Don't know what to do for DD- Long- please offer advice
DD was such a happy baby for the first week & 1/2. She was a good eater and basically ate, slept and pooped. After that..she became very fussy and gassy. You could see her obviously struggling with the gas and to poop. We switched her formula from Similac advanced to Enfamil Gentle Ease per the ped's instructions. After three days on that- she wasn't any better. In fact, one night she didn't sleep AT ALL and she was obviously miserable. So the ped switched her to Similac Isomil (soy). The first day and night were great, she slept and ate and was obviously happier..although still seemed to struggle a little with pooping and some gas. Today, she barely slept all day and only seems to be comforted when I hold her and rock her. and she HATES being on her back. Usually she loves her infant seat (my little lamb) and today, she just didn't want it. she was obviously struggling more with poop and gassiness. She is pooping- about twice a day. When I call the ped..he lectures me for about 10 mins about burping. I do burp her..I stop her bottle every ounce and burp her. Sometimes she burps, sometimes she doesn't. I've tried different techniques and positions. I rub her back, pat it, bicycle her legs, rub her tummy. We also give her Mylicon when she seems especially uncomfortable. She is eating..every 2 & 1/2-3 hours, she takes 3 (sometimes 4) ounces. I just feel bad, because i can see that she's not happy. am I doing something wrong? I can see how tired she is and she's just too uncomfortable to sleep. This isn't about me and being frustrated, it's about my little girl being upset. I can't stand to see her like this. I feel like the ped thinks I'm an idiot and I know I'm not. I can tell my daughter is not happy. Dh just got chamomile tea, so we will try that with her next bottle. I'm really hoping that works. I dread calling the Ped again. If you've made it this far..any advice?

I'm sorry your little girl is unhappy - it is so frustrating when that happens. For the mylecon - we give DS it before every single feed - check with your ped but I think its ok even at that age. I think that helped him a lot. He's on Simila Sensitive which he also took to better than the ADvanced or so I think, it may just be in my head. I also have a wedge for him to sleep on - supposedly it helps with digestion. Keep on burping - my DS lately gets very upset when he has a burp and it hasn't come out - like screaming - it stinks to see them like that. I just keep trying different positions to get out the burp. They say also put them on their tummies across your lap - does she calm down if you do that?

First, The beginning is HARD! Even if everything is perfect, there will be hard/bad days...hang in there.
2nd, if you really are not happy with your PED, switch! Sooner the better...you should feel comfortable calling
3rd, if you're really worried about the gas/poop issues, can you see a PEd GI to get some suggestions?
4th, Let her sleep on you if you need to, you can worry about the "habits" later, she's still so young
And finally, its kind of a crapshoot in the beginning because you're still learning who this person is, so it will take some time. That mixed with PP hormones is just crazy. It will get better!

Re: Don't know what to do for DD- Long- please offer advice
thanks girls. I have a sleep positioner, which I put two rolled up blankets on to elevate it. I do let her sleep on me, bc bottom line, I want her to be comfortable, I'll worry about breaking habits when that time comes. I guess I'll keep working on the burping. I give the mylicon after just about every feeding, I'll try doing it before them. I am thinking about switching peds..I just don't like the way he speaks to me. I was just rocking her and she let out two huge burps..the ped said that it isn't normal for her to burp on her own, that obviously I'm not burping correctly. I try different positions tho..
I know that babies can be fussy, but she seems uncomfortable, so that's my concern. If it's not better in a day or so, I will call the ped and see what he says about a ped GI.
THANKS AGAIN!

Re: Don't know what to do for DD- Long- please offer advice
Ok I just read this and your ped sounds like a d*ckhead. Sorry, that just makes me annoyed that he's treating a first time mom this way. Also 3 different formulas in one week??? The poor thing hasn't had a chance t adjust to anything yet!!!! Mine was uncomfortable the first few weeks too, but I used mylicon with EVERY feeding, (I was BF and FF for the first 7 or 8 weeks). It really helps.
I'm sure you are burping her correctly, don't worry, you will find your way with that.
Also, one other tip. Mine would fuss and I just KNEW he was constipated (pooped once or twice a day that was it). So I started using the "thermometer trick" as advised on this board It helped sooooooooo much. Worked like a charm. I needed to do it for about a month on and off and it really really helped!!!

First, I think you need a new ped...you should not dread calling them and if you do, they are not doing their job
secondly, the first few weeks are pure torture, their little systems are trying to regulate and it takes time
I would continue to give gas drops in each bottle, try gripe water (you can get this at target or any drug store)
hang in there, it does get better, I promise

Re: Don't know what to do for DD- Long- please offer advice
My DS was very, very gassy and uncomfortable if I wasn't holding him 24/7. My ped. blew it off as normal baby issues, but I knew it was something more. It turned out to be a dairy allergy which was diagnosed by a GI doctor. Also, mylicon drop at every feeding worked wonders. know gripe water works for some babies, but I never tried it. Massaging his belly and holding his knees to his belly also helped him pass the gas.

Your Ped sounds like a jerk IMO...
You soudn like your doing your best and thens ome! Try Gripe Water, that worked much better for us with all 3 kids then the mylicion!
The gas issues tend to subside around 12 weeks a bit as their stomachs are more developed at that age, so HANG IN THERE...there is an end in sight!

Re: Don't know what to do for DD- Long- please offer advice
My DD became very unhappy at 1 1/2-2 weeks old - inconsolable and not interested in food. She had a milk protein allergy and was fine once we switched to Alimentum. Just as an fyi, many babies with milk protein allergies are also allergic to soy protein. I would get him tested - they can test a poopy diaper for blood. Didn't need to do that for my DD but only because the blood specks were visible to my eye - they aren't always.
Later, about 7 weeks, DD had different issues... turns out it was reflux (silent reflux though so the symptoms are more subtle). DD also always preferred being semi-upright.
I'd get a new ped because you have to feel comfortable with this person. Also, you need someone who's really listening to what's going on and I'm not sure that your ped is. This may be typical newborn trouble - their digestive systems are so immature - but it could also be a serious medical issue and your ped's job is to help you figure out which it is. Not sure if Alimentum will be your answer, but I wouldn't change formula again without another conversation with the ped and probably with a new ped. I'm not on LI, but I'm sure the ladies on here can give you excellent recs for someone near you - a new ped or a ped GI. Better safe than sorry.

thanks girls.
I really liked this ped when we met with him..not sure what happened.
I really liked the one we saw in the hospital..and my cousin uses them, so I'm thinking of switching.
good to know i'm not the only one that has issues with this.

Re: Don't know what to do for DD- Long- please offer advice
Would it be possible to give your DD 2 ounces at a time? Instead of 3 or 4? Just a suggestion, at 1 1/2 weeks I think the most my baby was eating at one feeding was about 2.5 ounces.
I agree with the PP, if you have to hold her to get her to sleep, hold her. I used to hold with the boppy under him and sleep in the recliner. I would sleep too, he was snuggled safely. It will get better

Re: Don't know what to do for DD- Long- please offer advice
I'm sorry she's uncomfortable. Have you tried a different bottle? We use the Playtex VentAire. Dr. Brown's are also supposed to be good at reducing gas.
Do you give her a warm bottle or cold? I read that cold was fine and since DD freaks out as soon as she wants a bottle I was giving it to her right out of the fridge. We found out that if we heat the bottles, then she's much more comfortab.e
And we switched to Good Start Gentle and it seems to have worked like a charm.
Good luck. I hope your LO can get some relief.

Re: Don't know what to do for DD- Long- please offer advice
My son was the same way. The tea really helped. I used ch momile, and fennel tea, (2oz 1/4 tsp of sugar) between bottles.... I think twice a day. It helped his belly, and helped him go to the bathroom.
I also agree about seeing the GI doctor.

Re: Don't know what to do for DD- Long- please offer advice
UPDATE: We had a very rough night last night a bad day today..dd was miserable. I did the thermometer trick and she pooped- twice. Called the ped..and he was much nicer..I think he heard how upset I was. We are now on Nutramagin and after two bottles she is soo much better.
I also gave her some gripe water..seemed to work better than Mylicon. I know it's all a guessing game and trial and error, so this seems to be working (FINGERS CROSSED).
Ped said if she's not better by Saturday, we will have to see a Ped GI.
That my little girl is feeling better and the Nutramagin works..I can't stand to see her in obvious pain.
I want to thank all of you for your advice and suggestions and most of all your support!! Don't know what I would do without this site!!

Re: Don't know what to do for DD- Long- please offer advice
DD became like this after a few weeks. She had colic too. We tried Gentlease, Isomil and even Alimentum. What finally worked for her was Similac Sensitive. Hope your DD feels better soon and you find a solution. I know how frustrating it is.
