Education and Success
Do you think nowadays someone can be successful without a college degree?

Re: Education and Success
Yes I do. There are many careers that do not require advanced degrees where people make more money than those of us who have them.

Re: Education and Success
absolutely. There are still plenty of fields out there that do not require a college degree. There are many specific skills or trades that people specialize in without getting a degree.

Yes, but as other people have said, it depends on the field. In my field, it would difficult, close to impossible to get an entry level job without a college degree.

Yes. However, I don't think an education or a degree is ever a "waste" and even it is not being "used," you never know what the future may bring and it is something that you will always have.

Re: Education and Success
Totally depends on the field. As some of the other posters have said, in some fields you can't get in at entry level without a 4-year degree. Other professions value experience more. Also, a degree and education are not necessarily the same thing - education can come through apprenticeships, experience, or good ol' self-taught book learning.
ETA: It also depends on the person. Some people can accomplish pretty much anything they try, others have to work every angle they can to get into the same places.

That's exactly how I feel! Although it depends on the profession of course, in the field I'm in you need a degree to get ahead.

Re: Education and Success
My brother is tremendously successful as is my father--one a CFO the other a business owner--neither one college. Very smart and industrious--I think it just takes the know how and hard work in some industries.

Re: Education and Success
I'm sure Bill Gates and Michael Dell (Dell computers) would agree that a college degree is not mandatory....
For most people, it's also not mandatory, but like most other people mentioned, it depends on the industry. In the IT field, where I'm from, you can't be hired in my company without a degree, but there are many smaller companies that care more about what you can actually do than what degree you have, so you can get a prestigious, well paying job by just working your way up the ladder, and getting a job at a smaller company.
Also, after you have about 10 years of experience, give or take, it is much easier to get a better job. After that much experience, many employers aren't as concerned with a degree since you've proven yourself in the industry. Of course, there are many companies who still won't look at you without a degree, but there are still plenty of opportunities.

Absolutely. Union tradesmen(electricians, plumbers, metalworkers) all make excellent salaries.

I agree, too.
BUT- I think as time goes on, it is harder and harder to be sucessful without one. Not too long ago, you could get a decent administrative/secreterial job without a degree, and work your way up. Now it seems they all require one, regardless of how much experience you have.

Re: Education and Success
yup! i don't think that college is for everybody, and i think there are plenty of carreers out there that make excellent salaries but don't require school. my dad is the perfect example. he doesn't have a college degree, but he and my mom opened up a garden center. they now make 6 figures a year, have two houses, and travel about 3 months out of the year during the "off season". so, yeah, if you work hard, its definitely possible!

Re: Education and Success
I agree that you can be very successful but typically you either need to develop a trade or go head on into a business and bust you butt for years. My mother owns an Assisted Living Facility in Florida. She is the administrator as well and only has a high school diploma. It all depends on your drive and the industry.

I've got to say, I think this all depends on how you define success. I am nearly done with my doctorate but I am doing it knowing I am never going to make as much as I would have had I stayed on Wall Street. Money does not equal success to me, and education certainly does not guarantee more money (though in general those with higher degrees show up as making more on census polls).
I feel very fulfilled by working in my current profession, and by the fact that I am now an expert in the area that I have studied for so long, but I did not go to school for so long as a guarantee of money.
