Re: Do you think we're crazy?
My in-laws' basement looks just like that w/the pole right in the center. They do have carpeting, but I keep bumping my head on the huge heating duct attached from the ceiling!!!!

Re: Do you think we're crazy?
Kathy - these pics are priceless. If you have the time, patience and the money - I would totally go for it. It seems like a house you can be in for many many years...and the best part is you can make it your own!

Re: Do you think we're crazy?
Yes actually the 70's house is MUCH bigger!! Well...that being said we DO have tenants so we only really get to use 1/2 of our house. Our total house now is 4BR, 2 bath, 2 LRs, 2 DR, garage and laundry.
The 70's house has 5 BR (all which are the same size or bigger), bigger DR, bigger LR, 2 full baths, attic, 2 car garage, shed and a HUGE HUGE basement with one side the lovely retro rec room, the other is a laundry room and the back is a HUGE shop that is 35ftx16ft! Its huge!. The kitchen is even 2 feet bigger. Everything is bigger but you wouldnt think so by looking at it.
The property where we live is .21 acre and the other house is .26 and the taxes are LOWER (go figure)!!

Re: Do you think we're crazy?
Kathy, since it is bigger and you guys did such a great job with your house you should definitely take the plunge and do it. Do the work slowly and at your own pace and I am sure you will feel that you have made the right decision!

Re: Do you think we're crazy?
will you get your Aunts house for a better price (less than if it was sold on the market)? Will your house sell for more than what you paid (since you did a lot of upgrades)? Will your morgage stay the same but you'll have a bigger home? Is your Aunts home is as nice as area within the town?
I'm sure you have answered all these questions to yourself already. Good Luck

Re: Do you think we're crazy?
Sounds good. I'd do it if I were you. When would you need to purchase the new home? Could they wait until you sold your home first? Youo DO NOT want to do a bridge loan my SIL got stuck in a situation and has to do that... major points up front. Granted she's in Wisconsin but her mortgage payment just more than tripled... FIL had to float her some money until her first house sells, they are having difficulty.
Just keep in mind that the taxes willl be reassessed so they might not stay that low.

Re: Do you think we're crazy?
Well, the purchase of the new home would not be contingent on the sale of our existing home. Luckilly wehave enough equity in our home now that we can get pre-approved for most of the mortgage and then take out a small HE loan on our house and pay that off with the proceeds from the sale of our exising house.
Supposedly the taxes are the true and current taxes.
MOney would be really tight for a few months until we closed on both houses...
We still havent made any firm decisions yet. This is so nerve wracking!

Yes, we bought our house in 2000 and it has appreciated in value over the years. The mortgage will be lower on the new house! and the house we're considering is in the same town that we live in now - and both grew up here...plus its a dead end street!
Oh boy... Girls thanks for your help and advice!!!

Oh wait I forgot the BEST picture...check out the bathroom - WITH THE BACK DOOR!!!!!!!!!
I know someone with a bathroom with a back door.... it is PERFECT for pool parties. They have a pool and the kids (or anyone else for that matter) do not have to go dripping wet though the house to use the Loo!
I say go for it, the extra space, no rental and property and location alone make it worth it for me! All the other stuff is cosmetic and you and your DH will do a gorgeous job in due time.

That's exactly what they did - they used to have a pool so they used that door into the bathroom. Now, no more pool but we still have a door in the bathroom.
I think we might do it...but we have a little more to discuss. OMG...I havent slept in days

Re: Do you think we're crazy?
Kathy - I would go for your aunt's house. It is bigger and on a nicer street. I know it really s@cks to have to finish one house to move into another that needs a lot of updating but in the long run, it would probably be better. Your current house is gorgeous so you won't have any problem selling. You also have to love the fact that you won't have any tenants. Just think how nice the bigger house, dead end street and no tentants will be when your a mommy.

Those pictures are great!
I understand your hesitation - there would be a lot of work ahead of you if you move. But, in the end it sounds like you'll be much happier! I say go for it!

Re: Do you think we're crazy?
Kathy! First of all, I love how you decorated your current house- it's gorgeous!
I agree, it sounds like a no brainer to move to your aunt's house- there are so many pros- it's bigger, dead end street, less mortgage and no tenants.
The only cons are that it is a PIA to move and pack, and you have to do the cosmetic fixing up again. But, your DH is very handy and there is no "rush" to do the cosmetic stuff....
Short term, it's a pain. But long term, you'll be paying less money for a bigger home that you WILL make as beautiful as your current one.
I say, go for it and congratulations!!

I told DH I posted here (because he's having reservations too...) and he was like "Well what did they all say on LIF?" So I told him ...and well, we're going for it!
OMG....I get dizzy every time I think about that new house and how much work it needs!!

Holy cow - congrats!!! It really seems like a good decision --- even though there will be more work in the short-term...the long-term results are undeniable! Good luck - keep us posted!

Kathy, that's great!!!! How can you beat it - lower mortgage payments, no rental, dead end street, more room... It's a no brainer
You guys will have fun fixing up the house the way you want it too! I have to say, when I saw the picture of the basement I actually said "oh no!" I think you should keep that - you know, as a shrine to the way things were
