Ava has a bad cough...question...
Poor Ava has a bad cold with a decent cough. I can't give her anything for it, right? I have the vapor plug-in in her room, which works pretty well, and she's drinking plenty of fluids, but it kills me that she can't sleep from her cough. Just wondering if anyone knows of anything for a 3 yo? TIA!

Re: Ava has a bad cough...question...
For really bad coughs my ped has allowed me to give DS 1/2 tsp of Children's Delsum. We do it sparingly and if he can't sleep I do give it.

Call your ped some do allow for some things. Is her chest tight? Maybe you could give her some musinex - it won't stop the cough but it will keep the muscus loose so that her cough is more productive

My Ped says a 2 year old can have Robitussion DM only--VERY small amount. Also, use Saline religiously.

Also, try Vick's baby vapor rub.

Re: Ava has a bad cough...question...
Thanks for your responses. I think she probably has a bad post nasal drip, and that's what's causing the cough, so I'll give the ped. a call in the morning. hopefully he'll let me give her something because she's so miserable.

Re: Ava has a bad cough...question...
Have you tried a teaspoon of honey? I think it is supposed to help with coughs as well as sore throats.
If you really feel you need to give her medication, I would talk to her pediatricain re: what to give her. I know the cough suppresants are not recommended for people of any age since you generally need to cough things up.
Also, if the cough is being caused by a lot of mucus drip, a decongestant may help more, so I would talk to the doctor.

We use Delsym for coughs.
ETA: If it's post nasal drip you can use Benadryl.
Most of the controversy is over decongestants.
