Does anyone else's DC have a meltdown if you bring them in from outside?

As soon as the weather gets nice, even during the winter on the warmer days, DC loves to be outside. But as soon as I bring him in, he has a meltdown and screams at the door. I have to get special locks b/c he knows how to open it now and will just unlock it and walk outside Chat Icon We were just at the park for over an hour, you would think he would be exhausted. But no, he wants to stay outside. Even if I take him shopping and bring him in the from the car, he wants to stay outside.

I've just been letting him cry for a couple of minutes and than try to divert his attention to something else. I love being outside too, but obviously can't be for 8 hours a day Chat Icon

I'm right there with ya! I feel bad, but like you said, you can't spend 8 hours a day outside.

Um, right here! Every single time!!!!

Ry is 3, and LOVES the outside. He loves to run, climb, play, jump, you name it, he just loves to be outside. He could be out there for an entire day and STILL cry and scream when he has to go in.

What do you do when they do this? Just let them cry and ignore them? Try to get them interested in something else?

DS does this, although he has gotten better about it since he first started going outside semi-regularly, probably in March. I remember he laid down in the doorway one day and kicked and screamed.

I try to lure him in with something he likes--a favorite toy, a visit down the basement (he loves playing down there too), or a snack. If those things don't work and he cried, I tell him I'm soryr we can't stay outside, but we need to be inside now. Then I ignore him. He usually stops pretty quickly.

sometimes. before he starts we try to distract him in the house. like, lets go play with your trains or elts go see the kitty, etc.. that works most of the time. if he does cry, i ignore it.

Oh yeah, just witnessed one 5 min's ago. I ignore it, but I try to re-direct his attention. usually I find something he can do inside to "help" me, and try to get his attention away from outside....

Re: Does anyone else's DC have a meltdown if you bring them in from outside?

I could have written this. DS has had cabin fever for the past 2 months. He will run for the door if he hears it opening. He comes to get my hand and drags me to the door to get out.

I never have problems taking him for errands (well, untill we hit the stores). I ask him if he was to go out and go to the car. He zooms out of anywhere in the house and is by me in 2 seconds.

Now if I take him out of the swing in the backyard....oh my!!!!! I'd better find another diversion if I decide to take him back inside. I take him out before a meal, etc.. That way I can tell him "let's go get some milk" or "do you want to eat some cheerios?". Works everytime!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I completely ignore him...

I dont even try to divert his attention onto something else until he has stopped his temper tantrum.

I could have written this myself about DS. If he even suspects DH or I are going to go outside, he runs to get his shoes and says "I go too! I go outside!". Then when it's time to go outside, you'd think it was the end of the world. We usually just let him cry for a few minutes and then try to distract him. He gets over it pretty quickly.

Re: Does anyone else's DC have a meltdown if you bring them in from outside?

Give him some warnings when time is winding down..."you have 5 more minutes" or "we can kick the ball 6 more times" then we have to go inside. But give him a reason to go inside. Lure him with his favorite toy or whatever he likes to do...color, play, etc.

My kids love to help me in the kitchen, so the routine is usually "OK...in 5 minutes we have to go inside and I have a job for each of you to help make dinner. Once we are inside and everyone has washed their hands, I'll give you your special cooking job." Chat Icon

i have to use his paciChat Icon i give him a 5 min warning and as soon as its time to leave, i tell him to help me clean up our stuff, i then give him the paci and get him into the car quick LOL (we go to the park as i live in a condo and dont have a backyard). At families houses, we try to re-direct him to get him inside with either food or their animals (he loves dogs and cats LOL-so we'll say oh lets go pet the...).

DD is exactly the same way. She has loved being outside since she was a baby and can stay outside all day. She throws a tantrum when it's time to come in. Usually I'll try to lure her in with a cookie..maybe a bad habit to get her into but many times it works.

Jack does this everytime. I try to have something fun for him to come in to. (Yogurt shake, milk, watermelon) He would stay outside all day if I let him!

My 2 are fine when it comes to coming in from outside *but* Ava will freak out when I say its time to leave the park.

I feel like a bad mom but now we just don't go - its not worth the battle.

The only thing that semi works is saying we're going home to do something - have a snack, go see Daddy, etc.

My DS does this EVERY time we come inside. Nothing is getting done in my house b/c we are outside from the time we get home in the evening until bath and bed time. I have to resort to bribery with fruit snacks or yogos or something that he LOVES. Chat Icon
