Expired license & getting into a bar
I'm celebrating my birthday in two weeks and planned to have a small party at a bar two days after my actual birthday.
My license is expiring on my birthday and I sent away three weeks ago to get it renewed. They cashed my check last week but the website shows they still haven't mailed it out yet.
Does anyone know if I get carded at the bar if I can still drink? I'm well over 21, but if I don't get my license in time my current license will be expired. I don't know if they go by the birthdate or validity of the license, haha
ETA does a (non expired, haha)passport count as photo id?

Re: Expired license & getting into a bar
It depends on the bar. Most bars should not be a problem esp if you are with a group of everyone else who is fine. You should get your new license in time , but if not I think you can print out a temporary receipt type thing that shows you were renewed so you can just bring that with your expired license. Honestly , if the bar gives you are hard time just take your business someplace else.

Re: Expired license & getting into a bar
I used to check IDs when I worked at a restaurant. If it was expired, no drinks. If they gave me a tough time about this, then I would send a manager over and if they had some sort of receipt, then it was the manager's call.
Laws for liquor licensing and if there is an accident are no joke! If you want to "take your business elsewhere", then go ahead. It's not worth the risk to the bar.
A Passport is an acceptable ID form. It's what my husband uses when we visit (he has a non-US license).

Passports are acceptable- bring that as a backup.

depends on the bar but realistically they should not allow you in with an expired ID. Some might but most probably won't

Expired license & getting into a bar
Depends how old you are. At 35 I can't remember the last time I was asked for ID entering a bar. In your 20s it's a closer call. I get asked a lot in the supermarket but they have this rule where they ask if you look under 40. Never in a bar or restaurant. I can't imagine someone not letting you in with a couple days expired id. Would be very very unusual.
Eta if you are 30+ and got turned away, I WOULD take my business elsewhere bc it's practicing like zero discretion.

Re: Expired license & getting into a bar
This is what I could never understand: the license is just proof of the fact that its holder is of legal drinking age. Even expired, it's still proof of age. Unless you are driving with an expired license what does it matter if it's expired or not: it's still proof of you legal drinking age... Why give hard time about it??

b/c it is more likely to be fake. It is more of an issue with younger people. It was very common for girls in college to use their older sister or cousin's ID if it looked enough like them.

Yes! My husband had to bring his passport one night lol! He's 30 and doesn't normally get asked for ID at restaurants but definitely when it comes to getting in places. Bring both, don't pull out the passport unless you absolutely need to!
