My dd is 2 years old and when I go out for errands with her, I make sure she's fed and is well rested. The second we walk into any store, she yells SNACKSSSSSS bc I would give her snacks to keep her quiet while she was younger, but as she's now older- it's more difficult for me to be giving her snacks and running my errands. I see other children calmly sitting there and my dd has to be given snacks the WHOLE TIME! It's almost like she's just eating to eat... Sooooo... Twice now I've tried to not give snacks and my plan was to just offer her binky- well.... She screams and is hysterically crying/yelling snacks and it's so embarrassing. I feel like I can keep it together but it's annoying for everyone in the store to have to look over and think I'm starving my dd. I don't know what to do anymore. I try to run errands without her, but my DH works during the day so it's difficult not to. Please tell me what I can do bc I feel like we can't go out anymore as it's difficult to keep her calm, and I want to take her out of the house. Please help! TIA!!Chat Icon

I would not offer food or a binky. Both are habits to break. Let her hold a toy or a stuffed animal. Maybe she has a favorite she would like to play with while you are doing the errands. When we go into Target I usually walk by the dollar bin and give my 14 month DD something to hold or play with. Sometimes I buy it, other times I dont.

I think giving food is a bad idea bc it shows that when you're bored, eat!! Too many adults do this and I think it is a bad habit to break.

Re: Errands Hell

I always have snacks with me for both of my kids...sometimes they want it sometimes they dont but i never leave the house with out snacks. I would just offer it to her and keep her busy/happy. Occasionally i let DD watch something on my phone (she's 4) but that only works with her and not DS who is 1.

I would try to redirect her and focus on something else, like helping you with your shopping list or point out things that are a certain color. Or bring a small toy.

It's definitely a habit and not hunger from what you said. My DS would do the same thing "SNAAAACK" LOL since I always had something with me just in case, but now we distract him if we know he's probably not hungry.

This. I used to joke that I would give my DD a crack pipe if it kept her quiet in a store.

don't take this the wrong way, but shopping with a 14 month old is waaaayyyy different than shopping with a 2 year old. and believe me sometimes you just gotta give the goldfish if you want to get shit done.

I agree! Giving in is just going to make it worse. A few hard trips to the store and she will get over it

Yep. 2 years old= WHOLE other world.
Besides, my DD is so thin, she could use some weight from snacking when bored. I worry about her weight sometimes. She needs to pack on some pounds.

Lol!!!! I feel like I was one of those people that would say- my child is going to just learn how to behave and that's it! But now it's becoming impossible to do anything without giving her an endless supply of snacks Chat Icon But what about the looks from everyone if I don't offer her snacks? My dd is yelling SNAAAAACKSSSS as if I'm starving her Chat Icon

Me too. I always keep snacks in my bag and only offer them when we've reached a meltdown. I have 2yo twins who are always with me when I run errands... a mamas gotta do what a mamas gotta do!! Does your daughter sit in her stroller or the shopping cart when you're out? Maybe sitting her in the cart and getting her involved by grabbing items off the shelves will help. I used to do this when my 4yo was little and it kept him happy!

Please don't pay any mind to how other people around you react to her outbursts. When I see a two year old in a cart with cheetoes I thinks to myself "That's an experienced Mom choosing her battles" and others may gasp that you are feeding your child poison. Do what you gotta do.

FYI my kids are the same way. Unfortunately snacks don't even work anymore.

I guess we will see in a few months lol But I dont think supplying endless snacks is a way to encourage good behaviors. I think distractions can be used with plenty of other alternatives (then food).

I think it can be a phase too. My DD was like that at that age and I would just pack healthy snacks for her and cut her off at a certain point. Now she's 4 and doesn't require snacks to keep occupied in the stores.

This! My DS rarely asks anymore at 3.( he's too busy getting into trouble doing other things/not wanting to be in the cart) If he does I say sure but you have to sit in the cart to eat it. Either way I win hehe . If a simple snack allows you to get stuff done with less stress I definitely wouldn't let that add to your list of worries

My daughter used to be the same when she was 2. I was mortified any time I went to a store and realized I didn't have a granola bar bc she'd cry for it the entire time. For the time being, I just did my best to have a good stock of them in the diaper bag. She used to reenact the trauma when we were playing at home when she'd hold her toy bag and offer me a granola bar only to look in and tell me, nope I don't have any! Lol

Eventually she just grew out of it without a fight. Now she usually brings a toy or two or fonds some other way to keep busy. I would just deal with it for now and pack things you don't mind her eating.

Re: Errands Hell

So instead I of having her be well fed give her her lunch at that time. Or go during snack. We sing in the store or I put on his favorite songs.

I always have snacks on hand for my 2.5 year old when we're out. I don't see it as a big deal to feed him. He's such a picky eater that I'm happy when he eats, whatever he's eating!

I do this too with DS who is about to turn 2. It definitely helps keep him calm.
