My 5yo was covered in an itchy rash this morning. It was mostly on her trunk. I put cortisone on it, gave her a dose of benadryl and sent her off to school. I did send the teacher a note in case she is miserable or drowsy. Just not sure if I should have kept her home and now I feel bad.

I would have done the same. I am sure if she is not feeling well they will call you.
I only keep her home if she has a fever, is throwing up or feels really bad.

I really hope it settles down and she does okay. I was so looking forward to finally having a day with everyone at school so I can get things done. Never a dull moment!

Same. Unless they have a fever or they are throwing up they go to school. Strep and ear infections included A rash? Tough call but I would have done the same. Hope she better soon

I absolutely would have sent her. I only keep DD home if her temp is over 100.4, she’s vomiting or is very uncomfortable. If the school will take her, she’s there.

I would also send her in with an ear infection if there was no fever and she started antibiotics. Ear infections are not contagious.

I'd probably keep her home and go to the doctor. (If I had no idea what it was.)

its hard with these things and I know the feeling of second guessing yourself! My worry would really just be the Benadryl bc it KNOCKS my kid out when I have to give it to her.

I might have kept her home or decided to take her to the doc after school if the rash still persisted once benadryl wore off.

That’s what I would have done. I’d want to keep an eye on it in case it spreads or if she scratches it, it could be contagious.

This was part of my worry bc I haven't given it to her since she was a year old so I don't know how she'll react. I only gave her a teaspoon so I'm equally concerned it's not enough to help either.

With a new rash? I would keep home, dose with Benadryl and if it came back or didn’t go away, go to pediatrician.

Could be nothing, could be strep.

Why don’t you pick her up early from school? That way you can check her out before ped offices close.

I would have probably done an early dr appointment and then determined if they could go to school. It could be a reaction to something or it could be strep throat (my kids get it sometimes without a fever or sore throat).

I probably wouldn't have sent her to be honest. But, I'm coming from the viewpoint that a friend of mine sent her daughter to school with a fever the week before break, had a cough and clear case of the flu, but sent her so she could pack for vacation, then mine got sick with the flu shortly thereafter. If you know it's not strep, or roseola, and an allergic reaction, then send her. But, since you didn't know what it is...I probably wouldn't have to be honest. So many kids are sent to school with some sort of illness when they can stay home. Also, like someone else said, Benadryl typically makes kids drowsy.

Doubting myself. Wwyd

My DS has frequent eczema flare ups this time of year (Feb-April) due to the dry, cold weather so I send him to daycare frequently with a rash if he has no other symptoms (fever, sore throat, cough, etc). He has had this though since he was an infant.

I told the teacher not to hesitate to send her to the nurse and I haven't heard anything so hopefully it's gotten better.

I'm wondering if it could be a reaction to her nightgown. She had been wearing one of the Disney ones that seem like they'd be itchy and uncomfortable. She's had it forever and worn it a thousand times though. However, I remembered back in early January she was wearing it and got a rash too. She was sick at the time so I chalked it up to the virus. That time she had a roseola looking rash (tiny red spots) although her fever still came back so I didn't think that was it. This time she was more like one giant hive on her stomach along with some other sporadic blotches. Idk, doesn't make sense to suddenly have a reaction after all this time though.

Has she been on antibiotics in the last couple of weeks? Both DS 1 and I had a bad reaction a couple of years ago about a week after we finished 10 days of Augmentin.

I would not send my child to school with an unknown rash.
Hopefully it’s nothing serious or contagious.

I would have sent my child. Honestly you did more than I would have done. Im always nervous about Benadryl making them tired or the opposite crazy and off the wall. My son had a rash yesterday on his arm, when water is too cold his skin tends to break out. Its the first week back to school so I sent him. I figured if it was bothering him then he would have gone to the nurse.

I know my school nurse always sends home for a rash and requires a doctor's note to return. My daughter gets many unexplained rashes due to her allergies and she always sends home. Knowing my school policy, I would have kept her home.

It's better but still there. I think at school she was well distracted so she left it alone which was good. She's itching it a little now which is irritating it again. Aside from the rash she's fine so I don't think there's anything the doctor will do at this point.

That would drive me INSANE! My son has eczema and gets rashes frequently in the late winter due to the dry air.

Seriously, not to mention the doctors rarely seem to even know what they are! When dd was a toddler I took her to pm peds and then to her ped the next day for a rash and they thought two totally different things. Last month she had a rash they said roseola and her fever definitely won't come back. Guess what? Fever came back that night so they were wrong. What is the point in going to the doctor for them to guess at what it is?
