Re: ER bill
what they bill the insurance companies is insane. I had some bloodwork done a few months ago and they billed the ins. co. over $1200!
If you didn't have insurance, I don't think you would be required to pay as much as the insurance compaines are getting billed.
For example - I had to get a night guard made for my TMJ and my dental ins. didn't cover it, so the dentist said he would split the cost with me 50/50 -so do you think he's not making any money on it? Somehow I doubt it.

Re: ER bill
If you haven't already seen Michael Moore's film "SICKO," you should see it. It addresses these very issues.

I just sent this thread to my DH and his response:
Somebody has to pay for all the people free loading on the system.

I havent seen this, but Im pretty sure that the reason we are paying so much has nothing to do with is agenda, but the fact that people use the ER as a clinic because they dont want to wait for a doctors appointment and there are so many people without insurance who cant go to a private doctor. Someone has to pay for it, and unfortunately we do. It is true that if you dont have insurance you are not billed the same as if you do, but most of these people without could care less, they have no assets to seize, they have no money to garnish, if they go to collections and ruin thier credit they dont care. Its the middle class people who dont want to lose thier houses or wind up in collections for thousands that have the most to lose.
When you see people wearing 3 carat diamond rings, using cell phones, carrying expensive bags and then hand you a medicaid card..You will want to puke. We are working our azzes off to pay taxes and these people could care less.
I have no problem with people who really need the help getting true emergency care, but what constitutes an emergency is the key. Life threatening, yes they should be able to be seen without insurance. However, if its not an emergency we should be able to turn them away, but we cannot.
