I just saw the story that probably prompted your question...(haven't watched much TV recently). They said they have video of the woman going over. I wonder if it also shows someone helping her.

I have never been on a cruise, but why aren't the rails higher? Why do they not have some sort of netting? High Rise buildings have windows that don't open, but there is nothing preventing someone from jumping or throwing someone on a cruise ship. Seems silly.

They are very high. And on the high decks (like the top decks of the ship) they have glass (or plexiglass) on top of that too. I know that the balconies are up to my chest/neck in the staterooms.

I do not think it is easy to fall off. I think either it is a dare gone wrong or someone pushing someone off.

I agree. The last cruise I was on I was thinking how it would be pretty hard to just "fall" overboard. Even on the balcony of our stateroom. And I"m pretty tall too....

It's a great way to kill someone and dispose of the body. Take 'em on a cruise.

Re: Falling overboard on cruise ships

I've been on a cruise ship & I think it would be difficult to just be standing there & just suddenly slip & fall overboard. Those railings are a decent height. You would have to be climbing on the railing & leaning way over (which the signs warn not to do), be really drunk & doing something stupid, or you'd need to be pushed or jump intentionally. So, I don't think a pure innocent accident is too likely.

Um, this happened on the cruise I went on last summer...the guy was drunk and jumped overboard because he was being chased. He was trying to cut down the rescue boats off the side of the ship. Chat Icon

We heard "Man overboard, portside" over the annoucements and we freaked out. Here is an article I found:

Scott Durrin

Date: July 1, 2007

Cruise Bruise: Overboard

Bruise Location: At Sea Near Boca Raton, Florida

Age: 29

Home Town: Maryland

Cruise Line: Carnival Cruise Lines

Ship: Liberty

Details:

About 11:35pm the United States Coast Guard (USCG) rescued Durrin, after went overboard on the Carnival Liberty after 50 miles off shore from Boca Raton, only 7 hours after departing for a Caribbean cruise.

Liberty crew members threw life rings and jackets overboard after the Man Overboard (MOB) alarm was sounded. Passengers rushed to the railings when the MOB was sounded.

The USCG responded to a call for assisance and arrived on the scene with Coast Guard Cutter Bluefin, an 87-foot patrol boat based in Fort Pierce.

Apparently Durrin had been drinking onboard with three friends. They left the casino around 11pm to go outside. This where things began to wrong.

Durrin crawled into a lifeboat according to FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela.

Durrin then found an axe, and began to chop at the ropes securing the boat to to the ship. At this point, security arrived, and told Durrin to get out of the lifeboat. So he did. He jumped overboard, falling 36 feet into the dark ocean below.

At 12:22am he was located by the USCG and fished out of the water.

Petty Officer 1st Class Dana Warr of the USCG said the Coast Guard did not plan to charge Durrin for the cost of the rescue. In most instances, the agency doesn't charge people they rescue unless they're called out on a hoax, an official said.

I think it's crap. I mean really you just fall over the side. Not without help.

ITA. I was just on a cruise in Sept and there is no way you can go over without help. The rails were high enough to lean on but not to fall over.

Something isn't right with this recent story and she is from where I live in FL. The family told our local paper that she committed suicide by jumping but I don't buy it. She was also celebrating her first anniversary too. Chat Icon

I think again this was foul play. I have never been on a cruise ship. I am actually terrified but this seems odd

Re: Falling overboard on cruise ships

Yes, if you are stupid and sit on the railing or try to climb over it to get into the next room. It would be hard to just fall over.

I've been wondering the same thing. Having been on a cruise, I think it'd be pretty difficult to accidentally fall overboard. Not impossible, but difficult.

They are saying it was suicide as she was very depressed.

I'm not sure that I buy that after watching the interview of other passengers on TV. They said this couple were the "stars" of the ship, loud, party arnimals, etc. One passenger said he saw the DH the next day with a bag of money and asked what he was doing. He said he was going to the casino with the hopes that his luck would turn around. Does that sound normal for someone that just lost his wife? Chat Icon

I've been on 7 cruises. You can't accidentally fall overboard unless you are doing something REALLY stupid, like climbing the railings.

Maybe the people are really drunk? I can't imagine every person that goes over is completely wasted though...

I think some are excuses and they are pushed.

I also think some people get so sh*t faced drunk that they decide they should clumb and stand on a railing, or climb on a table next to a railing and since they are so p*ssed their balance is off and they actually fall.

But if your not wasted, and idiot or pushed, it would be really hard to fall off a cruise ship.

Re: Falling overboard on cruise ships

When we were getting off the cruise ship in Mexico, a woman actually slipped and fell in between two cruise ships that were docked. It was so scary...she was lifted out of the water immediately!
