not all towns of LI have their "darksides" either...
eta...granted a lot do have good an bad areas...
but there are def areas that are BAD point blank, Good point blank and the majority are a mix

what I meant about darkside is the drugs and crime. All towns have it. You just dont hear about it that much cause the school boards keep it hush hush. No, I didnt mean that the houses are going down literally, I mean that people are ignorant and make a stupid comment about when a race other than white may move in that thier property value has just decreased, its a racial comment that my neighbor made and I was angry and just ignored him and walked away.

what Im saying is that KellyFG's comment about racially diverse giving a town a bad rap is true. I dont think many people would move to my town but go to the westbury schools, thank goodness Im in the east meadow which is racially diversed, but westbury I heard is very dangerous.

hazel...you certainly are the section 8 expert then. I will admit I don't know anything about welfare or know anyone on it. Name a blue collar, middle class neighborhood on LI & someone will know of a section in that town of "bad apartments" or whatever.
Thank you for educating all of us. I stand corrected.

Sorry, I mentioned it. I personally don't know any "bad" areas in my town. There might be a house or 2 but no "bad" streets.
I am not an expert on section 8 but do know quite a few people that have been on welfare from my dh's side and I know the bad side to it.

one important thing to remember is this. Their is good and bad in every area. There are many things to look at when moving into an area, SD, resale, etc. I think as far as SD are concern remember elementary schools are based on neighborhoods, so if you are in better neighborhood that is where your kids will be. However and this is only my thoughts i believe how you raise your children in regards to schooling counts alot. Good or bad school district if you dont take action and give your children a good foundation at home then it really doesn't matter where you live.

I went to sachem which was always thought of as great, high taxes, housing is expensive, but I really do not think it was that great.

Good luck!

I went to Sachem and have lived in Holbrook my entire life. I have to say that I don't think there are any "bad" areas of Holbrook. Yes, there are "bad" houses and families but not a whole block like in some towns.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?

ok.....I have to step in here. I work at Longwood HS, and I have to say people give it a really bad reputation. No it is NOT th ebest, but it is FAR from the worst. It has won many awards especially the Elementart schools.
I grew up and went to Northport a very good district.
My mom used to work in the school and tells me these stories, and say say "WHAT"..no way that NEVER happens in Northport.
No matter what school you go to now it is NOT like it used to be.
I dont know why, but this have certainly changed, and there are MANY bad things that go on in the very good districts in good ares such as Miller Place and Mt. Sinai (we never hear aboyt it) because if it got out....you would have very angry parents. Parents that pay high taxes and things are done to MAKE THEM happy.
So please....DONT bash Longwood. I know it is not the best school, but it is NOT as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?

I just think on here anyway, whenever anyone bashes a school district or area, it happens to be a very diverse one. Its something to notice. Im not saying Im right, just noticed it happened a LOT.

I know my neighbors bash Babylon school districts all the time, saying they are glad they are in Lindenhurst because the schools are better. In truth they arent better, but they are an almost all white school. I think theres truth behind that that people dont want to see...or admit.

Oh course I could be wrong, I dont claim Im right.

I know my own knowledge of Longwood that its not a bad school district at all. I wouldnt mind my kids going there.

But as Jenn I think pointed out, Centereach for example used to be a horrible town, overall considered a very poor neigborhood with poor growth. It was very run down as early as maybe 5-6 years ago and shes right that it has turned around considerably...and is not at all the place it used to be. Many towns have the same potential and potential has to be considered, because I think Ridge is a town that has turned around a LOT in time.

EVERY town has to be looked at in depth and not based on some small populations of peoples opinions...

i am not saying that holbrook is bad at all, what i am saying is sachem always got a good reputation but it was not all that it was cracked up to be.

I think it really depended on the class. My class was not too bad (or at least I didn't think so-lol!). There is bad everywhere and you won't escape the "bad" kids but there is a difference between good and bad neighborhoods. I can tell you a few places that I would NEVER live.

Its nice to hear some more input from other people, some of whom know where I'm coming from. My feeling about Long Island & life in general is
"there is an a$$ for every seat" LOL
I found mine, hopefully everyone that is house hunting will find theirs.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?

After reading through this entire post, I just wanted to add my two cents worth, also as a resident of Ridge. As many people here have stated and whatever your opinion is, there are always going to be some areas , perhaps, depending on your perspective, that may not be considered good in a neighborhood. That said, I LOVE where I live! I love my neighborhood and also know people that teach at Longwood at have good things to say about the district. Now, for my point....and something to think about....
the cost of living on Long Island is getting higher and higher, in some areas for newly married couples living in apartments, its hard to even come up with the cost for a down payment. I grew up in what is considered a very wealthy area and honestly, once I got married could not afford to buy a home in that area. What I am trying to say here is that for people that want to own a home that is still somewhat affordable coming to a town like Ridge is a good idea. You can still get a beautiful home for good money. The school may not be the best on Long Island but it is good and think about it...if more and more people in similiar situations are moving into the area, eventually it will be all of those families children that will be in the school district. Ridge has changed just in the few short years I have lived here but I can tell you I see more couples like my husband and I moving in all the time....recently married, no children and looking for a nice home....five, ten years from now, I know this area will change even more as new construction is going for nearly $500,000 and I know I purchased a home in a nice area that I could realistically afford. It's not for everyone but I also think you need to be looking at a lot of different aspects...just my opinion...as far as this area people are talking about I live here and do not even know what you are referring to in Ridge....I've lived here for 5 years...also, I live across the street from a new development --technically in Wading River, where homes are going for $750,000-$1.5 million--literally I am just a few blcoks away....it's all your perspective though and what you are looking for.....

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?

My MIL and 2 SILs live there - they like it a lot. You can get a good deal on a house too - more for your $. Personally I wouldnt move there bc the commute for me is too far but they like it a lot and they havent had any problems with the schools.
