I think this is a GREAT idea!

I adopted a family last year through the middle school in KP bc its such a great thing to do for the holidays!

I would TOTALLY participate!

Would this be a wishlist type of thing, like we anonymously adopt a family or you just send out a general list of needed items and we can buy as few or as many items off the list as needed?

Would this wishlists from the family be toys and clothes or just clothing?

Would parents be included or just the children?

I was planning on just doing children. I wanted to leave it up to the parent to decide whether they wanted help with toys (it is the holidays) and/or clothing. I was planning on just posting a generic list so no one could make out who the person was. Such as....

Boy 6 months (clothes only)
Girl age 2 size 2T (clothes and toys)

Then as the gifts come in I can distribute them properly.I am totally open to better suggestions or ideas though!

OK thats cool, I was just curious. Thats probably a better way anyway if there are say only 5 families in need, that more than 5 people can help out! Plus, if say there is a 6month old boy in need of toys, he gets more than one or two, bc more people can participate.

Maybe they need to have at least say 500 posts or something, so we know its not someone who just signed up or created a fake name just for the gifts, and they are truly an active member of this community?

Agreed! As far as abusing this gesture, I am trying to look at it from the person on the receiving side. I don't want to belittle or embarrass those who truly are in need by trying to prove they actually need help. I think the 500 post idea is excellent! Other than that, I am hoping that this is an online community of honest mothers who are whole heartedly here to help others as well a receive help. After all, that is why I am here! There are some nutty people in the world but I am hoping this little LIFamilies world is free of them!

Also, i figured a generic list of the children as oppose to families would be better because I didn't want the mommies to be discovered based on the kids info and process of elimination.

maybe start a new thread with the info so it doesnt get lost in case they dont see this one, and you can bump periodically.

for your own sanity, maybe a "application deadline" and then a donation deadline so you arent chasing people around last minute, or people dont ask for help the week before and end up getting nothing bc people have already been donating for weeks beforehand, KWIM?

Ill totally come over and help you with all this, just call me!

What a great idea.

I wouldn't get bogged down with people having to prove their neediness.

If someone feels they need, they need. I won't judge.

I would rather get taken advantage of for over giving than be scared away from giving because someone might get one over on us.

ITA! I think this is a wonderful idea and I think if you start requiring proof of some sort, you may scare away the people that are really in need.

Re: Donate to LIFamilies in need for the holidays!

Thanks for posting this, it's a wonderful idea! Chat Icon I'd be happy to donate!

I only have one concern, and I'm not sure how to word it, so I'll explain (sorry, my brain isn't working right now). What if one child that needs clothes and toys (let's say size 2T and 2 yr & up toys as an example) gets 20 items, but another child (say 4T and age appropriate toys) only gets 3? Is there a way to do this so the donations are distributed a little more evenly amongst the recipients? Is this making any sense?

Makes complete sense! Once I know who is participating maybe I can distribute it evenly amongst who is donating. Definitely a great idea to keep everything fair and make sure every child gets evenly!

What if you post children's ages and needs and people can pick the child they want to buy for, and then you can remove them from the list? Or something like that? I do hope everyone gets at least one gift.

I have done this in the mall for Salvation army. You pick a name/ornament off the tree and you buy based on one child's age and request. Then that ornament is taken off.

I usually would buy for 3 kids. So many children to choose from, so hard.Chat Icon

I think it's a great idea - but maybe Ron can be the "middle man" or another LIF Admin this way the posters can REALLY be anonymous, KWIM?

This would be fine with me! However, as I said I am sort of new to LIF so I am not sure how that would work. Someone just has to direct me with doing this part lol

Send a forum mail to Client Services. I'm sure Kim & Ron can contact you from that point forward.

Interesting thought. I would be afraid random people would create fake accounts to take advantage.

I saw if it's a regular poster, they have to find a way to put their pride aside to just let us help their children enjoy the holiday. Hard, but it's all the best for the kids plus the OP has promised to keep it private and that i am sure she will.

I was thinking.....as for how to make sure the gifts are "fair" maybe make it 3 gifts per needed item.

So say there is a 6mo old - needs clothes, 5 year old needs toys, etc. A master thread with the list can be made and people can respond with which donations that will make in that thread, then we can update the OP of that thread with a tally next to that item and once there are says 3 checks next to it, that item is no longer available to purchase for, KWIM?

Re: Donate to LIFamilies in need for the holidays!

As for the OP - Ive known her my entire life, she grew up across the street and is one of my sisters best friends and I would trust her with my life or my biggest secret. She is one of the sweetest, kindest, most loyal people I have ever met and is definitely one of the most trust worthy people ever. I can assure you without a doubt that she would never ever say anything to anyone.
