DS has a bad cough w/phlegm, what can I do?
We are leaving on vacation soon (4 days), flying, and of course DS caught DH's cold. He started coughing yesterday and is coughing a lot more today and you can hear phlegm/congestion in there when he coughs. His nose is stuffy but not runny, yet.
What can I do to help him and not let it get worse? He's 3. Anything I can give him?
He's so looking forward to going away, I would hate for him to be sick

I would go to the doctors and get prescribed cough medicine and maybe antibiotics. My son get bad cough all the time and the cough medicine from the doctor helps relieve but the antbiotics knocks it out. They also giving him the nebulizer treatment sometimes.
This also happend to us while we were on vacation in FL before going on a cruise and we had the doctor call in the cough medicine for us to knock it out before we boarded the ship.

See the doctor. I did that before we took AJ on a tripp she got better on her own but it was nice to have the RX just in case. But if its just a cold threes no much you can do. Lots of fluids, humidifier, baby vicks rub, saline for the noise, avoid dairy and honey and tylenol.

Personally, I would not ask for antibiotics for a cough that just started. Antibiotics wreak havoc on the digestive system and should only be used when really necessary.
Run a humidifier in his room at night. Keep making him blow his nose. Run a hot shower and let him sit in the bathroom for 10- 15 minutes. Put Vicks on his feet and cover with socks to help with the cough. Cut out all dairy and refined sugars. Give him raw honey with lemon a few times a day.

Just to clarify I didnt say to ask for antibiotics, I said maybe they will prescribe it. If my doctor prescribes antibiotics obviosuly she/he thinks he has an infection. I know that when my son is sick with an infection he gets a persistent cough that does not clear up with cough medicine alone.
Just like vaccination its up to you on how you ultimately want to treat your child and what is best for your child.

Whenever my 3.5 yr old has that, ped says benadryl to dry them up. It works like a charm.
