Dog found question
My DH and I just found a dog wandering the street...it's sweet and definitely someone's pet. What in the world do we do?? We have been walking up and down the streets for the past few hours. I'm scared if we take it to the pound it will be put down but we can't keep it..any suggestions??

Dog found question
Start posting on Facebook pages associated with your town. I believe there's also a lost/found pet page for Nassau and Suffolk.

Dog found question
Tomorrow have it scanned at the vet, FB page, Craigslist (there are nuts in there get proof and even FB, get proof). Contact local rescues (email if they don't answer today but they probably will even though it's Sunday). The owners might be contacting them. Please take her/him in for the night. Just for the night until you can get a vet to scan and contact rescues to either take the dog or to see if any owners have called them. Please don't let it loose or take to a kill shelter. I have a contact at north shore who does in take. Let me know if you don't have any luck, I rather a local rescue but north shore is no kill. Thanks for helping this dog!! :)

Re: Dog found question
See if there is a post in craiga list for a lost dog. If not put one up. With minimal information. Hopefully you can keep him overnight and get him checked for a scan tomorrow.

Re: Dog found question
I found a dog not too long ago. I posted on local FB pages first. It was later at night, so I have him a bath and he spent the night in my dogs crate.
In the morning, I took him to local vet to be scanned for chip. Chip wasn't registered. I left my contact info there incase owners started looking. I called town of Islip shelter and they tried telling me it was illegal to hold the dog and that I had to turn him in. I refused bc I have heard bad things. Turns out, it wasn't illegal. They seem to tell everyone that. I gave them my info as well. Called the local precinct, left my info there. Put him up on all lost and found FB pages and started working with a friend who deals with a. Rescue for help as well. Went to groomers in the area and drove the neighborhood for 2 days - nobody knew him. He was with me 5 days and I was about to bring him to vet and then to his foster family my friend set up when someone told me they saw fliers up. Finally, his family was looking for him.
If you can hold onto him , please do. But if not, don't just drop at shelter or vet bc vet will give to shelter. Try calling who the PP mentioned for help. But in the meantime , FB, local precinct and shelter .. Leave your info for the family

Dog found question
Like a PP mentioned, I'd start by having it scanned by a vet. Hopefully the dog is microchipped. Check CL for any lost dog posts, call the local vets, groomers, shelters and leave your info in case the owners called looking for their dog. Try sharing pics on the local FB boards/groups, here are some FB sites I posted on when my cat Milo was missing:
https://www.facebook.com/Lostandfound.petslongisland?fref=ts https://www.facebook.com/groups/LINYSuffolkCountyLostAndFoundPets/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/1534364443481212/
You can also contact your town Patch and see if they'll post on their page. Hope you are able to find the pups owner!

Re: Dog found question
I agree with everything that previous posters said.
Also, it's a good idea to withhold some information if you reunite the dog on your own.
For example, if you post flyers, write something like "Describe the collar so we know the dog is yours."
Otherwise, some random person could just claim to own the dog.

Re: Dog found question
Any updates?
Great suggestions here -- WORST CASE SCENARIO: you try all of the above and after a week you still have nothing and absolutely can't hold him any longer, let me know and I will take him to my town's shelter which is NON-KILL and as long as the person who brings him in, which would be me, is a town resident, they will take him. So, since I am a resident I figured I would offer this to you as a "if all else fails" type of thing. I have had success twice before with taking dogs there who then got adopted out :)
Either that or my dog's Vet is the best and would probably take him in and then work on getting him adopted out. Either way.
Hope that helps!

Dog found question
See if any local radio stations make lost pet announcements. Out east they do.
Call all area vets to let them know and leave a good description of the animal. I'd take a picture and email it to them.
If you do get a response, ask questions to be sure the person truly is the owner. When I advertised a parrot I'd found, I got so many liars calling me to try to get a free bird.

Re: Dog found question
This is probably better as a spinoff, but I have a question for dog owners....
What is the reasoning for NOT having a dog's info on a collar?
In the past few weeks I have been in a situation twice where a dog was found and did not have a collar.
The first one was at work and I was able to borrow a leash from a coworker and sit out in front of the building and I was lucky the owner came looking about an hour later.
The second time the dog showed up at a party I was at, someone at the party found an open vet (4th of July weekend, not easy) and the dog was not chipped either. The vet gave them a leash and they were able to walk the dog around the neighborhood and the dog actually found her house several blocks away across a very busy road. This was after at least 3 hours and the owner had no clue .
Now I am not a "dog" person , but I like to think I am a decent person and would feel terrible if something happened to these guys. In both cases having the collar on the dog would have made things much easier.

There is no reason to not have info on a collar. It's irresponsible as a pet owner. My dogs have tags w name, address and 2 telephone numbers. I don't let them out without their collars on.

Dogs can get out of their collars. My dog did it twice before switching to a harness. Both times my dog got out of her collar it was while we were walking her. If she chose to run no one would know who she belonged to unless they had her scanned.

My dog always has her tags and collar on and I do use a harness but she still wears a collar. I have her ID tag, vaccine tag, chip tag and a tag that if someone scans it, you get the location of the scan. I'm a fanatic about this. It's my biggest fear. and thanks to Dani for offering to help!

Dog found question
thank you all so much! We feel so helpless. We kept the dog overnight and then my DH brought her to the No Kill animal shelter on Beltagh Ave in Bellmore. I have been going to all the local stores looking for a sign the owner may have put up. I posted it all over my facebook and have been looking everywhere to find the owner. If she is not picked up in 5-7 days someone can adopt her. My DH wants to but we just dont have the room. I feel so bad.

Our dog doesn't wear a collar. He's a Yorkie and it's bad for their trachea. When he goes for walks he wears a harness but we don't keep it on him when we're home.
eta- He also is the type of dog who wouldn't run away if you paid him. We could walk him with no leash and he wouldn't leave our side. He's never attempted to run out of the yard and has never 'run away'. If he were the type to do that, we would definitely find a way to keep our address/phone number on him.

Was she scanned? I hope you and your DH adopt her! You'd be surprised where she could fit...if you could find room in your heart, you could find room in your house/apt :)...you never know who will adopt her but if you do, you know she'll be safe and loved forever. There are HORROR stories out there. People even adopt mush dogs as bait dogs. Seriously.

Do you want to share the info here. We can all share it on our FB pages as well.
ETS: I think it's great you're doing all you can to make sure she will find her way home. Whether it be her old one or a new one. You have done a lot. Don't feel bad if you can't keep her! Having a dog is a big responsibility.
