dogs in stores

NOT seeing eye dogs but little dogs in purses
when did they start letting people put them in shopping carts and bring them into the store??

I was at the store the other day and I was looking in the card dept when I felt heavy breathing on my arm and it was a dog in the front of a shopping cart

BTW...I think it's utterly ridiculous. I'm not allowed to bring my Weimie shopping, why is someone else allowed to bring their Maltese?
Not to mention anyone who has an allergy and now has to deal with dog dander.Chat Icon

Re: dogs in stores

you see it a lot more in Manhattan where people bring their dogs for walks, then they end up shopping or getting a bite to eat. It doesn't bother me, but pet owners need to be respectful of the people around them.

Re: dogs in stores

I am not a fan of it at all. I don't really see the need to cart a pet around everywhere. They should never be allowed in grocery/food stores.

What bothers me more is that store policies are pretty vague. Stores need to decide what their policy is and clearly post it on all the doors and then enforce it. If they are going to permit pets, then they have to let non-pet carrying customers know this. If they are not going to permit pets, they need to let pet carrying customers know this when they are noticed and not when another customer complains (referring to the macy's thread).

It seems that we are in a day and age where common sense and courtesy needs to be spelled out since laws prohibiting texting while driving or letting moving your bags on the subway so someone else sit are necessary. I think this issue falls into that category.

There was just a post about this yesterday. IMO, I hate it. I am highly allergic to most dogs, and I do not want to sit my kids in the same shopping cart seat that was just occupied by a dog. Sorry, I mean no offense, but come on!

I don't think non-assistance dogs should be allowed in stores (except for PetCo, PetSmart, etc. for obvious reasons... Chat Icon )

I don't think it's sanitary, and many people have allergies.

I have a dog, and have had one my entire life (not the same one, of course... Chat Icon ). I would never think of bringing them into a store.

Plus, absolutely all dogs are wild animals, and will attack if pushed far enough. Luckily, most dogs never get close to that point, but ALL dogs have that point. I don't want to be in a store where I find out that someone's dog doesn't like the pitch of DC's voice, and that's what sets them off... Chat Icon

Re: dogs in stores

I do not agree with this at all, especially food stores. There is no need for it unless it is there to assist a disabled owner. I can see it more in the City, but on Long Island there is no reason to bring your dog to CVS. I'm sorry, I LOVE animals. Dogs are my FAVORITE. There is just no reason for it. Although, I also hate when people leave them in the car. Leave your dog home when you run your errands and take them out to play. Do you really think they enjoy shopping ???

Re: dogs in stores

I think it's gross. I don't want to put my stuff (or my kid) in a cart that just had a dogs butt in it and dog hair all over it. For all I know it just took a poop outside. I'm utterly disgusted by dogs in stores.

I was in Marshall's recently and a woman had her little fufu dog on a leash. The woman told her no dogs. So she goes outside and brings in a cart and puts the dog in the cart. Chat Icon

Well a lot will say their little dog is for their disability. Like they have a phobia of going out in public and that dog helps overcome that fear. I've read this several times on another board. Chat Icon

Re: dogs in stores

I live in Manhattan and there are dogs in almost every store, and not just the little ones either. I was in Bed Bath & Beyond this afternoon and saw at least several medium sized dogs. Personally, it doesn't bother me. I was just worried about hitting a dog with the shopping cart since it was so crowded today and they're hard to see if they're walking around and you have a full cart Chat Icon

I agree. They do it more in Europe, big dogs included, and a lot of the times they aren't on leashes, b/c they are so well trained (at least in Germany they were).

Re: dogs in stores

i have never done it... but if i were to, it would never be a food store. i have a maltese and there have been times i've been tempted... for example, i go once a week to the house we're buying to work on it for the day; i bring quinn. sometimes, on my way home i'll be like "oh crap, i need to buy a birthday card for so and so" or some other errand. and i think about running in with him (i'd carry him in my arms; he's 7 pounds). but i don't because i feel funny and don't want to get looks from other people. but it would make my life a little easier once in a while to not have to make a separate trip out... and i hate leaving him in the car; he gets too anxious. the longest i do it for is to run into the deli in the morning to buy a cup of coffee and even if he watches me through the window of the store, he still gets really upset.
so long story short, it'd be more convenient for me, but i don't do it.

I agree. Manhattan is more dog-friendly. It's hard to walk the dog, bring the dog home and then run back out to do your errands and store-owners are mindful of that. Just today, I was walking down Madison and saw two stores and two restaurants (outdoor seating) that had bowls of water and/or treats out for the doggies.

Driving your dog to a store for the sole purpose of having your dog by your side while you shop is different. I think it's idiotic.

Either way, if someone encountered me and my dog in a store and said they were allergic, I'd be more than willing to leave.

Re: dogs in stores

No, I think it's ridiculous. Dogs are not accessories or children. There is no need to tote them around when you go shopping. I have two 70 pound labs, they are super friendly, however I don't think most people would appreciate them giving kisses and getting their hair all over the place as much as I doChat Icon Why can't people be happy walking their dogs outdoors in parks?

I don't believe dogs belong in stores unless they are aiding the blind.
