Re: Do you plan to pay for your child(ren)'s college education

I ask as I have been told by my mother that both my dh and I HAVE to get another job and not spend anything when my dd goes to college.
Sorry, but that is NOT happening. I will pay for some but I am NOT paying for it all as I can not afford it.
My dd changes her mind faster than I change my underwear and I could be working 2 jobs for the rest of my life if it was up to her for what she wants to do. Not happening.

Re: Do you plan to pay for your child(ren)'s college education

It is a goal of ours but I cannot predict the future. We are saving for them now and hoping that it is something we will be able to do.

I want to add that neither of us have loans, not having to pay loans takes a huge burden off of us and I feel like in a way it allows me to save more for my kids.

Both of us were fortunate to have parents who paid for our college so ideally we would do the same.

I want to add that paying for a child's college but putting yourself in debt is not something I agree with bc ultimately you may then become a burden on your child financially, so if we can afford to do it yes we will but not at the cost of not having our own retirement and savings.

I answered no only bc I doubt we will have the money to do so. My father and grandfather have set up accounts for DD1 which will be used for college. I'm sure they'll do the same for DD2. If for some reason we are financially able to contribute, we will. My dad took care of my student loans for me and I will be forever grateful. I Don't think I'd have been able to financially survive if I had to pay them.

No, because all DC will receive full scholarships to college Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Seriously... My DH and I are sort of of two minds about this (right now with DC in 4th, 2nd & pre-k): he thinks we should pay 100% and I have my reservations about that because that's not how I was raised. My parents--in the 90s--paid for the base tuition of a CUNY or SUNY school; my sister, who went to Stony Brook, paid her own room and board and I stayed home and went to Queens College, so they paid it all. My DH got full scholarships to college and law school, so it was a non-issue for him.

Morbidly, I suppose they'll be set up when their grandparents pass away, but regardless, I will NOT pay for them to get crap grades. So, for now, I guess I would be willing to pay 100% for 3.5 and up, then it will be negotiable from there (all things being equal...ability, effort, etc)...

Right now, we plan to pay for tuition at a state school. If they choose a more expensive school, they will need to take out loans.

I would like to say yes, but I can't even imagine what college will cost In 10 years. Could be 300k for private school education. I would need to save 50k a year for the next 10 years in order to cover that tuition for 2 children.

Everyone will be going for SUNY since it's affordable, but who knows what the admissions process and requirements would be in 10 years from now.

We will try to do what our parents did for us and pay for undergrad. If DS wants to continue his education further he's on his own.

I think it is reasonable to pay for tuition to a SUNY school. My DH and I both went to Binghamton so we are a little biased.

Yes. I plan to pay for dd's tuition. She will get the same guidelines I was given four years for a bachelors degree and she must maintain a minimum of a 3.0. There are not a lot of options for undergraduate student loans. Especially with the projected tuitions in 17 or so years-I am not opposed to her taking student loans if she has to but the plan is to pay for her education.

Nothing wrong with SUNY. DH and I both had loans that were paid off by the time we were 25 and our parents paid for half of college or more. We hope to be able to at least do the same for them or better.

Yes, that's the plan. I know what it's like to be in debt, I don't want them starting off in life with that burden. If things go according to plan, we should be able to take care of our kids educations. That being said, should they want to attend an expensive, private university then we will NOT fully fund that, we're all about the SUNY system.

We were told to expect it to be around 400k. Chat Icon

We intend to pay for our children's college educations, as did our parents for ours.

Just under 20k if you need room & board. A little over 11k if commuting or living off campus.

I think this is the average. It may depend on the school.

I would like to pay for all, or at least the majority of their education if possible. They both have college funds set up and I just hope it will be enough.

Re: Do you plan to pay for your child(ren)'s college education

My DD is starting college this fall and she got some scholarships and grants but DH and I are responsible for the rest which is going to run is about 18k per year.

DD plans to go to graduate school so she can take out loans to cover that I refuse to take loans to cover her bachelor program.

Yes, all of it. My parents paid for mine...all of it and cost of living. They didn't want me starting out when a graduated in debt. Luckily they, and we, are in a position to do it.

Although I did get some scholarship money...and hope dc do too. We started saving for college the day dd was born and will again for this one.

My sister went there. It's a great school. Especially for accounting which is what she went for.

This exactly. Ds is 6 months, he already has 2 529's, one from us and one from my grandfather. Both since we got his SSN around 1 month old. We will do the same for any other DC that come along.

No.

He can go to a cheaper school like a community school and work his way through like I did.

He can pay part and take part in a small loan like his Godmother.

He can join the service and earn one while defending America like his great grandfathers and his maternal grandfather did.

We plan to contribute whatever we can to our DD's college. Based on her college choice, she will pay the difference. That is what my parents did for me and what DH's parents did for him. I worked throughout college, paid for my own books, activities, etc. I paid off my loans a couple years after graduating. I believe it teaches kids responsibility and how to manage their money.

I really hope to pay for all of it. My parents were very generous and paid for all of mine, even if it wasn't easy. My school wasn't cheap either. I hope to give my kids the same start.

I would not, however, pay top prices for a school that it's exceptional. It really amazes what many mediocre schools charge for tuition.

Nope

I have savings for each but it won't cover college expenses in total by the time they need it.

Also, I'm not taking on that debt. They can get scholarships/work.
I will help where I can but no - I have no plans to take on debt at that time.

And that's what financial experts advise anyway.

I don't think most people (especially kids) appreciate things when it's handed to them anyway. When it's your own money on the line, you tend to show up to class and work harder. Generally speaking, of course.
