It's often hereditary but I don't believe anything causes it, I think you're just born with it.

I was told it was from weight gains and loss but I know a few people in the family that have it.

Im starting to think that's just something doctors say cuz they don't know the answer. I dont have weight issues (but I will soon) so they couldnt tell me that.

I think you are right because just today I was talking to a co-worker who is probably a perfect size 6 and looks healthy and she has it SO SO SO bad, she is on metformin and something else I forgot.

I'm a size 4 and have been my whole life. Weight can't be my issue. but no, I never got an answer. Just that I have always had an irregular period and that's it. I think it is just hormonal and you are born with it?

I believe there have been lots of study's but nothing concrete to say why. Most of the data shows that 1 in every 4 woman have it though and the most prevalent reason i thought i read was hormonal

I don't think you are so much born with it... I think it's more something that comes about with puberty... that's when all the hormones start increasing and going wacky, etc.
I think it's more something that develops due to hormonal issues.
I also believe it can be hereditary. 2 of my first cousins have it.
I think the only reason why the weight thing gets thrown out there is that weight can help control hormones or cause hormones to become wonky... but I don't necessarily think weight solely causes it. I'm positive there must be other contributing factors involved.
However weight issues are definitely a side effect of PCOS... one of the symptoms is weight gain and an inability to lose weight (or at least it tends to be very difficult to achieve weight loss).
Overall it's much more complex than just being all about weight.
