Does this bother anyone else?

Does it annoy anyone when the kids on the block are yelling and screaming and playing basetball in the street?

I don't understand why they cant go to the school yard which is down the block to play, I have to worry about my cars being dented or my brand new landscaping being trampled.

Oh and the sound of the ball banging against the pavement. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

No, it wouldn't bother me at all. Actually, just reading that brought me back to my childhood, and all the neighborhood kids playing together in and around our houses. I guess its different if they're playing tag in your bushes or using your cars as bases, but just playing, it wouldn't bother me.

see when i was a kid, we would play and be respectful of other peoples property but now kids dont care, i once asked a kid to stop throwing a football, because he hit my car, and u know what he did, he laughed at me and threw it so much harder at my window of my car, when i threatened to call the cops, they laughed and said call them i'll tell them my dad says hi

stuff like that makes my blood boil,

No, wouldn't bother me. Can't you just park your cars in your driveway?? I love listening to kids playing and laughing, reminds me of what life is all about :)

Maybe you can just play some soft music to drown it out. Chat Icon

YIKES!! When I was a kid, we had a mean old neighbor who used to threaten to call the cops on us too Chat Icon I guess kids will never change. Try to be patient, i'm sure they don't mean to be disrespectful.

omg seriously?!?! see that would bother me..Some kids are just plain rude and disrespectful! I can't stand that!!! Sometimes when I take my dog for walks she barks at kids (usually they are riding a bike, etc) but they antagonize her more after, and do things purposely to piss her off..which I don't like. I've said things before and they make rude remarks..and these are 9 or 10 year old kids!

That sound of the basketball pounding against the pavement can get annoying, but it doesn't bother me that much. What does bother me is when kids run all over peoples lawns and property without permission when they are playing. It just makes me think of, what if they get hurt?, and then come after me because it's my property!

I love to see and hear the kids playing on our block its one of the things that attracted us to this neighborhood. We wanted a family friendly block. But I have to say the kids are respectful. If a ball goes in someones yard they ask to retrieve it. They stay off the lawns of others etc.

Re: Does this bother anyone else?

i think it's the kids being disrespectul that you don't like... (nobody would!)

I love the sound of any kids playing outside. i try and hush my girls when they go outside and screech and stuff.

I tell my friends that we have the most wonderful teenage boys that live across the street. they are a god send. once they accidentallly hit DHs car (parked in the street) and they came over and apologized, just that act, made us forgive the whole thing, plus it was such a little ding, who cares?

they play football, basketball, wiffle ball, they also play that hide and seek game at night... even though i am in bed and can hear them, i love it.

but, i am a HATER of video games. maybe that's why i love it so much.

It's really sad that today we have to think like this. Everyone is so "sue crazy." I actually felt really bad a few weeks ago when spring hit and our new neighbor's kids were playing outside, probably about 7 years old. I was by my window and the kids were playing with a big ball which bounced into our yard (there's no fence between us). They walked over to the edge of my property and just looked at the ball, so sad....Chat Icon it was the cutest thing i've ever seen. So I yelled out to them .... "goo.....go get it!!" LOL they were so cute when they ran across the lawn. I guess I just think kids are adorable but if you're not a kid person....it must get annoying.

Re: Does this bother anyone else?

I'm not a "kid person" per se but I was just thinking about this last night. There's a kid down the block who, when he plays, has to screech everything. Even normal sentences, he's screeching. Chat Icon I laugh now but I thought to myself, thank goodness he's not my next door neighbor. It's the kind of thing that grates on your nerves, especially when it's a nice day and the windows are open.

So I hear ya. If you're trying to read a book, or watch tv, and you have that as background noise, it can get a little much.

But I do try to remember what we were like as kids. I grew up in Levittown, there were families in almost every house on our block and we would play everything. Kickball, ringalevio, kick the can, hide and go seek, tag, etc. in the street, on our property, on everyone else's property. No one minded, no one complained. When it got dark, one by one the Moms would yell out the door that it's time to come in and we'd all say "Awww Mom! Ten more minutes pleeeeeease!" Chat Icon

If the kids are nice but just loud, I try not to let it bother me. If they are nasty, like that one kid was to you, I think about it more and what, if anything, could be done to make it better. Maybe you should go out of your way to introduce yourself to this kid's parents or try to strike up a friendship. I think, if this kid thought you were in cahoots with them, that he might think twice. Then again, if his parents are idiots, that won't help. Chat Icon

Re: Does this bother anyone else?

Growing up my neighborhood was super close and summer nights were spent playing manhunt across ALL yards. Everyone loved it. The kids in my parents' neighborhood now don't play manhunt but they do play outside all the time and it's what I expect to see. I do get annoyed when the kids on skateboards don't move out of the way when a car is coming, but I attribute that to the fact that they are teenagers who think they are being cool!

Now that we have our own house in our own neighborhood, there are kids out all the time which I think is great! However none of the houses immediately next to or across from us have kids.

It only bothers me if DD is sleeping or taking a nap and I am afraid she may wake up. But I don't mind otherwise. The kids on our block are all very polite. We lucked out for sure.

When I lived in seaford the kids were notorious for this, they used to actually hit the house with the hockey puck.. I fixed this problem by going to their houses and telling the parents to have the kids play in front of their house and the next time they hit my house with a hockey puck Im throwing it at them

Oh, the kids on my street! They play basketball and skateboard in the street all the time and they don't get out of the way when you drive by! I am always so scared I'll run into them, let alone that their ball will hit my car. They don't care, and their parents don't either. Chat Icon

Re: Does this bother anyone else?

That wouldn't bother me but I HATE when kids don't move out of the way when I'm driving. Or they just move a tad and then stare you down.

I just want to run their smug little assses over. Chat Icon

Then I remember when I was a kid and we were HUGE street players and used to actually yell at the cars.

THEN I remember that we were all good kids and kids today are hoodlums, and then I want to run them over even more.

Re: Does this bother anyone else?

My next door neighbors have a basketball net in their driveway and our houses are relatively close so I get to listen to the ball bouncing all night long since it doesn't get dark until later now. It's annoying. I just turn the TV up.

What irritates me is that the kids to the left of us are always running over our driveway to the kids to the right of us and our driveway is separated by river rock. SO, the kids kick the rocks everywhere and it's an inconvience to clean it up. Their parents don't make any effort to stop them or clean it up so I end up doing it.

It's frustrating b/c I don't want to cause any waves with my neighbors but, then again if I didn't want to deal with this I would still be living in my co-op. It's a trade off and kids will be kids.

Although, my parents would never let me do that!!!

I don't mind it. The school yards are not close, and as a mom, I would not feel safe about my own child playing there. The only thing that used to REALLY piss me off about my neighbors playing b-ball were the beer bottles and soda cans that I would find on my lawn pretty regularly. Chat Icon

that is a really cute story! I expect kids to act like kids but that does NOT mean complete disrespect for your neighbors property is just "being a kid". Or maybe it is and that's where their parents step in and lay some ground rules. I don't mind kids hanging out in the street - it's the running across yards, hitting cars with balls on purpose stuff that bothers me. They don't care of you have grass seed down or anything so I can see how that would be annoying, too.

And to continue my old fogie rant, I would not have ever considered running on my neighbors yards growing up. And is it so wrong for a kid to have a healthy fear of getting hit by a car? I don't mean that as a joke - don't parents want their kids to be in the habit of moving AWAY from moving vehicles?

I only mind when it's after 9p...then I'm like, 'where the heck are their parents?!'

Other than that...I don't mind, because I hope my kids will play in front of the house one day so I can keep an eye on them Chat Icon
