and said "hey it might just be a fluke and you had a really off cycle and O'd a lot later." But since I have the diabetes, it makes him more suspect of that being the reason.
By my estimates I should be about anywhere between 6-7.5wks - by when I had my last period and how long my cycles can be. So who knows.
Now it's just the torture of waiting. 
I have long cycles like you and with both pregnancies I went to my first ob appts at 9 weeks based on my LMP but measured 6 weeks on the sonos....I have 2 beautiful girls!!!
I hope its the same for you!
