Does anyone commute from Smithtown to Nassau daily?
Anyone here commute from Smithtown area to Western Nassau County? What time do you leave? Do you hit traffic and at what point on the expy do you hit it? We want to have an idea of how the commute is (mostly LIE) in the am.
Any other details would be great.

Re: Does anyone commute from Smithtown area to NHP/Lakeville Estates area daily?
I used to commute from Lake Grove to Marcus Ave about 8 yrs ago. I left around 8am and it would take me over an hour via NSP. I would imagine the commute hasn't gotten any shorter.

well, I work close to where we live, but I can tell you from the stray days that I have been forced to commute to either dix hills, or points west from port jeff, that you need not only factor in the LIE, but also traffic TO the LIE. The southbound trip, depending upon your location, can be a real pain in the @ss, since most N/S roads are only 1 or 2 lanes, and covered with traffic lights...
If you're relatively close to a good N/S artery (like the sagtikos) you'll be in a much better position than if you have to take 111....

Right! I meant to ask that.
Do the roads to the LIE crawl or just move slowly? And are there shortcuts?
What time does traffic really build up on roads to LIE? 8 am? 7am? Tell me more whoever can! thanks

It depends on where in smithtown.
You know where those gov't buildings are just east of the end of northern state? Old willet's path is a small n/s road that runs from 347/454 to points north (such as 25) over there, and I know it's a 'secret shortcut' for some smithtown / st. James commuters.

I live in Commack and if I leave after 7:05AM I am totally screwed.. I live right near the Sag so it takes me about 35- 40 minutes door to door and I am going to Marcus Ave via NSP. I usually leave at about 6:40 and get there at like 7:10-7:15 ish on a really good day!!

How is the Sunken Meadow (Sagtikos) heading South in the am? That is my next question.
And coming from Smithtown, how is the traffic on 25A going North in the am?
Would it make sense to take 25A North to the Sunken Meadow, as opposed to 111 South to the LIE?
Is it safe to say that having to be at work earlier, such as 8am, is better than having to be in at 9:00?
Thanks so much!
It's definitely better to take the Sunken Meadow in the morning from 25A. Also, I think the earlier you leave the better.
I leave Nesconset at 6 am and there is no traffic. But I have to be at work at a little after 7 (I am not going as far as you though- only to eastern Nassau).

Re: Does anyone commute from Smithtown area to NHP/Lakeville Estates area daily?
To give you perspective, I leave at 8 am from Smithtown to go to Union Turnpike in Queens (exit 23) northern state/grandcentral. I get there at 8:45 am (45 minutes). I actually live in Middle Island and my work base is Smithtown but I travel frequently to queens. I have timed it several times from Smithtown though. I found the northern parkway to be faster than the LIE. From Middle Island, it takes me 1 hour and 10 minutes.
I haven't done the commute in the Winter, so you may want to consider that as well.
In my opinion, depending where you live, it takes forever to get to the Sunken Meadow (Sagitkos). I work near 111 and 25/25 a (main street in smithtown) and I take 111 south to 347 W and that turns into the Northern State.
ETA: Have you considered living in Kings Park? That is also a nice area

Do does this Old Willet's path move or crawl? I see it on the map.

Re: Does anyone commute from Smithtown area to NHP/Lakeville Estates area daily?
this I don't know.... becuase I only used it once or twice during the rush hour....
I can give you some advice about devising a commuting routine, though....
pick out several different paths with mapquest, and when you're going home, take a new one each day. It will become really clear which one is the most efficient within a week! This is what I did when I began commuting to brookhaven labs several years ago, and it worked like a charm

Re: Does anyone commute from Smithtown area to NHP/Lakeville Estates area daily?
I go from Hauppauge to Syosset (about 20 - 40 min depending on the day/weather) now but used to live in Kings Park and travel to Garden City (30 -60 min). So here's my perspective:
- the Northern State is almost always better than the LIE unless there is a accident. - 111 is generally pretty bad at rush hours - The Sag/Sunken Meadow is fine to get the No State in the am and home in the pm - All the side roads even Jericho can be good on bad weather days especially (as long as there are no accidents) - leaving earlier is always better - unless you can leave after 9 am
I agree about trying some routes out once you figure out where you are living to find your best option.
