Earring spinoff

If you have/may one day have a little girl, did/will you pierce her ears as an infant?

I have always been torn about this. I love the way baby girls look with pierced ears, but then I always think, "who am I to choose to put holes in my child's head? If she wants them one day, then she'll get them."

Not meant to offend anyone - it's totally a personal decision. I'm interested in hearing other people's opinions.

ETA: I got mine done when I asked at age 8. I originally asked at age 5, but jumped off the chair before they could even mark the dots on my ears! Chat Icon I got my second hole at age 16.

no, I will let her make the decision for herself.

ETA: I personally think infant girls with pierced ears look unnatural.

When she is old enough to say she wants it done, she will get it done.

I don't really like the look of earrings on babies - but even if I did, I would let her wait until she was old enough to make the decision and take care of her ears herself (5th or 6th grade)

Yes, but my perspective is unique, because I am such a scaredy cat that I never would have had my ears pierced on my own because I am afraid. At least babies don't remember the painChat Icon

My daughter is 4 1/2 and doesn't have pierced ears. Dh and I think not until she's old enough to decide she wants them and is responsible enough to take care of them.

Re: Earring spinoff

Nope. I was 16 when I got pierced ears. As a mom, I don't think I would want to worry about them getting infected or caught on things. I would wait until she can take care of them herself.

I was 8 when I got mine done, and my mom made a big deal about it. I love the memory and if I have a girl I would want to do the same thing so she has it as a memory.

Plus, when I did get them done, I had such infections at first. And with everything a baby already needs, I won't want to deal with something that is not needed.

Re: Earring spinoff

I got my first hole piercings the first time I went to the doctor. My mother said i was about a month. i will do the same with my daughter. I have many gold and diamond baby earrings that I will pass down to my daughter.

I got the second holes pierced with my mother when I was 16.

Re: Earring spinoff

my 9 month old neice has them and she looks adorable. She hasn't had any infections. Her pediatrician said this is the perfect age to have them done.

Maybe it's an Italian thing too. My grandmother had hers pierced very young also.

My little girl will have them done.

Cassidy doesn't have hers pierced, and although I don't know of an exact age where we'll let her get it done, I'd say AT LEAST 8 or 9 years old.

If I have a girl, I will pierce her ears when she is an infant. My mom did it and I never wished she hadn't done that.

I always thought it was odd when the girls at school didn't have their ears pierced and had to wait till they were a certain age.

Re: Earring spinoff

I had to wait until I was 13 and then my mom brought me to my ped and he did it.

I would probably follow the same idea - but maybe a tad earlier if she is responsible.

Re: Earring spinoff

My ears were pierced by the Dr when I was young...then again by the same Dr at around 3, after a friend ripped one of the earrings out - tearing my earlobe. Chat Icon

When my daughter asks, I will take her - but not before then.

I'm waiting until she's older, begs to have them & can take care of them herself.

I agree with it seeming a little strange to have this little perfect baby & then alter it for aesthetics. I felt the same way with circumcisions but it did it. Better as an infant, than having to put him under anesthesia. Hard decision for anyone.

I feel the same about circumcisions too, but at least that is for hygienic reasons. Ear piercing is more for vanity.

Unfortunately, that's debatable depending on what book you read, what doctors you talk to. Right now I'm dealing with my son's other hygenic bathroom issues, dealing with the uncut version would be a nightmare.

Sorry for the hijack.

My 4 1/2 yo doesn't have them pierced yet. We were at the mall this weekend and walked by a store(maybe claire's?) that had a display sign....we stopped and I asked her if she wanted them. First she didn't get what I was talking about and I pointed out my ears and she said "nah...I don't want those." Chat Icon
