I don't have much experience but the only people I have known to live in Ridge, lived in Section 8 housing.
Wow hazel...I've never even met anybody that was on section 8 in my 36 yrars of life on LI, maybe you should pick the people you "have known" better. I did hear that this house was available as a section 8 rental though low class house in ridge
The absolute negativity & snobbiness of people on this board really surprises me. I have yet to see anyone here living in Jericho or any other place the TRULY has an excellent school district or any area that actually exceeds a middle class standard of living. I can agree that not everyone "likes" or thinks highly of the same towns but being RUDE after people already said they live there is like saying someones baby is ugly after they posted a picture. I gotta tell you, my "trashy section 8 neighbors on the BAD, south side of the lake" have WAY more class than some of you "ladies". Sorry to hijack your post WoodIam.
Oh, and she was LOOKING for a home. She does not already live there. I was responding to HER, not to anyone else on the board.

I TOTALLY believe that they would have this as a section 8 house. My dh's family lived in bigger houses that I have ever lived in while they were on welfare. They have more things than the middle-class family has.

hazel...you certainly are the section 8 expert then. I will admit I don't know anything about welfare or know anyone on it. Name a blue collar, middle class neighborhood on LI & someone will know of a section in that town of "bad apartments" or whatever. Thank you for educating all of us. I stand corrected.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
one important thing to remember is this. Their is good and bad in every area. There are many things to look at when moving into an area, SD, resale, etc. I think as far as SD are concern remember elementary schools are based on neighborhoods, so if you are in better neighborhood that is where your kids will be. However and this is only my thoughts i believe how you raise your children in regards to schooling counts alot. Good or bad school district if you dont take action and give your children a good foundation at home then it really doesn't matter where you live.
I went to sachem which was always thought of as great, high taxes, housing is expensive, but I really do not think it was that great.
Good luck!

Kelly... they only person who is being ridiculous is YOU. But guess what, this thread isn't about YOU. It was about Joanne asking for opinions...
You just don't seem to think other people should have them...
NOBODY was being rude here...
Only you being overly defensive...
YOU ASK ME IN FM for what i thought and what i was told... I TOLD YOU... GET OVER IT or don't ask people questions you can't handle...
I could have been a bit more explicit on WHY i do not like that area but i do NOT want to be RUDE.
IMO YOU thinking that the reason why a SD isn't desirable because of its diversity was RUDE, IDIOTIC and just plain PATHETIC...

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
The bottom line is that people are gonna disagree on areas. EVERYONE is gonna defend the area they live in or they are looking to live in, and if you disagree with them, well this is what happens.
So I think these boards are NOT good for getting real opinions of any area, because personal feelings get involved.
I like Ridge...yes I would say in my own opinion that its about 60/40, with at least 40% of the area being less the desirable, BUT I dont agree that LongWood is that bad of a school district. 5 of my cousins went there and about 4-5 friends and they all did fine.
I DO think peoples opinions of school districts go down when they are diverse. ITs obvious...
People always look at schools liek Massapequa, Connetqout, etc as better schools, and the bottom line is they are all white schools and they are NOT better.
As far as school districts go..also keep in mind things change. I know I think more of the Jr. Highs and High Schools that concern me, and Im at least 15-16 years away from having to use them, so I cannot judge an area on school district so much because Im not looking for that as a MAJOR part of where to buy. I may not be in a home in 15 years in the area I buy now.
Good luck in your search!!

Sorry Donna but i would like you to find someone who thinks badly of a SD just because it is diverse... Because said people are just going to have to leave LI... ALL schools are pretty much diverse now. Yes some more than others....
But the reason why people do not like some SD are because of the drop out rates, the violece, the crime and the drugs....
THOSE are the issues that seem to be of importance...
If diversity was....well then i guess you would see people home schooling cause ALL schools are becoming more and more diverse every year
AND you do get opinions by asking. There is a thread about Centereach on NFR...ddn't see the defensiveness or the accusations like this one has...
You certainly can get honest opinions...
But if you can handle hearing opposing views people should READ then
The whole purpose of these boards is for opinions and advice... people got to learn to be able to handle that.. But there is good info to be shared...

I posted state statistics to support my feeling that the elementary school in Ridge is AVERAGE & is wrongly assumed to be BAD. I don't have a problem with diversity, I'm the one that lives here REMEMBER? I stated my opinion as to why it gets a bad rep...if you don't agree thats fine. Other people mentioned a low income housing area as "not the highest class place" that happens to be very diverse, and I'm sure houses low income families. If your husband grew up here in the last 20 years he knows that when Calverton Grumman closed LOTS of people here lost their jobs & homes to foreclosure & there were alot of rentals, which in turn brought in a "less desirable" element. That has changed, my specific neighborhood has appreciated almost 400% since the early 90's, that is a fact. Certainly that is unusual & proves that the area is on an upward climb. I asked specific questions to you in FM & you gave me NOTHING but the same vague BS you posted here. Don't play yourself, I can handle it & I did ask for it. Your rudeness is apparent so don't be shy. I apologized to Joanne & she acknoledged that, but since this is an open forum I though adults, homeowners and parents that have successfully raised children to college age like myself could discuss/debate this topic. Apparently I was wrong. Again good luck to you, I'm sure your new home will be in the highest ranked district on LI with no bad section or low class people & you will live happily ever after.

I couldn't agree more. Its funny you mentioned Connetquot, which is the district my son graduated from. We had a terrific elem & mid school experience there but the high school was another story. Several of the seniors missed graduation because they were in rehab, a few of the MOTHERS I knew through PTA were in rehab & lots of the girls were addicted to vicodin according to my son. Its hard to find any write ups about that anywhere and I'm not saying its a bad district because of my sons personal experience.
As far as the diversity debate goes Long Island is notorious for being Anti-diverse...something members of minority groups have complained about & sued realtors over for years with good reason.
If this aint a rude and presumptuous comment, i don't know WHAT is!
again I back that comment...go ahead & say I'm the one being negative & rude...when I'm the one that moved OUT of an almost ENTIRELY white community(Oakdale) into RIDGE. It blows my mind how you can twist well known feeling on Long island (that people like to sweep under the rug)into something negative about me.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Ridge?
ERod just called my statement rude. This place is so damn reminescent of brides brawling over their DJs....people can't discuss things and disagree without attacking & getting their panties bunched. I don't care if people decide not move here or if people don't like it....I know why I picked the area & love my choice. If I came off as overly defensive my actual tone got lost through the keyboard, I was trying to have an adult conversation & LEARN why my town is thought poorly of from the people that claim to know. Oh well. On to bigger & better things.

I have to agree with you 110%. As a teacher in Longwood, I have to tell you that support from home is in direct correlation with student achievement. Longwood has some wonderful programs and has students that have made outstanding achievements. The Middle school has gotten the national award for a School of Excellence. Longwood does have a lot to be proud of. As far as the problems, yes it has it's share. Would I be nervous sending my own children there- probably. As I would be sending them anywhere. As some of the other posters have stated- everywhere has it's ups and downs, depending where you look.

I hate to say this , and Im not one of them since I am not all "white"- Im 1/2 Puerto Rican and got a ton of flack from kids while I was growing up in an all white SD, but she is right when she says that MOST of LI does not like racially diverse. You as a realtor have to def see or hear it. I know when I lived in Wantagh there was actually a ban( my mom did RE when I was a kid thats how I know of this) and go to SD 23 they would go to Mac or Island trees for any African Americans to move in the neighborhood b/c you hear it all the time- Oh if someone who is black moves on your block the house values go down! Its very sad but so very true! I just heard it the other day when a neighbor put their house up for sale here in Westbury in the Birchwood section of Salisbury, I couldnt believe my ears. All towns on LI have their darksides.

i respect your opinion but def disagree with you. maybe some of those things happened and were said in the past...and it is sad. But LI is becoming a melting pot...most places already are. My grandmother lives in Jericho, which was predminently white when i was young... ISN"T ANYMORE.... and nobody is sayign that the house prices have gone down lately
all areas are diversifying...so i guess a lot of people are or will be leaving LI, cause there will be no where to go.
