ER bill
My DH went to the ER last month suspecting he had kidney stones. They did a cat scan and a sonogram, and a urine analysis.
He was not admitted, and they did not even take blood or give any meds. He was discharged 5 hours later.
$6,200!!!
Thank goodness for insurance, but I cant possibly imagine how this all added up??

Re: ER bill
Trust me- I had the same thing. It was insane. They had to give me a pregnancy test before they did the CAT scan- just to be safe- and that pregnancy test was like $100. Come on now...
Insanity!

I think I am going to call Good Sam and ask for a break down, just for my own curiosity. I cant imagine where they came up with all of this. It literally breaks down to more than $1000/hr

I work in an ER, and although I dont know how much things are all the time, I do know that the CT scan and the fee to be read by the radiologist are what is probably making up most of that bill. I know the sono is good for about $2k since I had one in the ER as well.
I also strongly advise people NOT to just walk out of the ER after they are triaged because they are ****** about the wait or whatever..If you walk out or sign out to leave against medical advice, the insurance company will NOT pay the bill. Just to be triaged and registered counts as an ER visit, so even if you didnt see the doctor yet, they can still send you a bill. As far as I know the bill is not disputable. They don't care if you dont like the service, or had to wait there all night, unfortunatly. Just an FYI.

My bill was broken down- each drug they gave me, each test- it was broken down like that.
Then to top it off- I got another bill- weeks later- for a Dr to READ the catscan. It was like $600 for that alone.
Unreal!

I was admitted 2x this year! In Jan. I ended up having a C-Section, my DS cost about $17,000.
In June, I had a gall bladder attack. The gall bladder HAD to come out. That cost, I believe another 10 or $11,000.00
Yes, THANK GOODNESS for inusrance! It's CRAZY!

Re: ER bill
The thought of not having insurance scares the crap out of me. I don't care what type of situation we wind up in, I will always make sure we are covered. Medical bills can ruin one's life very easily.

Can you believe even with those 'crazy' bills the majority of hospitals are operating with a LOSS ?? -
It is scary how much it costs to run a hospital -

Re: ER bill
This is so true- the costs add up so quickly. I don't know what I'd do if we didn't have insurance..
~My poor girlfriend who has lupus was just diagnosed with Parkinsons on top of that! So her bills are astronomical because insurance is refusing to cover any medication for the Parkinsons... She has had to take on a 2nd job just to pay the bills!!!!!! As if she wasn't already run-down

How can they refuse to cover her medications when she has had a professional diagnosis ?? - That is awful, I hate to hear stories like that -

But it's a disease - it's not like she's getting some kind of elective surgery - I can't fathom an Insurance company could refuse to cover maitenence drugs for something like that ........ - I guess I am niave .... -

I've heard some horror stories. Unfortunately, some of the time, people who make these decisions are not physicians but administrators and are only looking at the bottom line.
Some diseases are not even covered on some plans.
My brother's plan didn't cover traumatic brain injury. Only recently was there legislation passed that required insurance companies to pay for artificial limbs for amputees.
they are covering everthing thankfully but it had to get special approval for all of his in-patient therapy. Otherwise, he would have been left to recover in a nursing home without any tools to help him and would just rot. The outcome would be horrendous.
Ok, off my soapbox, but the doctors have told me that they had a 17 year old in a coma and they would only pay for 6 days of in-patient therapy. the family had to take him home like that with around the clock care.
this is what kept me up at night for months. At any minute the insurance company can say, nah, we don't want to pay for this anymore or at all for that reason.

the insurance companies are still making tons of money.
it's big business greed and doctors can't be doctors anymore because of managed care...they have to be administrators and make $$ decisions when they should be making medical decisions.
Very sad.

I had sinus surgery in July and it was a tad over 40k. I guess it was good that I didn't go to your hospital or it would have been like 100k.

Re: ER bill
I don't think that the insurance companies pay full price either.
I had an emergency surgery a couple of years ago and was uninsured and the bill came out to almost 40k. We got the hospital down to what the insurance companies would have paid which was still a lot but no where near what they were trying to make me as an individual pay.
If it wasn't for my FIL doing all the negotiating I don't know what I would have done!

She reached her cap very early in the year with about 7 hospital stays.
