I don't know how true it is anymore, but it used to be. I was born Dec 28th and my mom fought with the school to let her register us...but no good, so we spent and extra year in nursury school. Then...we were always the oldest in our classes.

I would not even worry about that now! December 1st is the cutoff on Long Island for all the districts, I think. IMO, it's better to be the oldest in a grade, than the youngest.

Re: due date and school

the cut off for Catholic school in queens was December 31st, so it may depend on where you live and whether you are sending your child to public/catholic school.

Actually, I'm feeling opposite of you. Chat Icon is due in the middle of November, which would make him one of the youngest in his class. Depending on how things go, I might start him late b/c I think it is better to be older (or really as old) as all the other kids in the class than a year younger than everybody.

It depends on the school district. Not all districts have a December 1st cutoff. Some are the 15th and some are the 31st. Call your district to find out which one.

I don't think you should even worry about it. I don't believe that being the oldest, or being the youngest, has any specific advantages or disadvantages. Each case should be decided on an individual basis. What's best for one child may not be the best for another.

I agree!

My birthday is December 31st and at that time, I guess there was no "cut-off" date. So I was put into school along with everyone other chid born my birth year. Yes, I was always the "youngest" in my class but I never felt like it was a big deal or a 'disadvantage' ... I adjusted fine, did well in school, etc.

Maybe it's me, but I'm not really sure why so many people think that being the yongest is such a bad thingChat Icon

I'm January 4, so I was always the youngest too. But I had already spent two years in pre-school and was ready to move onto kindergarten.
I wouldn't want to hold my child back if they were ready to move forward. Chat Icon

Re: due date and school

You'll wait & see how your child is developing when it's time to make the decision. Some kids are very prepared and ready to begin kindergarden while others will benefit more from another year of preschool. It really depends on the child.
