does anyone have a problem with their newborn not pooping?

DS is 2 weeks old, and last week went from pooping every diaper change to only going once a day (in a 24 hour period). I can tell that he's pushing and he passes alot of gas, but no poop. I have used the thermometer to stimulate him and even that doesn't seem to work. The pediatrician said to use the thermometer and that some kids don't go for a day or two. I am not sure what else to do, or how common this is. Anyone have experience with this??

We actually have the opposite issue, however the ped did tell us that is very normal for them to skip a day or 2 of bowel movements (and this is also how it was for my other 2 DC's...this baby is the reverse)

I would try to only maybe use the thermometer if he seems to be having discomfort so he doesnt get used to relying on that to goChat Icon

Since day 1 dd only pooped about once every other day and sometimes once every 2 days. When she was about 2 weeks she hadn't gone in 4 days and I had to bring her to the dr. He used his finger to stimulate her but said it is common for some kids to not go every day and that you really shouldn't worry until after 4 days. Now at almost 4 months she goes once a day to once every other day. This is normal for HER

I think it is very normal. I do know though that if it seems like they are trying to go and seem in pain (but not constipated) they may need their rectal band checked to see if it needs to be stretched. (My ped had to do that for my DD.)

DS is the same way. My ped said it is fine, every baby is different. The only thing to worry about is red black or white poop!

I was going to ask as well. BF babies tend to go more in the beginning, but some babies don't go much at all. It is not uncommon for a baby to go 5 days without pooping. As long as the baby is not uncomfortable I would not worry about it. Were you a c-section? You might also want to try probiotics.

YUP - SInce BM is all the good stuff...the body takes what it needs of it (ALL of it) and often doesnt need to leave the body...so it is normal to not poop for many days! As long as your baby is not uncomfortable

As long as your baby isn't in pain i wouldnt worry. My DD used to poop 1 time a day and thats it. That was her "norm"

at 2 weeks my son was down to once a day - by 1 month -he started only going once a week - he was bf and it is perfectly fine for bf babies to go only once a week because bm is so efficient in there systems

YESSSS!!! totoally normally and yes this sounds shocking but newborns can go up to 10 days without a bm movement the first months thier digestive systems are learning , thier bellies are very immature... they will grow out of it ds stopped with the constant straining aand gas around 3 months.... unless they are screaming in pain dont do anything different just wait for the POOP , to relieve gas for lo do baby massages move thier legs to thier stomach and enjoy the ride Chat Icon Chat Icon
