Fave summer day trips
We're taking off a week this summer (probably in August), but since we are doing renos on our home, want to stay local and maybe do a few day trips.
What are some of your favorite places? DS is 5.
Remember, low cost is ideal .

Really?? We used to do that all the time when we were little - my brother was maybe 3/4 when we started, we both loved it. Seeing the farms. Getting pies, it was great! And almost all of the wineries are super kid friendly, we always see families picnicking there.

Lake Compounce in CT is fun. We take the PJ ferry over and it's about a 35 minute drive from there. Inexpensive, they have an amusement park, and a waterpark. Free soda (if you drink that), and just very family friendly and clean.
Also there is the Dinosaur thing in Secaucus NJ, I know they have a Living Social or Groupon deal l right now. We did that last Summer with a group of kids, and they all enjoyed it.
Oh, how about the Legoland Discovery Center in Westchester? I know there is a link floating around for free kid ticket with purchase of adult.

Re: Fave summer day trips
Not a real day trip but Adventureland is always fun for kids.
I don't know what age you need to be for the trip to be worth it but possibly Six Flags.
Montauk is popular with many people.
Mystic Ct is another option. I've never been there but I know people like it.

Fave summer day trips
I would start by checking out what museum passes your library offers and see if there's anything you would be interested in.
Other ideas would be the bronx zoo, aquarium, ocean beach, Splish Splash, LI Ducks game, Suffolk County Farm which is free.
I have to agree about the wineries. Pack a picnic lunch and some toys/activities for DC and go on a day that there's live music. Maybe go with friends with kids so DC has some entertainment.

Re: Fave summer day trips
Thanks ladies. These are some great ideas.
As for wineries, maybe we can get someone to watch DS one day so DH and I can go. We don't see that as a relaxing kid friendly trip and prefer the wineries that aren't super crowded anyway.
I like the ferry idea.
I've never been from PJ to CT.
We also thought about going to fire island for the day too so DS could ride the boat.

I love taking the ferry to FI. Either from Patchogue to Davis Park or from Sayville to Sailor's Haven! It's like a totally different relaxing world over there!
If you're looking to do more than just sit on the beach, you can take the Bayshorw ferry to Ocean Beach.
(Not the cheapest trip though, bc you have to pay to park and pay for ferry tickets).

Bike riding on shelter island. You can take the ferry from either Greenport or Sag Habor.
