I want to add that paying for a child's college but putting yourself in debt is not something I agree with bc ultimately you may then become a burden on your child financially, so if we can afford to do it yes we will but not at the cost of not having our own retirement and savings.
I completely agree. We will help in any way we can as long as it's not putting ourselves in debt as well.

I think it is reasonable to pay for tuition to a SUNY school. My DH and I both went to Binghamton so we are a little biased.

Do you plan to pay for your child(ren)'s college education
It depends on the school she chooses. I would like to pay in full, but who knows what things will cost then. We will pay what we can.
My parents paid for my college tuition, but said if I wanted to go away I had to pay for the dorm. I went away paid for a dorm for a year, then wound up switching schools and just getting an apartment by my school. It was nice not having a loan payment for tuition, and the year I had to pay for my dorm, I paid that off pretty quickly since I had a job as well.

I don't think most people (especially kids) appreciate things when it's handed to them anyway. When it's your own money on the line, you tend to show up to class and work harder. Generally speaking, of course.
Generally speaking I suppose so but I also think that it is important to make your children know the sacrifice you are making.
My parents were both hardworking people, both grew up poor and neither was handed anything. Through their handwork and success they were in a financial position to pay for our college tuition.
I took college seriously. My father worked his ass off to send me there and I made him proud.
So I think it's also how you raise your kids. I didn't "need" a job as a teen but since I was 14 I had one bc my parents believe in handwork and knowing the value of a dollar even though technically speaking they could have handed me whatever I wanted.
I guess my point is not all kids who grow up privileged don't respect money.

Do you plan to pay for your child(ren)'s college education
I only have one DC now but I was thinking that I'd like to space them out so we aren't paying for 2 college tuition at once. My in laws paid almost my husbands college expenses but his brother who is 2 years younger was encouraged to go to Baruch honors for free. He did, landed a good job, and got his MBA at Cornell 2 years after that. His parents paid for his MBA since they didn't pay a penny for undergrad. That was always their deal.

Re: Do you plan to pay for your child(ren)'s college education
Our hope is to pay for our DDs undergraduate education. Granted, it depends on what college costs in 16 years. We have quite a bit saved so far. Our hope is to do the same for other children should we have more.
As pp have said already there will be expectations attached to this.

Re: Do you plan to pay for your child(ren)'s college education
Depends.
We have scholarship $ through work for every kid. We have a 529 for each kid.
I don't want the kids to choose a school without budget in mind, and without a career in mind (don't go to Harvard to become a teacher).
I can say what I want, but a lot depends on what my kids are like in 10 years.
Both I and my sister had large scholarships, inexpensive schools (by choice) & have graduate education & well paying jobs. We both got some help from our parents, but both worked through college & bought our own cars (and paid for our separate insurance).

No, I can't commit to that kind of cost. I will help if I can. I have savings accounts set up for them so we'll see....

What are the prices of Suny schools? I ask as I havent checked them out but going to college fairs, I thought they were in the $20's also.
Just under 20k if you need room & board. A little over 11k if commuting or living off campus.
I think this is the average. It may depend on the school.
Is this for one semester?

Nope--every spare penny we have is going towards retirement. You can't take out a loan for that!
If we can help, great. If not, we'll help them figure it out when the time comes.

Suny is currently 19,602 per year for tuition and room and board. They also list an additional $3000 ish for books, transportation and personal expenses. If you commute it is about $7500 per year before indirect expenses.

Also, when I was inquiring about life insurance and how much to get I was told that in 18 years state school will be 200,000 and a private university will be 500,000

Agreed. I had to save for anything else I wanted, including my first car (which was a piece of junk, and made me appreciate every car I had after that). Seeing what my friends are going through trying to pay off undergrad AND graduate degrees made me appreciate what they did for me. Although I have student loans from my master's, it could be a lot higher.

Re: Do you plan to pay for your child(ren)'s college education
DH is a professor so DD will have a selection of schools she will be able to attend tuition-free. We are saving as there is room and board and tuition is a taxable benefit so it won't be totally free. I want there to be a balance though, of her kicking in as well as us.

Re: Do you plan to pay for your child(ren)'s college education
Nope. I took out loans, if they want to go to college they can as well. My parents helped by giving me an allowance while I was at school so I could focus on studies (I did work during winter and summer breaks). I would like to do the same for my kids if they choose to go to college.

Do you plan to pay for your child(ren)'s college education
Nope. And it's not necessarily a matter of finances, bc our home will be paid off before she enters college.
There's something to be said for doing things on your own. I paid for my own cars, car insurance, cell phone, college, spending money, everything. I probably won't take it to the extent my parents did, but I don't view things like college to be a parents responsibility.

How can a student pay for his or her own college unless it is a community college? If, say Hofstra is 56,000 per year even if you worked 30 hours at minimum wage you could barely make a dent. Even at a Suny you would only be able to pay for a little bit. Plus, it would likely affect your grades and rule out certain career paths. For instance, if you want to do something highly competitive like a pre-med track working that many hours per week would make elite academic achievement much more difficult. The more loans you have to take the more limited your options are later in regards to buying a house and getting a decent start in life. If the money is there, I don't understand why a parent wouldn't do what they can to help. If you can't afford it that's a different story.

That's it for SUNY??!! That's nothing. I commuted to SUNY Stony Brook, graduated way back in 1997 and honestly, my tuition was only a few grand less than what you're saying it is now. I think that's pretty good considering I graduated almost 20yrs ago. We should be just fine affording our kids college if they stick to a SUNY school. Thank God for the SUNY system.
ETA - I just looked up SUNY SB.........as a commuter, it's only $6470/yr . That awesome for a quality SUNY school. Defintely not what I would consider outrageous for a college education.
