Do you read to your child?

And/or do you like receiving books for your dc as a gift?

Dh and I are huge readers and we read to our dd nightly. For birthdays and holidays I always buy a present and a book for my nephew and cousin who are under 1. I never thought anything of it till my friend pointed out that maybe they aren't readers and the book is getting tossed aside which is a huge possibility. Thoughts.

Yes; DS is only 12 months but I read to him; and he has a large collection of books. That was the theme of my shower so everyone bought books for him. He loves flipping the pages and looking at the pictures.

Yes!! Books are one of my fav gifts for the boys. It's educational, something you do together, doesn't take up tons of space and something you never get tired of. DS will get into a certain book that we have to read every night for a month. When he's tired of it or we get a new book he will read that one for a month. Of course we read a few a night.

Friends of ours for the last couple of bdays for the boys buys them a book and GC to Barnes and noble. We love going to the store too, looking around, reading books there then picking one out to take home.

DD has a whole bookshelf of books. Every morning I think that will be the day I start reading to her, but then the day escapes me. I want to read to her.
I know it's never too early to start. One day we will start to break in those books.
If we get books for Christmas they will be appreciated, even if they just sit for a bit.

DS is only 8 weeks and I've been reading to him for a while. We have one book that I read him as part of his bedtime routine - it may not mean much now but I just picture him being able to recite the book by heart one day I also occasionally read other books to him.

I am a huge reader, and some of my earliest memories are of my parents reading to me. I want more books and welcome books as gifts from everyone!

im not a big reader, but i started read to dd when she was about a month old
i want her to enjoy books and reading so i figure if we do it young maybe she will like it - who knows
i do enjoy receiving books as gifts - they take up less space then toys

every night we read several books. and sometimes during the day when we are home. i love when he gets books as gifts because they are usually books i haven't thought to get him or maybe never heard of. plus, it's always good to have a large selection to chose from, even if he wants to read the same 3-4 every night for a week!

All the time! I started when she was one month and by the time she was a few months old we were reading tons of books every day. We used to read a whole bin of board books every night before bed and by the time DD was a year she already knew the words to a bunch of them. Like others, I love getting them as gifts since they don't take up much room and DD loves them. I would hope that whether or not someone is into reading themselves they will still read to their children.

Just started to. Before now she wouldnt let me read more than a page or two before she would grab the pages and or just not be interested anymore.

all the time! She LOVES books, just like me. We have soo many books at home. In fact one of our favorite places to go as a family is the library. We could spend hours there!

We read to our girls every night! My 3 year old is obsessed with books and most nights we read about an hour. I love getting books as a gift and always give books at baby showers.

I can't imagine someone never reading to their child. Whenever anyone asks what to get DD I always mention that she loves books. I can;t remember not reading to her. Children get so much out of reading with their parents. Keep giving books - one of the best gifts in my opinion!

YES!! It's part of her bedtime routine and we read to her every single night since about 2 months I think. Books are the best gifts.

I try... There are a select few books that DS will let me read over and over again. The rest he usually does not give the time of day. Even as an infant he wouldn't sit still long enough to listen to a full book! I still buy books all the time in the hopes that he will one day grow to love reading like I do. In the meantime, I read to him as often as I can. Half the time he runs away from me and moves on to something else but I will still read the book out loud to myself in the hopes that he is at least somewhat listening. hah:

i wish i did more earlier...now DS is 4 and he can't sit for a book. he'd rather build something or make a tent or do a puzzle...something where he's interactive. he doesn't even like tv. my nephew is 3.5 and can read...my sister reads to him all the time.

every. single. night. He would not let a night pass without 2-3 books and I love it.

My 3.5 year old is a true bookwork! He "reads" to himself every single night after we leave the room as well

All the time! I've been reading to her since she was a newborn. She's 18 months old now, and she picks up books, says "booka, booka, booka," brings it to me and plops down on my lap to be read to. I love it! She also loves flipping through the pages on her own.

ETA: Oh, and I love receiving books as gifts.

My DS has been a reader since the beginning. He loves books. I know he can't read them yet but he picks them up and sits and flips the pages and looks at it all.

Even at daycare they said his favorite spot is the book corner. I love this. I think reading is so important and it makes me said to think that people would just toss books aside.

Yes, I've been reading to him since he was 6 months old I believe. He also loves music (takes after his momma) and it's amazing how he sings in key at 2 years old.

I encourage my family get him books for his birthday and holidays. He's getting 5 just from Santa Claus this year, plus what my mom, sister and MIL bought him.

I think it's important to read to them when they are younger, it helps encourage them to use their imagination. I also don't think that they know if they are not into books before they can read for themselves. It's all about how the story is read to them, you add in voices and act out little bits and pieces and they just love it. IMO
