Does anyone else's infant not know how to soothe themselves to sleep?
Derek can only fall asleep while drinking a bottle or while I am walking him around the house in the stroller. At 5 months old next week the stroller thing is getting old. Tonight he drank a bottle and fell asleep (he has been going down for the night around 7:30) and as soon as I put him down he woke up. He was fine for a little while and than started crying. He doesnt want anymore bottle and was screaming when I tried rocking him. He also doesnt like binky's. Do I just let him fuss and cry to fall asleep? Or should I bring him downstairs and walk him around in the stroller?

My DD is not a great sleeper, and between 5-6 mos I decided that it was time to CIO, as long as I knew they were clean and had a full belly I would put in crib and close the door and not return even when she cried. (Unless it sounded abnormal and was concerned for safety) It was a bad few nights (crying up to 1+ hours) but then she got it. She is 9 mos now and she may cry for 30sec to a minute when shes put down but she does go down and I usually don't have to go up till early morning.

Can you put him in the swing? Maybe the motion will help, and still free you up

He will scream in the swing too.
Other than walking him in the stroller and drinking a bottle the only other time he falls asleep on his own is in the car.

My 14 month old can't. He goes to bed with a bottle. Bad habit...I know but I am not really a CIO mom so I'll deal with it eventually. Right now I just need some sleep. He still doesn't sleep through the night.

DS is 10m old and we still rock, cuddle or feed him to sleep. I don't have the heart to CIO. He's a good sleeper once he is sleeping but he doesn't soothe himself.

we apparently have the same child. I am finding it very difficult these days. even worse, i will feed him in the stroller so he stays asleep. it's a nightmare!

i know a lot of moms don't like CIO ....but i agree with this post. it usually works if you are committed and consistent.
so if you are desperate ,give it a try...you might wait a few weeks if you want. i am starting to do it with my DS who is over 6 months now, but he uses a binky and once he finds it, he's good to go. so that makes it easier to do CIO. i did CIO with my DD at a younger age and i believe it made her into the great sleeper she is today. i personally prefer doing CIO when they are young-not too young but not too old either where they know more and can even call out for mommy! i don't think there is anything wrong with teaching your child good sleep habits. good sleep habits to me are as important as good nutrition you know? think of it that way. if you do CIO and it takes 3 days or so and it works out, it will be worth it. what are the chances your DS will remember doing CIO at 6 months or so? he won't.
good luck in whatever you choose to do! i know how hard it is!

Neither of my DC's can ( DS is 4 and we still have to lay with him !)...DD still needs to be rocked and she is a year...

My 11 month only falls asleep on the boob! I am also not a CIO mom so I deal!

We are in the same boat...DS will be 5 months old next week & we still cuddle, lay with him & rock him to sleep. Once he is asleep though, he sleeps for a good 10 hours solid. I know it is a bad habit but I feel like especially for DH (he puts him to bed on most nights) that this is their bonding time.
I do find it to be a hassle during the day for naps though as I am the one that has to cradle & rock him to sleep. Then to make matters worse, he will not nap if you put him down once he is fast asleep. I get stuck holding him for sometimes 1-1.5 hours

dd was like that till about 6 months when we started to let her cry a little. It surprisingly wasn't as bad as I thought, I would go in every few minutes and only pick her up if she was really crying a lot. and after just 2 or 3 times she no longer expected to be picked up and rocked and did great falling asleep on her own. now she may cry for a minute, sometimes not at all and falls right asleep. After 6 months of her falling asleep on the boob or being rocked I thought it would never happen!!
